Heartbreaking Discovery: Missing 5-Year-Old Found Dead in South Carolina New

Heartbreaking Discovery: Missing 5-Year-Old Found Dead in South Carolina

A missing 5-year-old girl was found dead after authorities said she “wandered away” from a home her family had been renting in a South Carolina beach town. The child, Saylor Hayes, was last seen in the area of Hagley Estates in Pawleys Island on Sunday, August 30, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office. Her body was located in water “near the area where she was last seen” around 9:45 a.m. on Monday, August 31, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. Several law enforcement agencies as well as local residents were involved in the search for Saylor. “Hundreds of residents from the area searched their own properties and surrounding areas and guarded local docks,” the sheriff’s office said. “The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office thanks everyone who assisted in the search and sends its deepest condolences to the young girl’s family.” Saylor had been wearing a light blue one-piece bathing suit and also had a white lanyard around her ankle when she went missing, the sheriff’s office said. She was described as 3-foot-6 with blonde hair and blue eyes. During the search, the sheriff’s office explained that Saylor was nonverbal and advised anyone who might’ve encountered her to speak “gently and slowly” to her, as she’d “react positively to a gentle tone, smiles, and slow movements.” Authorities were trying to track her through a transponder she had been wearing, according to the agencies. In an update shared within hours of her disappearance, the sheriff’s office said deputies were trying to trace her location using Project Lifesaver as other law enforcement officials searched the local area from above using drones and a helicopter. Authorities were also searching the water on Sunday. Divers from Horry County had “examined 200 yards underwater near the rental property that the family is staying in,” the sheriff’s office said in another update on Sunday. “We’re here until we find her,” Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver said in a statement prior to the discovery of Saylor’s body. Search efforts continued Monday morning. Authorities had used Project Lifesaver equipment during the search, according to authorities. Project Lifesaver is an international search and rescue program geared toward helping law enforcement find individuals considered to be at-risk, including individuals with autism, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Pawleys Island, where Saylor had been staying with her family, is a barrier island located along the coast, about a 25-mile drive south from Myrtle Beach.

Did the Bajau Tribe Evolve a 'Biological Scuba Tank' for Diving? New

Did the Bajau Tribe Evolve a 'Biological Scuba Tank' for Diving?

In the coastal waters of Southeast Asia lives a remarkable group of people who have adapted in an extraordinary way to life at sea.Known as the Bajau, or “Sea Nomads,” this tribe has spent nearly a millennium living in close connection with the ocean, so much so that they often reside in stilted houses over the water, spending the majority of their days diving, fishing, and foraging beneath the surface, captured by photographers across the globe like Rehahn Photographer.Credit: Senant Yann / Getty Images. For generations, the Bajau have relied on traditional free-diving techniques to gather food, spearfishing and collecting shellfish with impressive skill. Now, science has uncovered a fascinating biological adaptation that may explain how they manage such a demanding aquatic lifestyle.Researchers studying the Bajau discovered that they possess significantly larger spleens than neighboring populations. While the spleen is not commonly associated with diving ability, it plays a key role in oxygen storage, per the National Geographic. When the body is submerged in water and oxygen is scarce, the spleen contracts and releases oxygen-rich red blood cells into circulation, a natural boost that can extend breath-holding capacity.“It’s like a biological scuba tank,” explained Melissa Ilardo, lead author of the study from the University of Copenhagen, in an interview with BBC’s Inside Science. The Bajau’s spleens were found to be 50% larger on average than those of nearby villagers who do not dive regularly.Ilardo described the tribe’s daily routine: diving for up to eight hours a day, often to depths of over 70 meters, using traditional wooden goggles and weighted belts. At any given moment, they spend around 60% of their time underwater, with dives lasting anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes. This extreme lifestyle triggers the human dive response, a set of physiological reactions that slow the heart rate, restrict blood flow to the limbs, and squeeze the spleen to release oxygen.Over generations, the Bajau appear to have evolved to enhance this response. The study didn’t just stop at physiology, it uncovered a genetic basis for this adaptation. Researchers found that the PDE10A gene, which regulates thyroid hormones in mice and influences spleen size, was far more common in the Bajau population.“We asked whether any genetic variants are more frequent in the Bajau compared to others,” said co-author Prof. Rasmus Nielsen from UC Berkeley, via BBC News. “PDE10A stood out.”This discovery echoes findings from other high-adaptation communities, such as Tibetans living at high altitudes, who carry genetic traits believed to be inherited from Neanderthals, leading scientists to wonder if similar ancient interbreeding could have influenced the Bajau’s evolution.Despite their extraordinary adaptation, the Bajau way of life is increasingly at risk. Santarawi Lalisan, a tribal elder, shared concerns about how pollution, especially plastic, is a growing threat, according to Science Times. As pollution, modernization, and climate change threaten their environment, the future of the Bajau’s ocean-based culture remains uncertain.Still, their story is a striking example of how humans can biologically adapt to even the most extreme conditions.Featured image credit: BBC/YouTube (Screenshot)

Özgür Özel'in CHP'ye Dönüş Sorularına Net Yanıtı

Özgür Özel ve 91 milletvekili ile beraber kurulan YENİ Parti'nin Genel Merkez binası Ankara'nın Çankaya ilçesinde açıldı. Bunun ardından Özel, YENİ Parti Genel Merkezi'ndeki ilk canlı yayın için ekranların karşısına geçti.Halk TV'de soruları yanıtlayan Özgür Özel, Ankara Bölge Adliye Mahkemesinin CHP'ye yönelik "mutlak butlan" kararına yapılan itiraza ilişkin Yargıtay kararının eylül ayında açıklanmasına ilişkin gelen "CHP'ye dönecek misiniz?" sorusuna net yanıt verdi.Özel şu ifadeleri kullandı:"Yargıtay kararından umutluyum. İstinaf Mahkemesinin tedbir kararı olacak iş değil. Bir yandan boşanma davasını göreceksin, bir yandan çiftlerden birine evlenme izni vereceksin. Tedbir kararı kalkıp, butlanla gelen yöneticiler gidince CHP'de birilerinin kongre kararı alması lazım. Seçilmiş birileri tarafından yönetimin devralınması lazım. Bu darbe ürününe CHP teslim edilemez. Bizim aklımız geride kalmadı. Ben dönmem o partiye. Yeni Parti yeni yoluyla devam edecek"Özel'in aktardıklarından öne çıkanlar şu şekilde:"BİR DİP DALGA OLDUĞU KESİN"Özel, "CHP'ye seçimle bir yönetim gelse ortaklık, ittifak kurar mısınız" sorusu üzerine, "Her şey olur. CHP'nin seçimle gelen bir yönetimi olur. Usulüne uygun seçimle gelen herkes baştacı" ifadesini kullandı. Özel, Muharrem İnce'nin açıklamasının sorulması üzerine, şunları kaydetti:"İlk duydum, alındım. Parti kurmamızın eleştirilmesi çok normal. Muharrem Bey'in kendi açıklaması var: 'Memleketi kapatmayalım, butlan gelirse oraya geçeriz' demişti bana. First Movie Role 6 Years After Her Passing New

Naya Rivera's Son Josey Lands First Movie Role 6 Years After Her Passing

Naya Rivera’s son, Josey, is set to make his acting debut six years after his mom’s tragic death. Josey, 10, booked his first onscreen role in the upcoming feature film The Burning Valley, written and directed by Evan Coury, according to Josey’s IMDb page. His character is listed as “Boy.” Josey’s father, Ryan Dorsey, is also slated to appear in the film as “Sam Pope.” “Ryan says he is a very proud dad,” a rep for Dorsey, 43, told People on Sunday, August 30. “Josey has been working very hard and has shown incredible growth as an actor.” Though a synopsis for the movie is not yet available, Coury told Pennsylvania newspaper The Tribune-Review that it follows “a steelworker who loses his job when the mill announces a shutdown.” He continued, “It sets him on a journey as he wanders through his Rust Belt town.” Coury, a Pennsylvania native, added that he hopes “to encapsulate the history of our region through one guy’s personal experience.” Coury previously acted in the 2015 short film Adopted and the 2022 film Dear Zoe, starring Sadie Sink. The Burning Valley began filming in Pennsylvania earlier this month. The cast also includes Tyler Miles, JB Brown, Joseph Ducar, Whip Hubley, Patrick Jordan, Sam Lothard, Joseph Mazza and Sheila McKenna. Josey previously made his stage debut at age 8 in a production of Seussical Jr. in West Virginia. He is also reportedly set to star in the upcoming film Fairy Boy, directed by Julia Fox. Meanwhile, Dorsey’s past credits include Yellowstone, Ray Donovan, Justified and Palm Royale. Josey’s casting news comes six years after Rivera died at age 33 in July 2020. The Glee alum had rented a boat for a day of swimming at Lake Piru in California when the vessel began to drift away. Rivera died in an accidental drowning after she used her last bit of energy to lift Josey, who was 4 years old at the time, back into the boat. “I remember laying there with [Josey] in a state of shock,” Dorsey, who was married to Rivera from 2014 to 2018, recalled to Us in July 2025. “Looking at this beautiful boy and grateful that he’s OK. When he woke up, he said, ‘Dad, what are you doing here?’ I said, ‘I came to be with you.’ He told me, ‘They can’t find Mommy. I hope they find her, but I think she might be dead.’ I was devastated for him, for me, for everyone.” After the tragedy, Dorsey and Josey moved from Los Angeles to the actor's hometown of Charleston, West Virginia, where he began to rebuild their lives. “I see how creative [Josey] is,” Dorsey told Us. “He’s been playing piano for a year and he is getting better at that. It’s been awesome to watch him go from poking around on one finger to playing with two hands. He’s starting to really hit the notes when he’s singing. He said to me the other day, ‘Dad, I think I might want to be a musician. My mom is a singer, so why not me?’ I just thought that was a beautiful thing.” He concluded of his son and Rivera, “Josey is going to be her legacy. I don’t know what he’s going to do, but I think he’s going to do great things.”

Trump's Bold Move: Lake Ontario's Surprising New Name Sparks Debate New

Trump's Bold Move: Lake Ontario's Surprising New Name Sparks Debate

President Donald Trump called Apple about changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in the hopes of getting them to alter their maps, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Monday.Trump announced Lake Ontario would now be called Lake America on Thursday, as part of his trade feud with Canada. Google Maps has already updated its system to reflect the change, but Apple users using the company's own map will still see Lake Ontario when they open the page. They also can't search for Lake America to get directions. However, that may be changing.During an interview with Fox Business' Mornings With Maria, Burgum told guest host Cheryl Casone, who was filling in for host Maria Bartiromo, that Trump reached out to Apple directly."I know that the president reached out to Apple directly, so I'm sure that we may be seeing that change coming up soon to Lake America," Burgum said.Burgum added that Trump signing the executive order for the name change, it requires the Department of Interior's Board of Geographic Names to change the name on their software, which "cascades down to all the map providers." Newsweek reached out to Apple for comment via email but did not receive a response in time for publication.Which Maps Are Changing Lake Ontario to Lake AmericaGoogle announced that U.S. users of Google Maps would see “Lake America,” while Canadian users would continue to see “Lake Ontario” and users elsewhere would see both names."These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now," Google said in a blog post on Saturday. In a social media post, MapQuest said it won't be changing the name of Lake Ontario. MapQuest has since surged to the number one downloaded Navigation application. The company also refused to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in early 2025, but gave users the opportunity to name their own gulf. A similar tool was created for people to be able to name their own lake. Waze still has Lake Ontario labeled Lake Ontario on its map. Newsweek has reached out to Waze for comment via email but did not receive a response in time for publication....Trade Tensions and the Executive OrderTrump's decision to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” is the latest flashpoint in his administration’s escalating dispute with Canada and follows a pattern of symbolic geographic rebranding efforts that he has championed since returning to office. On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of the Interior to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” in U.S. federal records and mapping systems, declaring the move effective immediately. The order instructed federal agencies and the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the government’s official geographic database, to adopt the new name for federal use.The White House framed the change as a recognition of the lake’s importance to U.S. history, commerce, defense and exploration. According to the executive order, the administration argued that the United States possesses much of the lake’s volume and that the waterway has long served as a significant American asset. Trump said he had completed all of the necessary paperwork and notifications required for the change. The move came amid rapidly worsening relations between Washington and Ottawa. In the days leading up to the order, trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada had collapsed, triggering a new round of tariffs and counter-tariffs. The Trump administration imposed 50 percent tariffs on billions of dollars in Canadian goods, while Canada announced retaliatory duties on a wide range of American products. Trump repeatedly linked the name change to his broader criticism of Canada’s trade policies, accusing the country of unfairly benefiting from its economic and security relationship with the U.S.Regional Pushback and Indigenous HeritageLake Ontario is one of North America’s five Great Lakes and sits along the border between New York and the Canadian province of Ontario. The lake has carried the name “Ontario” for centuries. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that the name derives from the Wendat word “Ontari’io,” meaning “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big,” and predates both the U.S. and the modern Canadian state. He argued that the historic name reflects Indigenous heritage and should remain unchanged.Canadian officials quickly rejected the executive order. Carney stated that Canada would continue referring to the body of water as Lake Ontario. Ontario Premier Doug Ford similarly dismissed the effort and unveiled signage declaring “Lake Ontario—Now and Always.” The Seneca Nation, whose ancestral territory is connected to the region, also criticized the renaming and urged the administration to reverse the decision, arguing that the traditional name honors Indigenous peoples who lived around the lake long before the creation of either country.New York Governor Kathy Hochul, whose state is the only U.S. state bordering Lake Ontario, said New York would not adopt the new name. The renaming echoes Trump’s earlier executive action changing “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” for U.S. federal use. As with that move, the Lake Ontario order does not compel foreign governments, international bodies or private mapmakers to adopt the new terminology. However, some companies have updated their products to reflect the federal designation. Contact Newsweek editors for this story: John Fitzpatrick and Anthony Murray.

Other exemptions include baby formula, sports drinks, carbonated water and medically necessary beverages.Items that used to be SNAP-eligible may no longer ring up at checkout, and/or customers could see “item not allowed” messages when trying to buy groceries online or with an EBT card.Items that used to be SNAP-eligible may no longer ring up at checkout, and/or customers could see “item not allowed” messages when trying to buy groceries online or with an EBT card. For in-store purchases, experts recommend opting for regular checkout over self-checkout, as cashiers may be able to provide clarity and assistance. For shoppers confused about what items are and are not included in the ban, consider using full-service checkout aisles, or online shopping, to check individual eligibility. The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service approved the program after a waiver request was made by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.“Thank you to President Trump and Secretary Rollins for approving our light-touch, common-sense approach to strengthen the SNAP program by promoting healthier outcomes for South Carolinians,” Governor Henry McMaster said in a news release. The new policy will restrict the purchase of candy, energy drinks, soft drinks, and sweetened beverages across the state, including at grocery stores, convenience stores, farmers’ markets, and online retailers. Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty Images“Punishing SNAP recipients means we all get to pay more at the grocery store,” said Gina Plata-Nino, SNAP director for the anti-hunger advocacy group Food Research & Action Center.Waiver advocates, including Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., claimed these measures would ensure SNAP funds were not used to buy health-compromising, highly processed foods.“We cannot continue a system that forces taxpayers to fund programs that make people sick and then pay a second time to treat the illnesses those very programs help create,” Kennedy said in a statement in December. In June, the US District Court for the District of Columbia ordered that FNA’s approval of the waiver be vacated and that the waiver’s implementation may not proceed in Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Tennessee, and West Virginia.Meanwhile, other states are moving forward with their waivers.Earlier this year, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah began enacting similar restrictions on the purchase of soda, sugary drinks, candy, and other “unhealthy” optionsMeanwhile, Hawaii, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Nevada, Ohio, Virginia, and Wyoming have plans to begin restrictions as soon as next month.
