Zbog toga me je iskreno sramota i zbog toga izvinite. How a Workout Nearly Turned Deadly for a Fit Athlete: A Rare Condition New

How a Workout Nearly Turned Deadly for a Fit Athlete: A Rare Condition

Madina Alam knew she should have stopped. But like many fit and healthy people during a workout, she figured she could push through the intensity of the pullups she was struggling to complete.Moments later, her body made the decision for her, as both of her arms began swelling to cartoonish, Popeye-like proportions.“It was a very intense workout, but I did sports growing up. I did bodybuilding competitions. I was used to pushing myself,” the 34-year-old told The Post. “But I didn’t realize what was going on.”What Alam dismissed as typical post-workout soreness would land her in the emergency room four days later — with the same condition that killed 24-year-old marathoner Rachel Apa just hours after she ran the New York City Marathon on Sunday.Madina Alam thought she was experiencing normal post-workout soreness, but four days later she was in the emergency room.A workout gone wrongIn 2022, Alam was working out weekly with a personal trainer in Charlotte, North Carolina.A licensed mental health counselor, she wasn’t preparing for a competition. “I just like to work out,” she explained. The trouble started after she completed a set of eccentric pullups, also known as negative pullups. Despite being fit and in shape, she hadn’t yet mastered the exercise.“I obviously did way too many,” she recalled. “My arms were swollen immediately after.” She remembers telling her trainer she couldn’t fully straighten her arms, but says “he didn’t really think much about it.”The pain and swelling only got worse throughout the day. Unable to move much, Alam stayed home for several days, not even changing her shirt so as to avoid raising her arms. Still, she hadn’t taken any over-the-counter painkillers.“Looking back at it, I’m like, ‘Madina, why did you not go [get medical help]?'” she said. “I thought it was gonna go away.” On FaceTime, even her trainer agreed. The therapist says her experience taught her that even fit, experienced athletes can push their bodies too far.But a friend raised another possibility: “Oh, you might have rhabdo,” he told her, referring to rhabdomyolysis, a rare, life-threatening medical condition that can occur after excessive exercise without rest. However, he brushed off the thought after learning her urine hadn’t changed color — a common but not universal warning sign of the condition, in which urine typically appears dark, tea-colored, red or cola-colored.Four days after the workout, Alam’s swollen arms had become so uncomfortable that she couldn’t sleep, waking up every few seconds. After she described her symptoms on a call to an urgent care clinic, the staff urged her to head to the emergency room.At the hospital, “they took me back immediately” to get examined, Alam said. By that point, her arms had puffed up an additional 12 pounds.Blood tests soon revealed that her creatine kinase levels, a marker of muscle damage, had reached 80,000. Normal numbers are under 200.This confirmed Alam did, in fact, have rhabdo, due to damaged muscle tissue breaking down and releasing proteins and electrolytes in her bloodstream.Alam was admitted and given an IV with fluids and electrolytes to help her kidney flush the excess muscle proteins and other substances from her system, while morphine helped manage the pain.“Trainers will look at me and go, ‘What’s rhabdo? Oh wow!’ and that makes me honestly cringe.”Madina Alam“I even remember one morning they had brought in a group of student doctors just because it’s kind of rare to see,” said Alam. After a week in the hospital, she was discharged, her arms having returned to their normal size. When rhabdo turns deadlyWhen Alam learned about Apa’s death, the news “felt like a gut punch.”“It was just like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe someone passed away from that,'” she said.Rachel Apa died just hours after running the NYC Marathon. Michelle ApaApa had developed rhabdo, the same condition that landed Alam in the hospital. Michelle ApaWhile Alam recovered, rhabdo can be fatal. As muscle tissue breaks down, the kidneys can become overwhelmed by the sudden influx of proteins and electrolytes, potentially leading to acute kidney failure.Excess potassium in the bloodstream can also disrupt the heart’s electrical signals, triggering potentially fatal arrhythmias or cardiac arrest.“It just makes me sad,” said Alam about Apa. “It makes me also appreciate that I caught it in time. As horrible as the story is, it will shed light on this, so more people will be aware of the symptoms.”“Hopefully, this doesn’t happen to someone else.”Alam is also urging personal trainers to learn about the condition. While she doesn’t blame her trainer for her rhabdo development, she believes his lack of awareness contributed to her not recognizing the warning signs or immediately seeking medical care. “I’ve shared [my story] actually with a lot of trainers,m and trainers will look at me and go, ‘What’s rhabdo? Oh wow!’ and that makes me honestly cringe,” she said. For others who look and feel fit and healthy, as both she and Apa did, Alam has one piece of age-old advice.“It sounds corny, but just listen to your body,” she urged.

Kurti Urges EU to Start Kosovo Membership Talks Amid Economic and Social Progress

Democrats Achieve Historic Senate Wins in Kansas and Texas

See more of our coverage in your search results. America has a case of the blues. The Democrats shattered records Tuesday night, becoming the first party to sweep both the House and the Senate in a Midterm election in 20 years, as dozens of historically safe red Republican seats fell.In a stunning rebuke of President Trump’s administration, Democrats picked up their first US Senate seat in Kansas in almost a century, one of at least seven Senate seats flipped during Tuesday’s blue tsunami.Republicans also lost Senate races in staunchly red Iowa, Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas.Meanwhile, Democrats also secured the House, making President Trump’s last two years potentially even harder. Here were some of Tuesday’s most shocking upsets:Democratic Senate candidate Texas state Rep. AP Photo/Eric GayLosin’ TexasIn the Lone Star State, James Talarico made history by becoming the first Democrat elected to the US Senate from Texas since 1988, beating state Attorney General Ken Paxton.Trump ally Paxton, 63, had unseated 24-year incumbent John Cornyn in May’s primary runoff, but his history of scandals and controversy doomed him in the voters’ eyes.Despite hefty financial backing, including nearly $200 million coming from the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, Paxton lost to Talarico by over one million voters, with AP calling the race just after 11 p.m. 55.2% to 42.9% in Talarico’s favor.Texas Gov. REUTERSGreg Abb-outIn possibly the biggest shock of the night, three-term Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott lost re-election to state Rep. Gina Hinojosa in a stunning upset which could have long-term ramifications in America’s second-most popular state. The seismic Democratic sweep in Texas now positions the once-Republican stronghold as a key 2028 battleground state. In other gubernatorial bloodbaths, Ohio and Georgia also both voted for Democratic governors — with Amy Acton besting former Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy in Ohio, and Keisha Lance Bottoms winning in Georgia. Ramaswamy’s campaign was derailed when he produced a controversial campaign ad featuring Acton’s estranged mother, who remained married to Acton’s alleged rapist after he was criminally charged.Bottoms’ win in the Peach State makes her the first black woman elected governor of a US state. Follow for live updates on the 2026 Midterm ElectionsKansas catastropheIn the Sunflower State, megachurch pastor Adam Hamilton became the first Democrat elected to the Senate from Kansas since 1932, stunning Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.).Hamilton won with 52.1% of the vote, compared with Marshall’s 45%, with 94% of ballots counted as of 11 p.m. Tuesday.Marshall, an obstetrician-gynecologist, came under fire over reports that he sued some 700 patients over unpaid bills, including an eight-month pregnant woman who was arrested after missing a medical debt payment with an 18% interest rate.U.S. Sen. AP Photo/Jeffrey CollinsNo family affairSouth Carolina Republican Darline Graham couldn’t keep her late brother Lindsey Graham’s US Senate seat, losing to Democrat Annie Andrews in another historic upset.Andrews became the first Democrat to win a Palmetto State Senate race since 1998, defeating Graham, who was plucked from obscurity by Gov. Henry McMaster (R-SC) to fill the seat following her brother’s death in July at age 71.Despite President Trump throwing his support behind Graham and joining her on the campaign trail, she lost by almost 100,000 votes, with AP calling the seat for Andrews with the vote tallies at 51.1% to 46.7%.More coverage of the 2026 midterm elections: Live updates on the midterm elections Pete Ricketts wins Nebraska Senate race, making Dan Osborn two-time loser Sean Duffy’s son-in-law Michael Alfonso wins Wisconsin seat to become youngest House member Far-left Dem Abdul El-Sayed defies bitter party mutiny to rout Mike Rogers in Michigan Senate race Peggy Flanagan wins Minnesota Senate race over Michele Tafoya Maine eventIn Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson defeated longtime Sen.
