A bipartisan majority of NYC Council members is demanding Mayor Zohran Mamdani seize privately owned property in order to save a piece of Manhattan history tied to the Underground Railroad, The Post has learned.Councilman Harvey Epstein (D-Manhattan) fired off a letter Tuesday to Mamdani signed by 31 other members urging the mayor to work with the Council to use the city’s eminent domain powers to block a proposal to build a 100-foot-high commercial building next door to the Merchant’s House Museum in NoHo, where a secret passageway used to smuggle slaves to freedom was discovered in February.Experts say construction of the planned building will cause irreparable damage to the adjacent city-owned, three-and-a-half-story site—which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the earliest known location of Underground Railroad activity in NYC.NYC Councilman Harvey Epstein and 31 other Council members are urging Mayor Mamdani to use the city’s eminent domain powers to block a proposal to build a commercial tower next door to the Merchant’s House Museum in NoHo. He made one tall order — and it got him thrown out.A Knicks fan is crying foul after he booked a penthouse at the Ritz-Carlton for Game 4 of the NBA Finals — but was allegedly kicked out of the $20,000 hotel room because of a demand from San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama.Pennsylvanian Phil Godlewski was with a party of six, who spent a total of $750,000 on tickets to Wednesday’s game — and rented out one of the two penthouse suites on the 41st floor of the Ritz-Carlton on West 28th Street in NoMad.The Scranton entrepreneur — who was with his 11 and 9-year-old sons and his friend Ron Pavalonis, and his son — wasn’t told that Wemby was staying in the other penthouse suite.When Pavalonis was entering his room around 5 p.m., he said he saw Wemby exiting his own suite — presumably on his way to Madison Square Garden, and greeted the Spurs star player.“I hear Ronnie say five words. That’s all he said. ‘Good luck tonight, big guy,'” Godlewski, 43, told The Post.Just 10 minutes later, they got a knock on the door from the hotel’s director of rooms operations, Jean Choi — which they did not hear since their room was so big. So Choi — along with three men in black suits — just let themselves in, Godlewski claimed.“They opened the door illegally, and they actually entered the vestibule area. And she’s yelling from within the room, ‘Mr. Godlewski!’ I finally hear her and walk to the door and that’s when she told me, ‘I’m sorry, but you guys are going to have to leave the premises.'”“I said, ‘What? She didn’t care what actually happened. She didn’t care how it happened. If you don’t want anyone around the Spurs, especially Victor, don’t book the penthouse directly next to him. Thanks.” Gabe Einhorn told The Post he felt obligated to share the message to raise awareness of growing antisemitism. In the U.S., birthright citizenship, which gives U.S. citizenship to all children born in the country, became part of the nation’s Constitution in 1868. Section 1 of the 14th Amendment states: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."The 14th Amendment does not require a child's parents to be U.S. citizens.Trump's Case Against Birthright Citizenship Trump targeted birthright citizenship on the very first day of his second term, issuing an executive order banning it moving forward, and arguing that the related section of the Constitution was outdated. Citizenship would only be granted to a newborn child if at least one parent is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, under Trump's order.Trump's order was met with multiple lawsuits, and courts have prevented it from taking effect so far.In April, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case that centers around Trump's January 2025 executive order about birthright citizenship. During the arguments, several justices on both sides of the political aisle expressed skepticism about the administration’s attempt to narrow birthright citizenship.Chief Justice John Roberts questioned whether the government’s reliance on narrow historical exceptions could realistically be expanded to cover broad categories of immigrants, describing some examples as “very quirky," according to an Axios report.He also dismissed Solicitor General D. John Sauer's concerns about it being a "new world" where global travel had made it easier for people to come to the U.S. to have children, per a Time report. Roberts responded that it's "the same Constitution."Other justices including Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, questioned the historical and legal basis for narrowing birthright citizenship, pointing to gaps in the government’s reasoning....Meanwhile, the court’s upcoming ruling could redefine a core constitutional principle tied to immigration and citizenship.
