8 reasons two people remember the same argument differently New

8 reasons two people remember the same argument differently

1. Each person notices a different part of the exchangeMemory can only preserve what attention picked up in the first place. During an argument, one person may focus on the words while the other monitors tone, facial expression or who walked away first. Later, both accounts can be sincere but incomplete. For example, “I never insulted you” may address the literal wording while missing an eye roll that shaped the other person’s experience. Before debating accuracy, ask what each person was paying attention to.2. Memory stores the gist better than exact wordingPeople often retain the meaning they took from a conversation rather than a transcript of it. “I need some time alone” may later be remembered as “You said you didn’t want me around” because rejection became the remembered gist. That does not make the second version an exact quotation, but it explains why it feels familiar. Separating “the words I recall” from “what I understood them to mean” can prevent an interpretation from being presented as verbatim fact.3. Your viewpoint changes what counts as the main eventThe speaker may remember their intention; the listener may remember the impact. Someone who cancelled dinner might focus on an unexpected work deadline, while their partner remembers waiting without an update. These accounts answer different questions: “Why did I do it?” and “What happened to me?” Neither perspective automatically settles the disagreement. A fuller reconstruction includes both: “You were under pressure, and I was left waiting because I did not know the plan had changed.”4. Strong emotion narrows attention toward certain detailsHeightened emotion can make some moments unusually vivid while leaving surrounding details poorly encoded. A cutting sentence may remain clear, yet what came immediately before or after becomes uncertain. Vividness is therefore not the same as completeness. After a tense meeting, an employee might clearly remember a manager saying “unacceptable” but forget that the word referred to one missed deadline, not their entire performance. Checking context matters, especially when one emotionally charged phrase dominates the memory.5. Later retellings can reshape the original memoryRemembering is reconstructive: each retelling can strengthen a particular version and incorporate later interpretations. If someone repeatedly describes a disagreement as “the day she humiliated me,” ambiguous details may gradually fit that frame. This need not involve deliberate exaggeration. A practical safeguard is to separate early records from later conclusions. A message written that evening may clarify timing, although texts and notes also capture only one viewpoint and should not be treated as perfect evidence.6. People remember actions that fit their existing expectationsExpectations help the mind interpret incomplete information, but they can also guide what gets noticed and recalled. If you already think a colleague is dismissive, a brief reply may stand out as further proof; their longer, helpful messages may feel less memorable. The expectation could be justified, mistaken or partly true—the memory alone cannot decide. When reviewing an argument, look for details that do not fit your first explanation, such as moments of cooperation or another plausible reason for the behaviour.7. Self-protection influences how responsibility gets reconstructedPeople commonly explain their own behaviour through circumstances while judging another person’s behaviour as evidence of character. “I snapped because I was exhausted” can coexist with “You snapped because you are disrespectful.” This asymmetry protects a coherent, decent self-image without requiring conscious dishonesty. Reverse the comparison to test it: describe both people’s actions in equally concrete language. “I interrupted twice; you raised your voice” is more useful than assigning one person circumstances and the other a permanent flaw.8. Confidence can grow even when accuracy does notA memory may feel increasingly certain because it has been rehearsed, discussed or woven into a clear story. Confidence tells you how convincing the memory feels now, not necessarily how precisely it matches the original exchange. Two people can therefore be equally certain and still disagree. When facts matter, compare messages, calendars or neutral witnesses rather than measuring who sounds surer. In ordinary relationships, it can also help to resolve the impact and future behaviour without forcing agreement on every disputed sentence.

Only Two in Five London Transport Crime Victims Report Incidents, Watchdog Finds New

Only Two in Five London Transport Crime Victims Report Incidents, Watchdog Finds

Victims of crime on public transport, including Isadora Medeiros (left) are being ‘fundamentally failed’ (Picture: Isadora Medeiros/Getty Images) Victims of crime on public transport in London are being ‘failed by fundamental flaws’ in the reporting process and a lack of CCTV, Metro can reveal. A sense of ‘disinterest’ from station staff, confusion about how to report incidents, and a lack of confidence that anything will happen is preventing people from reporting crimes, London TravelWatch found. Victims have also told Metro their cases were dropped because basic forms of evidence, including CCTV, were not working. Isadora Medeiros was travelling on the Elizabeth Line to see her friend in 2021 when a man asked for her number. She said no, and he then called her a ‘f***ing b****’ and threatened to rape and kill her. She was then slapped by the man, and she reported the incident to British Transport Police. But despite the attack occurring in the middle of the carriage in broad daylight – and Isabel filming the man – officers said they could not pursue the case as none of the CCTV was working. ‘I was told none of the cameras were working after he slapped me’ The man’s hand in front of Isadora before he slaps her (Picture: Provided by Isadora Medeiros) Isadora, now 24 and a primary school teacher, told Metro: ‘He began shouting at me, saying “you think you are so good”, and then said he would run me over with his car and rape me if he ever saw me again.’ She was told the cameras were not working at Stratford Station where the man got on, inside the train carriage, and at Ilford Station where the man got off. Isadora said: ‘I felt scared, I couldn’t get on the Elizabeth Line for months because I was scared I was going to see this man, and he was going to do something to me.’ Other victims have told Metro they have experienced ‘disinterest’ from staff, which made them feel unsupported. ‘Staff were completely unbothered when I told them’ In March, Victoria was upskirted on the Central Line by a man sat opposite her. After confronting him, she went to tell staff at Debden Station what happened. She said: ‘I knocked on the door of the ticket office and a man answered. I told him what happened, and he was completely unbothered. ‘He just told me, “oh well, looks like you need to text British Transport Police then”, and shut the door.’ Police closed the case as the man had jumped the barriers, and once again, there was no CCTV in the carriage she was on. Siwan Hayward, TfL’s Director of Security, Policing and Enforcement, said: ‘The incidents highlighted are deeply concerning and we are very sorry that Victoria and Isadora experienced this on our network. ‘We want every victim to feel confident in coming forward and to know they will be listened to and supported. While we recognise there is always more to do to improve victims’ experiences, we are working closely with the police to strengthen reporting, support investigations and bring offenders to justice.’ Only two out of five victims report crime This lack of trust in the reporting process means the true scale of crime in the public transport network is unknown, with London TravelWatch finding only two out of five victims came forward. TravelWatch is urging for the creation of a single streamlined system within the reporting process, as multiple operators, public authorities and police forces can be ‘confusing for victims’. BTP Chief Inspector Cheryl Ling said: ‘We agree that reporting pathways should be accessible and straightforward so passengers can report crimes and their concerns as quickly as possible. ‘We continue to work with our partners, including Transport for London, the Mayor’s Office and the Metropolitan Police, to make the capital’s transport network as safe as we can for everyone.’ Rail Union TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust said: ‘This is really valuable research from London TravelWatch and it reflects many of our own concerns about the rising tide of violence and abusive behavior on our railways both in London and across the country. ‘There is much which needs to be done, including more training for those on the front line, but in truth the big things which will make a difference are more staff on the railway and increased budgets, including for British Transport Police.’ Metro has contacted British Transport Police and Transport for London for comment. Hoxha: Albania to contribute to the International Stabilization Force for Gaza

Brooke George faces longer Dubai detention after witnesses miss murder hearing

Updated 14:12 12 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 13:50 12 Oct 2026 GMT+1Brooke George has been banged up since June and is becoming 'increasingly upset', her family saidA 23-year-old influencer charged with murder and held in a notorious Dubai detention centre has been banned from calling home, her concerned family has claimed.Brooke George, who hails from Kent, could be executed by a firing squad if she is convicted of murdering a man she met online, William Treeby, 26, in June this year. She claims that she acted in self-defence after he allegedly attacked her - and since being arrested at the airport while trying to flee back to the UK, she has been locked up at an infamous detention centre.According to advocacy group Detained in Dubai, George's loved ones have expressed serious concerns about the conditions she is being kept in at the notorious Bur Dubai police detention centre.AdvertThe content creator - known for sharing beauty routines and lip-syncing videos on social media - is said to be sleep-deprived and has now reportedly been forbidden from making international phone calls. The Brit has been charged with the murder of 26-year-old William Treeby (Detained in Dubai)During the very brief communication she has had recently with her mother Tess, George complained that bright lights remain on in every room around the clock, leaving her unable to sleep. The mum has said she is becoming increasingly 'worried about her mental state' after George's trial was adjourned until 28 October last week, meaning she will have to endure at least another few weeks at the detention centre.Detained in Dubai said that the facility was 'never designed for long-term habitation' in its latest update on George's case, adding: "British citizens who were locked up there for only hours during the Iran strikes were terrified at the thought of spending days there, let alone months."The latest update on George's trialGeorge was arrested at Dubai International Airport in June and taken into custody and charged with murder after Treeby was fatally stabbed. This is a crime that can carry the death penalty in the UAE - meaning she could be executed by a firing squad. The young woman met Treeby online, according to reports, before the pair developed a relationship which led to her flying out to Dubai to meet him.But on her second visit to the holiday hotspot, she claims Treeby became controlling and exhibited abusive behaviour. After an argument between them allegedly turned violent, George reached for a kitchen knife in what she claims was an act of self-defence.Her latest court hearing took place last Wednesday (8 October), but Detained in Dubai said that prosecution witnesses who had been summoned to attend did not turn up. As a result, her trial was adjourned until 28 October.George's family are becoming increasingly 'worried about her mental state' (Detained in Dubai)The court ordered her continued detention while it awaits evidence from the remaining witnesses.George's prolonged stay at the Bur Dubai police detention centre has taken a significant toll on her mental state, according to her relatives. Her mother Tess told Detained in Dubai that as well as the lights remaining on constantly, the cries of babies and children nearby also make it difficult to sleep.George was reportedly told she would receive medication to aid her sleep, but campaigners say she has still not been given any - while her contact with the outside world is allegedly being restricted."She can’t sleep," Tess said. "She can barely call home. I’m getting very worried about her mental state."Tess alleges that the recent calls she had with her daughter were 'cut off after approximately two minutes' and that the 23-year-old 'has now been told she cannot make international calls'.Brit, 23, is 'suffering terribly' behind barsThe founder of Detained in Dubai, Radha Stirling, said that George is 'suffering terribly' at the detention centre and is becoming 'increasingly upset'."Her mother is left wondering how much worse things will become before she hears her daughter’s voice again," she explained. "Two minutes on the telephone, followed by an abrupt disconnection, is distressing for everyone involved."For Brooke, those calls are a lifeline. For her family, they are the only opportunity to hear how she is coping and offer some reassurance."Amid the delay in George's trial, Stirling has called for the concerns around the Brit's wellbeing to be 'addressed now', adding: "Her health cannot be put on hold until the next court hearing."The campaign group said it is working to secure her access to medical care, sleep medication where clinically appropriate, and reliable telephone contact with her family."We will do everything we can to help," Stirling said. "Brooke needs to know she has not been forgotten. Her family needs to be able to speak to her, and her worsening distress needs proper medical attention."Whatever the allegations, she is entitled to humane treatment while her case is heard."Featured Image Credit: Detained in DubaiTopics: Dubai, Crime, World News, UK News
