Only Two in Five London Transport Crime Victims Report Incidents, Watchdog Finds New

Only Two in Five London Transport Crime Victims Report Incidents, Watchdog Finds

Victims of crime on public transport, including Isadora Medeiros (left) are being ‘fundamentally failed’ (Picture: Isadora Medeiros/Getty Images) Victims of crime on public transport in London are being ‘failed by fundamental flaws’ in the reporting process and a lack of CCTV, Metro can reveal. A sense of ‘disinterest’ from station staff, confusion about how to report incidents, and a lack of confidence that anything will happen is preventing people from reporting crimes, London TravelWatch found. Victims have also told Metro their cases were dropped because basic forms of evidence, including CCTV, were not working. Isadora Medeiros was travelling on the Elizabeth Line to see her friend in 2021 when a man asked for her number. She said no, and he then called her a ‘f***ing b****’ and threatened to rape and kill her. She was then slapped by the man, and she reported the incident to British Transport Police. But despite the attack occurring in the middle of the carriage in broad daylight – and Isabel filming the man – officers said they could not pursue the case as none of the CCTV was working. ‘I was told none of the cameras were working after he slapped me’ The man’s hand in front of Isadora before he slaps her (Picture: Provided by Isadora Medeiros) Isadora, now 24 and a primary school teacher, told Metro: ‘He began shouting at me, saying “you think you are so good”, and then said he would run me over with his car and rape me if he ever saw me again.’ She was told the cameras were not working at Stratford Station where the man got on, inside the train carriage, and at Ilford Station where the man got off. Isadora said: ‘I felt scared, I couldn’t get on the Elizabeth Line for months because I was scared I was going to see this man, and he was going to do something to me.’ Other victims have told Metro they have experienced ‘disinterest’ from staff, which made them feel unsupported. ‘Staff were completely unbothered when I told them’ In March, Victoria was upskirted on the Central Line by a man sat opposite her. After confronting him, she went to tell staff at Debden Station what happened. She said: ‘I knocked on the door of the ticket office and a man answered. I told him what happened, and he was completely unbothered. ‘He just told me, “oh well, looks like you need to text British Transport Police then”, and shut the door.’ Police closed the case as the man had jumped the barriers, and once again, there was no CCTV in the carriage she was on. Siwan Hayward, TfL’s Director of Security, Policing and Enforcement, said: ‘The incidents highlighted are deeply concerning and we are very sorry that Victoria and Isadora experienced this on our network. ‘We want every victim to feel confident in coming forward and to know they will be listened to and supported. While we recognise there is always more to do to improve victims’ experiences, we are working closely with the police to strengthen reporting, support investigations and bring offenders to justice.’ Only two out of five victims report crime This lack of trust in the reporting process means the true scale of crime in the public transport network is unknown, with London TravelWatch finding only two out of five victims came forward. TravelWatch is urging for the creation of a single streamlined system within the reporting process, as multiple operators, public authorities and police forces can be ‘confusing for victims’. BTP Chief Inspector Cheryl Ling said: ‘We agree that reporting pathways should be accessible and straightforward so passengers can report crimes and their concerns as quickly as possible. ‘We continue to work with our partners, including Transport for London, the Mayor’s Office and the Metropolitan Police, to make the capital’s transport network as safe as we can for everyone.’ Rail Union TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust said: ‘This is really valuable research from London TravelWatch and it reflects many of our own concerns about the rising tide of violence and abusive behavior on our railways both in London and across the country. ‘There is much which needs to be done, including more training for those on the front line, but in truth the big things which will make a difference are more staff on the railway and increased budgets, including for British Transport Police.’ Metro has contacted British Transport Police and Transport for London for comment. Brooke George faces longer Dubai detention after witnesses miss murder hearing New

Brooke George faces longer Dubai detention after witnesses miss murder hearing

Updated 14:12 12 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 13:50 12 Oct 2026 GMT+1Brooke George has been banged up since June and is becoming 'increasingly upset', her family saidA 23-year-old influencer charged with murder and held in a notorious Dubai detention centre has been banned from calling home, her concerned family has claimed.Brooke George, who hails from Kent, could be executed by a firing squad if she is convicted of murdering a man she met online, William Treeby, 26, in June this year. She claims that she acted in self-defence after he allegedly attacked her - and since being arrested at the airport while trying to flee back to the UK, she has been locked up at an infamous detention centre.According to advocacy group Detained in Dubai, George's loved ones have expressed serious concerns about the conditions she is being kept in at the notorious Bur Dubai police detention centre.AdvertThe content creator - known for sharing beauty routines and lip-syncing videos on social media - is said to be sleep-deprived and has now reportedly been forbidden from making international phone calls. The Brit has been charged with the murder of 26-year-old William Treeby (Detained in Dubai)During the very brief communication she has had recently with her mother Tess, George complained that bright lights remain on in every room around the clock, leaving her unable to sleep. The mum has said she is becoming increasingly 'worried about her mental state' after George's trial was adjourned until 28 October last week, meaning she will have to endure at least another few weeks at the detention centre.Detained in Dubai said that the facility was 'never designed for long-term habitation' in its latest update on George's case, adding: "British citizens who were locked up there for only hours during the Iran strikes were terrified at the thought of spending days there, let alone months."The latest update on George's trialGeorge was arrested at Dubai International Airport in June and taken into custody and charged with murder after Treeby was fatally stabbed. This is a crime that can carry the death penalty in the UAE - meaning she could be executed by a firing squad. The young woman met Treeby online, according to reports, before the pair developed a relationship which led to her flying out to Dubai to meet him.But on her second visit to the holiday hotspot, she claims Treeby became controlling and exhibited abusive behaviour. After an argument between them allegedly turned violent, George reached for a kitchen knife in what she claims was an act of self-defence.Her latest court hearing took place last Wednesday (8 October), but Detained in Dubai said that prosecution witnesses who had been summoned to attend did not turn up. As a result, her trial was adjourned until 28 October.George's family are becoming increasingly 'worried about her mental state' (Detained in Dubai)The court ordered her continued detention while it awaits evidence from the remaining witnesses.George's prolonged stay at the Bur Dubai police detention centre has taken a significant toll on her mental state, according to her relatives. Her mother Tess told Detained in Dubai that as well as the lights remaining on constantly, the cries of babies and children nearby also make it difficult to sleep.George was reportedly told she would receive medication to aid her sleep, but campaigners say she has still not been given any - while her contact with the outside world is allegedly being restricted."She can’t sleep," Tess said. "She can barely call home. I’m getting very worried about her mental state."Tess alleges that the recent calls she had with her daughter were 'cut off after approximately two minutes' and that the 23-year-old 'has now been told she cannot make international calls'.Brit, 23, is 'suffering terribly' behind barsThe founder of Detained in Dubai, Radha Stirling, said that George is 'suffering terribly' at the detention centre and is becoming 'increasingly upset'."Her mother is left wondering how much worse things will become before she hears her daughter’s voice again," she explained. "Two minutes on the telephone, followed by an abrupt disconnection, is distressing for everyone involved."For Brooke, those calls are a lifeline. For her family, they are the only opportunity to hear how she is coping and offer some reassurance."Amid the delay in George's trial, Stirling has called for the concerns around the Brit's wellbeing to be 'addressed now', adding: "Her health cannot be put on hold until the next court hearing."The campaign group said it is working to secure her access to medical care, sleep medication where clinically appropriate, and reliable telephone contact with her family."We will do everything we can to help," Stirling said. "Brooke needs to know she has not been forgotten. Her family needs to be able to speak to her, and her worsening distress needs proper medical attention."Whatever the allegations, she is entitled to humane treatment while her case is heard."Featured Image Credit: Detained in DubaiTopics: Dubai, Crime, World News, UK News

Cemil Tugay transfer tepkilerine yanıt verdi: İzmir’in yaşam tarzı değişmeyecek New

Cemil Tugay transfer tepkilerine yanıt verdi: İzmir’in yaşam tarzı değişmeyecek

24 yıldır İzmir'i valisiyle, kaymakamıyla, emniyetiyle, milli eğitimiyle, sağlığıyla ve yüzlerce kurumuyla zaten hükümet yönetiyor" ifadelerine yer verdi. www.sozcu.com.tr internet sitesinde yayınlanan yazı, haber ve fotoğrafların her türlü telif hakkı Mega Ajans ve Rek. 10 Reasons Honest People Remember the Same Event Differently New

10 Reasons Honest People Remember the Same Event Differently

1. Attention determines which details enter memory at allPeople do not record an event like cameras; they encode the parts receiving their attention. During a tense meeting, one colleague may focus on the manager’s words while another notices the manager’s impatient tone and folded arms. Both later report what stood out to them. Their accounts differ before forgetting even begins because each person stored different information. Attention explains many gaps, although it does not mean every interpretation of the noticed details is equally accurate.2. Expectations shape how ambiguous moments are understoodWhen information is unclear, the mind uses prior expectations to interpret it. If you expect a neighbour to be unfriendly, a brief wave may register as dismissive; someone who knows the neighbour is rushing may read it as distracted politeness. That initial interpretation can become part of the memory, making it difficult to separate what happened from what it seemed to mean. Expectations influence perception, but they do not prove that a person imagined the entire event.3. Memory preserves the gist better than exact wordingPeople often retain the general meaning of a conversation while losing its precise language. After hearing, “I’m not sure this plan is ready,” someone may later remember, “She said the plan would fail.” The remembered version captures a negative gist but strengthens the original claim. This is why arguments over exact phrases are hard to settle from memory alone. Remembering the substance can still be useful, but quotation marks imply a level of precision that memory may not support.4. Familiar scripts quietly fill gaps in recallA script is a mental outline of what usually happens in a familiar situation. It helps people understand events quickly, but it can also supply plausible details that were never observed. Someone recalling a restaurant meal might confidently mention receiving menus before ordering, even if that restaurant used a wall display. The detail fits the usual sequence. Such errors are generally ordinary reconstruction, not deliberate lying, and unusual features are more likely to be remembered when they attracted attention.5. Later knowledge can rewrite an earlier impressionOnce people know how an event ended, the outcome can make earlier clues appear more obvious. After a project misses its deadline, a team member may remember the launch meeting as clearly chaotic, although the risks felt manageable at the time. This hindsight effect can produce sincere claims such as, “We all knew it wouldn’t work.” A useful correction is to consult notes or messages created before the outcome, when uncertainty was still visible rather than edited by later knowledge.6. The source of a detail can become detachedPeople sometimes remember information but misremember where it came from, a mistake called source confusion. You may recall that a restaurant closed and believe a friend told you, when you actually read an unverified neighbourhood post. In a family story, a detail heard repeatedly can eventually feel personally witnessed. The content may be correct even when its source is wrong, so asking “How do I know that?” is often more revealing than asking only “Do I remember it?”7. Each retelling can subtly update the memoryRecalling an event is not always simple playback. When a memory is brought to mind, current emotions, new facts and the language used in retelling can become woven into its later form. A mildly awkward date described repeatedly as a “disaster” may acquire sharper, more humiliating edges over time. This does not mean every recollection changes dramatically. It means repeated retelling can preserve a polished narrative more effectively than the event’s original uncertainty and mixed details.8. Other people’s versions can enter your own accountMemories are socially influenced, especially when people discuss an event before recalling it independently. If one wedding guest says the speech lasted half an hour, others may adopt that estimate even if it lasted twelve minutes. Repetition and group agreement can make the shared version feel familiar, and familiarity may be mistaken for personal recollection. Independent written accounts collected early are therefore more informative than a consensus formed after extensive discussion, though agreement can still reflect genuinely shared observation.9. Confidence reflects coherence, not guaranteed accuracyA memory can feel vivid and internally consistent without being exact. Confidence may grow because a story has been repeated, fits existing beliefs or contains striking images—not necessarily because every detail is correct. Two siblings might both sound certain about who started an old argument while offering incompatible accounts. Their certainty alone cannot decide the issue. Specific records, independent witnesses and contemporaneous messages usually provide better checks, while hesitation should not automatically be treated as evidence of dishonesty.10. Disagreement improves when claims are separated by typeMemory disputes often combine three different claims: what was directly observed, what was inferred and what the event meant emotionally. Separating them reduces false either-or battles. Instead of saying, “You ignored me,” someone might say, “You looked at your phone while I spoke; I interpreted that as disinterest, and I felt dismissed.” The observation may be checked, while the interpretation can be discussed and the feeling acknowledged. This method does not settle every dispute, but it shows exactly where recollections diverge.

Adam Abdihakeem Adam, 18, walked free out of jail two days after allegedly opening fire at a Minnesota homecoming celebration. Hennepin County JailJail records list a $100,000 bail or bond option without conditions and show Adam was released at 7:04 p.m. Oct. 10. He faces two felony counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and one count of second-degree riot while armed with a dangerous weapon. His next court appearance is scheduled for Monday afternoon. The shooting injured an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old and launched a multi-agency hunt for those involved, according to Eden Prairie police.Investigators allege the violence began after two cars entered a parking lot and a fight involving about 10 people broke out. The driver of one car got out, opened fire on the victims and fled, according to charging documents cited by affiliate FOX 9 Minneapolis.Authorities identified that driver as Adam, who allegedly was driving his brother’s car. Investigators tracked his phone with the vehicle before, during and after the shooting, the outlet reported. He then allegedly abandoned the phone and changed his number. The shooting at Eden Prairie High School left two people injured. KARE 11A search of his St. Louis Park home turned up clothing matching what the shooter wore in surveillance video, according to the charges cited by FOX 9.Police caught up with Adam Oct. 8 near Highway 55 and Penn Avenue in Minneapolis, taking him into custody without incident. The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office credited detectives with its Auto Theft Task Force and West Metro Drug Task Force, along with St. Louis Park and Hopkins officers, with safely boxing in the vehicle.“I’m incredibly proud of our officers and investigators who have worked nonstop alongside our law enforcement partners to identify those responsible and hold them accountable,” Eden Prairie Police Chief Matt Sackett said after the arrest. The case has intensified concerns about Somali gang-related violence across the metro area, prompting regional public safety agencies to meet under the coordination of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Police leaders said they are sharing intelligence and coordinating investigations to prevent further shootings.Republican U.S. Senate candidate Michele Tafoya pointed to the homecoming shooting and other recent violence while warning last week that Minnesotans increasingly feel under threat.“Our law enforcement here are calling it out as the product of Somali gang violence, and we’ve got to identify it, and we have to find a way to deal with it,” Tafoya told Fox News Digital.Eden Prairie police also are investigating an Oct. 5 shots-fired incident at a Speedway gas station, where no injuries were reported. Investigators said they have not identified a connection between that incident and the homecoming shooting.Sackett said the homecoming investigation remains active, with additional arrests or charges possible.

Fort Hood victim’s brother urges Trump to abandon execution livestream New

Fort Hood victim’s brother urges Trump to abandon execution livestream

Published 10:04 12 Oct 2026 GMT+1"Will it bring my brother back?"The brother of Michael Pearson, one of the 13 killed by Nidal Malik Hasan, has written a letter to the White House warning about the 'serious consequences' of live-streaming the execution. On December 3, Nidal Malik Hasan is set to be executed by firing squad in Fort Hood, Texas. It will be the first execution by firing squad since 1945.Hasan, a former US Army major and psychiatrist, fatally shot 13 people and injured over 30 others on November 5, 2009. Thirty of those he wounded and twelve he killed were soldiers.During the mass shooting at Fort Hood, Hasan was shot and left paralyzed from the waist down.AdvertIn 2013, he was convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of premeditated murder and sentenced to death by a military jury. Now 56, Hasan is set to face his death by firing squad, but his execution has also since been confirmed by the Pentagon. It follows Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth promising the public would be able to 'watch it' and Donald Trump telling reporters he 'absolutely' approved the livestream plan, but then later saying he was yet to make his final 'decision,' as reported by NBC News. And the brother of one of Army Private First Class (Pfc) Michael Pearson who was among the 13 killed by Hasan in 2009 has since spoken out about the upcoming execution, begging officials to 'reconsider' live-streaming it. Michael Pearson was killed aged 22 (Fred C Dames)Brother's letter to the White House to 'reconsider the decision to livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan'Kristopher Craig, an Army veteran and brother to 22-year-old Michael Pearson who lost his life after Hasan opened fire in 2009, wrote a letter to Trump and Hegseth which he shared exclusively with Newsweek. The letter asks the officials to 'reconsider the decision to livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan'. Reflecting on how he's had to live with his brother's death and 'the consequences of what happened that day' for 17 years, Craig has thought about 'grief, anger, forgiveness and justice' but never thought he'd have to think about his brother's death becoming 'part of another public spectacle'.Stating his brother's intentions joining the Army for 'opportunities' and 'a better future' Craig dismissed the idea of his brother becoming 'a symbol or a political statement'. He continued: "When you speak about justice for the victims of Fort Hood, I ask you to remember that you are speaking about people whose lives were much larger than the circumstances of their deaths." Craig explained he does not want the memory of his brother to be 'tied to the public broadcast of another human being's death,' but for him to be remembered 'for the person he was, full of goodness, his hopes, the life he was trying to build, and everything he might have become if he had been allowed to grow older'.And for the other 12 killed to have that too, 'not merely as names invoked to explain or defend a government decision'. His letter then poses multiple questions to the White House about broadcasting Hasan's execution. Hasan killed 13 people (Joe Raedle/Getty Images)Craig's letter asks Trump and Hegseth to 'not livestream this execution' Craig states: "Does witnessing another person's death make someone less likely to commit violence? Does it make our communities safer? Or does it simply give the public another act of violence to watch, this time carried out by the government?" He reflected on the history of the country in moving away from public executions, because of how 'troubling' it is to turn someone's death an 'event' which people can see on thier phones, computers or TVs. He questioned the 'purpose' of the broadcast, given it won't bring is brother back, nor 'restore the futures that were stolen from the 13 people' and nor will it 'ease the grief' felt by loved ones. Appealing to Trump and Hegseth to 'not livestream this execution,' Craig said: "There is a difference between accountability and spectacle, and there is a difference between honoring the dead and inviting the public to watch someone else die in their name."The letter is addressed to Trump and Hegseth (Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images)Craig says a live execution of Hasan would only bring him 'sadness, anger and pain' While 'respect[ing]' those who feel like it 'will bring closure,' Craig stated for himself, a live execution 'brings no comfort,' but actually 'sadness, anger, and the painful feeling that my brother's death is being used to justify something I find deeply wrong."[...] Do not make the deaths of our loved ones the justification for turning another death into a public event. Whatever happens to Nidal Hasan, let it happen without an audience assembled by the government to witness his final moments.“I have lived long enough with the knowledge of what violence took from my family. I do not want my brother's memory used to give violence an audience.“Michael deserved the chance to live a full life, and he was denied that chance. The least we can do now is remember that his life was worth more than the way it ended. We should not have to watch another human being die to remember the value of the lives we lost." And the Pentagon responded. The Pentagon and White House's response to the letter When contacted by Newsweek, a Pentagon spokesperson declined to comment, stating they had 'nothing to provide' and the outlet did not hear back from The White House.
