University of Iowa Mourns Tragic Loss of Beloved Band Member

A member of the University of Iowa marching band has died after suffering heat stroke during the Hawkeyes’ season-opening win over Northern Illinois University last weekend. Derek Phillips, a junior from Dubuque, Iowa, collapsed during the game on Saturday, September 5, shortly before the band was set to perform its halftime show. Temperatures in Iowa City reached 94 degrees that day as the university adjusted several athletics start times to account for the heat. Phillips was taken to University of Iowa hospital, where his family made the decision to take him off life support on Tuesday, September 8. “Derek brought so much light, humor and kindness into this world,” his family said in a statement announcing his death. “He was a phenomenal musician — whether he was playing jazz ,singing his heart out, or marching under the lights, music was the language of his soul. He just had the absolute summer of his life touring in drum and bugle corps. We are so grateful for that experience.” Iowa marching band director Eric Bush and School of Music director Tammie Walker released a joint statement on Tuesday, sharing their condolences, thanking medical personnel and offering counseling to students. “Derek Phillips was our mellophone section leader, a beloved member of the School of Music horn studio, and the kind of friend, student, and musician that represents the very best of what it means to be a Hawkeye,” the statement read. The statement continued, “Losing a HMB family member is one of the most difficult tragedies we will experience. We are grateful to his parents, Sara and Brian, for providing regular updates throughout the weekend to HMB staff and the students who love him. We will continue to walk the journey together, and we will continue to provide support and resources to our students to ensure they are getting the care they need. The Hawkeye Marching Band and the School of Music are strong and resilient because of the people within.” Bush and Walker also emphasized in their statement that “there is nothing more important than the safety of our students.” “Their well-being is always at the top of my mind,” they said. “We are teaching them more than music and marching — and we are a family. I told the band on Saturday, when we gathered after we departed from Kinnick Stadium, ‘As a parent, the care I have for my own son extends to every single marching Hawkeye.’” The band announced during the game that it would skip its halftime performance, but did not mention a medical emergency. "The health and safety of our students, staff, and fans are our top priority,” the band posted via X. “Due to the heat, HMB will forgo our halftime performance today."

Jerry Sandusky's Shocking Claims Resurface Amid Frail Court Appearance

Convicted sex offender and former Penn State football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky made his first public appearance in more than seven years as he seeks a new trial. “He’s got heart issues. He’s delayed a heart surgery. He’s 82 years of age, you saw him if you were in the courtroom,” Sandusky’s attorney, Jerry Russo, told reporters outside a Pennsylvania courthouse after the former coach’s hearing on Tuesday, September 8. “He’s feeble and frail.” Sandusky appeared via Zoom for the evidentiary hearing concerning the testimony of one of his accusers in the 2012 trial that resulted in him being convicted of 45 counts of sexual abuse. The accuser, referred to as Victim 10, now claims prosecutors tried to steer his testimony at the time, according to a sworn affidavit obtained by ABC News in August. Sandusky was an assistant coach for the Nittany Lions under head coach Joe Paterno from 1969 to 1999, and he continued to host his summer camps and was around the program well after his retirement. He was ultimately sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison after being accused of sexually abusing 10 boys from 1994 to 2009, though more than 30 alleged victims have come forward. Asked about Sandusky’s demeanor during his hearing, Russo told reporters he was, “Prayerful.” Sandusky wore a brown button-down shirt and often slouched during the hearing, according to The Athletic. He sounded “shaky and diffident” and appeared “visibly gaunt” with less hair than he had in his last public appearance, which came in 2019. Victim 10 swore in the affidavit that he did not have a clear memory of being molested but that prosecutors "repeatedly encouraged me to believe that Mr. Sandusky had molested me — despite my lack of clear or certain memory of any such conduct." Sandusky, who has been serving his sentence at Laurel Highlands State Correctional Institute in Somerset, Pennsylvania, has maintained his innocence. "If you believe Jerry Sandusky was fairly treated by the court, then you're not going to hear what I have to say,” Russo? said. Russo also told ESPN, "Read the record and you will understand why I believe he's innocent. That's why I took this case." Sandusky did not speak publicly about the case on Tuesday, but told the Daily Mail in 2024 that he has “never ever in my life ever thought about molesting anybody.” “I was accused of heinous crimes, which I’ve never committed,” he said. “My wife was my only partner in sex, and that was after marriage.” Sandusky also said he believes he was “wrongfully convicted by inconsistent, perjured testimony,” and that his alleged victims were “incentivized by money” and “coached and led” to lie.

Huguette Clark kishte lindur në një familje jashtëzakonisht të pasur dhe zotëronte prona luksoze në disa prej zonave më të njohura të Shteteve të Bashkuara. Megjithatë, pavarësisht kësaj pasurie të jashtëzakonshme, Clark kishte zgjedhur të jetonte në një mënyrë shumë të izoluar. Ajo qëndronte kryesisht në një dhomë spitali në Nju Jork, larg jetës së zakonshme shoqërore dhe larg luksit të pronave që kishte në dispozicion.Për 20 vite, Hadassah Peri u bë një nga njerëzit më të afërt me Clark. Puna e saj nuk ishte aspak e lehtë, pasi ajo punonte me turne prej 12 orësh dhe, sipas rrëfimeve të bëra më vonë, ishte në shërbim të saj pesë ose gjashtë ditë në javë. Me kalimin e kohës, marrëdhënia profesionale mes infermieres dhe pacientes duket se u shndërrua në një lidhje shumë më të afërt personale. Në një jetë ku Clark kishte zgjedhur të qëndronte pothuajse e izoluar, prania e vazhdueshme e Perit u bë një pjesë e rëndësishme e përditshmërisë së saj.Ndërsa vitet kalonin, Clark filloi t’i bënte infermieres dhurata me vlerë shumë të madhe. Sipas të dhënave të bëra publike pas vdekjes së saj, Peri mori prej saj shtëpi, makina dhe mbështetje financiare për shkollimin e tre fëmijëve të saj. Kur u llogaritën dhuratat që ajo kishte marrë gjatë kohës që Clark ishte gjallë, vlera e tyre arrinte në rreth 31 milionë dollarë. Për një infermiere që kishte ardhur në Shtetet e Bashkuara dhe kishte nisur të kujdesej për një paciente, përmasat e këtyre dhuratave ishin jashtëzakonisht të mëdha.Vetë Peri do ta përshkruante më vonë marrëdhënien e saj me Clark me një fjali që tregon sa e rëndësishme ishte bërë kjo lidhje për të. “Ia jap jetën time Madame-s”, është shprehur ajo, duke iu referuar pacientes që e kishte shoqëruar për dy dekada. Për Perin, marrëdhënia nuk ishte thjesht një punë dhe një mënyrë për të siguruar të ardhura, por një pjesë e madhe e jetës së saj. Megjithatë, përmasat e dhuratave dhe pasurisë së përfshirë do të bëheshin më vonë objekt i një beteje të madhe ligjore.Huguette Clark vazhdoi të jetonte e izoluar për vite me radhë, pavarësisht se pasuria e saj përfshinte prona luksoze dhe pasuri të konsiderueshme. Vdekja e saj shënoi fundin e një jete të gjatë, por njëkohësisht hapi një kapitull të ri dhe shumë më të ndërlikuar rreth pasurisë së saj. Deri në atë moment, shumica e vëmendjes kishte qenë te jeta e pazakontë e trashëgimtares dhe marrëdhënia e saj me njerëzit që e rrethonin. Por kur u bë e ditur përmbajtja e testamentit, historia mori një kthesë të papritur.Në testament, Clark i kishte lënë Hadassah Perit edhe rreth 30 milionë dollarë të tjera. Kjo shumë vinte përtej dhuratave që infermierja kishte marrë gjatë viteve të jetës së Clark. Nëse do të përfshihej edhe vlera e dhuratave të mëparshme, bëhej fjalë për një shumë prej dhjetëra milionë dollarësh që kishte kaluar nga pasuria e një prej grave më të pasura të Amerikës te një person që kishte qenë kujdestare e saj për 20 vite.Por pas vdekjes së Clark, disa të afërm ngritën pikëpyetje mbi mënyrën se si ishte krijuar kjo situatë. Ata pretenduan se e moshuara mund të ishte ndikuar nga njerëzit që kishte pranë dhe se duhej shqyrtuar nëse dhuratat dhe përfitimet e mëdha financiare ishin bërë në rrethana tërësisht të pavarura. Këto pretendime e kthyen marrëdhënien mes dy grave në qendër të një beteje ligjore dhe mediatike. Nga ana tjetër, Peri i mohoi akuzat se kishte përfituar në mënyrë të padrejtë nga Clark.Debati u përqendrua pikërisht te pyetja nëse dhuratat dhe trashëgimia ishin rezultat i një marrëdhënieje të sinqertë mes dy grave apo nëse kishte rrethana të tjera që duhej të merreshin parasysh. Fakti që Clark ishte një grua shumë e moshuar, e izoluar dhe me një pasuri të jashtëzakonshme bëri që çështja të shihej me vëmendje të madhe. Nga ana tjetër, Peri kishte qenë personi që i kishte qëndruar pranë për vite me radhë dhe që kishte punuar për të me orare të gjata, duke krijuar një lidhje të fortë gjatë dy dekadave.Çështja përfundoi në vitin 2013 me një marrëveshje. Si pjesë e saj, Hadassah Peri hoqi dorë nga 30 milionë dollarët që i ishin lënë në testament dhe pranoi të kthente edhe 5 milionë dollarë nga dhuratat që kishte marrë më herët. Marrëveshja i dha fund betejës së gjatë rreth trashëgimisë dhe përfitimeve financiare, duke shmangur një përballje edhe më të gjatë ligjore. Pavarësisht shumave të mëdha të përfshira, marrëdhënia mes Perit dhe Clark vazhdoi të mbetet një prej elementeve më të diskutuara të historisë.Pasuria e përgjithshme e Huguette Clark në kohën e vdekjes së saj vlerësohej rreth 300 milionë dollarë, një shumë që e vendoste atë mes trashëgimtareve më të pasura të Shteteve të Bashkuara. Por historia e saj nuk u bë e famshme vetëm për shkak të milionave. Jeta e izoluar, lidhja e pazakontë me infermieren dhe mënyra se si pasuria e saj u shpërnda pas vdekjes krijuan një histori që vazhdon të ngjallë kuriozitet.Në fund, historia e Huguette Clark dhe Hadassah Perit mbetet e hapur ndaj interpretimeve. Për disa, ajo mund të shihet si historia e një gruaje jashtëzakonisht të pasur dhe të vetmuar, e cila krijoi një lidhje të fortë me personin që i qëndroi pranë për 20 vite dhe vendosi ta shpërblente atë në mënyrë të jashtëzakonshme. Për të tjerë, madhësia e dhuratave dhe rrethanat e jetës së Clark justifikojnë pyetjet që u ngritën pas vdekjes së saj. Marrëveshja ligjore e vitit 2013 e mbylli çështjen, por nuk e zhduku pyetjen që e ka shoqëruar këtë histori: ishin miliona dollarët thjesht shprehje mirënjohjeje ndaj një personi që i qëndroi pranë për dy dekada, apo marrëdhënia mes tyre kishte edhe një dimension tjetër? La industria del entretenimiento se vistió de luto por el repentino fallecimiento de un querido cantante mexicano, quien lamentablemente perdió la vida mientras participaba en un concierto. Los hechos ocurrieron en el Centro de las Artes de Querétaro. El pasado fin de semana se confirmó la muerte del tenor, Joaquín Ledesma Marquina. El cantante participaba en un concierto del Centro de las Artes de Querétaro cuando presentó un problema de salud y posteriormente falleció. Muere cantante mexicano durante un concierto La noche del sábado 5 de septiembre se celebró un concierto en el Centro de las Artes de Querétaro, ubicado en la Plaza Mariano de las Casas en el Centro Histórico de la entidad. Durante la presentación, el tenor, Joaquín Ledesma Marquina, perdió la vida. De acuerdo con medios locales y testigos, el cantante estaba arriba del escenario cuando se sintió mal de salud y posteriormente se desvaneció. Ante esta situación, sus compañeros y los organizadores del evento intentaron auxiliarlo. Minutos después llegaron los servicios de emergencia y confirmaron el fallecimiento. Familiares del tenor, Joaquín Ledesma Marquina, revelaron que el cantante contaba con antecedentes de cardiopatía y había sufrido cuatro infartos. La muerte fue confirmada por la Secretaría de Cultura del estado de Querétaro.  "La Secretaría de Cultura se une a la pena que embarga a la familia, amigos y amigos del maestro Joaquín Ledesma Marquina por su sensible fallecimiento", escribió.  Ante el repentino fallecimiento, el evento que se celebraba en el Centro de las Artes de Querétaro fue suspendido. My mammogram was all clear too! Woo!” Philipps revealed in August that she had been diagnosed with a grade 2 oligodendroglioma, a rare slow-growing tumor. During an interview with People, the Dawson’s Creek alum shared that she was recovering at the time. “I’m grateful that I’m alive,” she told the magazine, which reported that she showed no obvious symptoms ahead of her diagnosis. It was only during a Prenuvo full-body scan in February that she made the discovery, which left her “hyperventilating” while “trying to breathe.” The scan was conducted one day after her former costar James Van Der Beek died, with Philipps telling the outlet that she had asked her ex-husband, Marc Silverstein, at the time whether she should cancel the scan after learning of the devastating news. She ultimately went ahead with it in Van Der Beek's honor. (The actor died from complications of stage III colorectal cancer. He was 48.) James' widow, Kimberly Van Der Beek, shared a message of support for Philipps after she went public with her brain tumor diagnosis. “We love you @busyphilipps and you got angels in heaven,” Kimberly, 44, wrote via Instagram in response to Philipps’ interview. Nicușor Dan surprinde cu o lege care scapă aleșii locali de incompatibilitate

Președintele Nicușor Dan a promulgat, miercuri, legea prin care sunt abrogate prevederile din Codul administrativ care puteau duce la incompatibilitatea consilierilor locali și județeni care ocupă și anumite funcții în administrația publică. Modificarea vine după ce Parlamentul a intervenit rapid asupra legislației, înainte ca noile prevederi să producă efecte asupra unui număr mare de aleși locali.Pe 26 august a.c., propunerea legislativă inițiată de PSD a fost adoptată de Camera Deputaților, în calitate de prim for sesizat și adoptată decizional de Senat a fost adoptată decizional de Senat în aceeși zi. Modificările au fost promovate după intrarea în vigoare, la 9 august, a Legii nr. 165/2026, care stabilea că angajații unor instituții și autorități publice nu pot cumula funcția cu mandatul de consilier local sau județean.Potrivit raportului aprobat în comisia de specialitate a Senatului, proiectul de lege abrogă alineatele (2)-(6) ale articolului 550 din OUG nr. 57/2019 privind Codul administrativ.Aceste prevederi stabileau situațiile în care personalul contractual se putea afla în conflict de interese sau incompatibilitate, precum și modalitatea de soluționare și sancționare a acestora ca abateri disciplinare.Raportul precizează că respectivele dispoziții „aveau în vedere, în esență, asimilarea cu funcționarii publici cu privire la interdicțiile respective, reglementate ca și situații de conflict de interese, respectiv de incompatibilitate”.Abrogarea prevederilor a fost justificată prin necesitatea asigurării predictibilității cadrului legislativ și a prevenirii unor probleme în funcționarea instituțiilor și autorităților publice.„Abrogarea alineatelor (2) - (6) ale articolului 550 din Codul administrativ a fost motivată la Camera Deputaților, prin amendamentele admise, ca fiind necesară pentru asigurarea predictibilității cadrului legislativ și pentru prevenirea unor disfuncționalități în activitatea instituțiilor și autorităților publice”, spune raportul Senatului.Citește și: Opt consilieri din Arad au demisionat din cauza riscului de incompatibilitate. „Nu putem schimba regulile în timpul mandatului”Ce schimbări aduce noua legeParlamentarii au introdus și o prevedere referitoare la situațiile apărute între momentul intrării în vigoare a Legii nr. 165/2026 și intrarea în vigoare a noii legi.Astfel, amendamentul adoptat de Camera Deputaților stabilește că „situațiile intervenite în perioada cuprinsă între data intrării în vigoare a Legii nr. 165/2026 și data intrării în vigoare a prezentei legi, care, potrivit articolului 550 din OUG nr. 57/2019 (Codul administrativ), astfel cum a fost modificat prin Legea nr. 165/2026, ar fi fost de natură să genereze o stare de incompatibilitate sau un conflict de interese, după caz, nu constituie incompatibilități sau conflict de interese, după caz, și nu atrag răspunderea juridică aferentă acestora”.Potrivit raportului, prevederea a fost justificată prin faptul că aplicarea noilor reguli fără o perioadă de tranziție ar fi putut avea consecințe asupra administrației publice.„Motivarea acestui text a fost în sensul că aplicarea fără o perioadă de tranziție poate genera pierderi de personal, dificultăți și blocaje în desfășurarea unor activități administrative esențiale”, mai arată documentul.UDMR a susținut modificările deși ministrul interimar al Dezvoltării Cseke Attila a declarat la Digi24 că informația potrivit căreia aleșii locali care lucrează la stat ar trebui să își suspende contractele de muncă a fost eronată și s-a propagat în administrația publică fără un document oficial al autorităților. Și unii liberali, printre care Ionuț Stroe și Nicoleta Pauliuc, au semnat amendamentul care salvează mandatele consilierilor locali și județeni.Modificarea, adoptată pe repede înainteParlamentarii au intervenit asupra legislației după ce consilierii locali și județeni au reclamat riscul de a-și pierde mandatele dacă nu renunță la funcțiile deținute în administrația publică.Pe 26 august, după adoptarea pe rând de către cele două Camere ale Legislativului, USR a anunțat că strânge semnături pentru a sesiza Curtea Constituțională cu privire la lege și partidul a susținut că Parlamentul a eliminat efectele unor incompatibilități deja produse.Prin promulgarea de către Nicușor Dan, modificările intră în circuitul de aplicare prevăzut de lege.
