Eva Marie Saint Dies at 102 After a Legendary Hollywood Career

She was 102.The “On the Waterfront” star died Tuesday of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles, a family spokesperson announced, per the Hollywood Reporter.Page Six has reached out to a rep for Saint for additional comment.Born in Newark, New Jersey, Saint’s career spanned over seven decades and included an Academy Award, an Emmy and a role in one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most famous movies.Eva Marie Saint, seen here in 2019, has died. She was first featured on the live NBC-TV show “Campus Hoopla” in 1946, before starring in a 1949 Life magazine feature article about life as a struggling actor earning little while trying to make ends meet in New York. At the same time, she was racking up theater credits. In the 1950s, she earned Emmy nominations for her roles in Paddy Chayefsky’s “Middle of the Night” and a television musical version of “Our Town,” which also featured Frank Sinatra and Paul Newman. She (seen here in the 1954 movie “On the Waterfront”) got her start on the New York stage and live television. Getty ImagesSaint made her feature film debut in 1954’s Elia Kazan-helmed “On the Waterfront,” opposite Marlon Brando and Karl Malden, which later earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. At the time she accepted the award, Saint was heavily pregnant with her son, Darrell, whom she shared with her husband, Jeffrey Hayden. The couple — who also shared daughter Laurette — was married for 65 years until Hayden died in 2016. “If you ever see footage of me — when they announce my name — you can see me pause and wait a moment,” she shared in a 2010 interview about winning the Oscar. “Jeff had his thumb on my thigh; I couldn’t get up. So I slowly walked up and said something like, ‘I’m so excited I might have the baby right here.'”She ultimately gave birth two days after accepting her award. She later called Brando (seen here together in 1954) “probably the finest actor I’ve ever worked with.” Corbis via Getty ImagesSaint won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1955 for “On the Waterfront” (as seen here). Bettmann ArchiveDuring the same interview, she recalled the intense auditioning process for the role, where they asked her how much she “weighed, [her] height and [her] bust size.”“And I thought, “This is silly. This is not for me. I want to stay in the theater. Which I think I certainly would have had we stayed in New York,” she explained before reminiscing about meeting Brando and improvising a scene together.“He put the radio on, and we started dancing,” she said. “He did something to flip my skirt, and I was so embarrassed I cried a little bit afterward. It was too much; it was all too much. But Kazan saw the chemistry, and he could see that it could work for the movie.”Saint went on to gush about Brando, calling him “wonderful” and “probably the finest actor I’ve ever worked with.”Saint, who was pregnant when she won, shared two children with her husband, Jeffrey Hayden (seen all together in 1957). Corbis via Getty ImagesHer next big film role was in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest” (seen here in 1959 with co-star Cary Grant). Getty ImagesHitchcock ultimately cast Saint over a slew of other blondes in “North by Northwest,” which is widely considered one of his masterpieces and ranked No. 40 on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time. The director, who infamously took an unhealthy interest in his female stars, personally chose her costumes during a shopping trip to Bergdorf Goodman in New York City.Saint’s other prominent movies included “Exodus,” “The Sandpiper” with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and “A Hatful of Rain.”‘The iconic actress marked her return to the small screen in the 70s and 80s. She reunited with her “On the Waterfront” co-star Karl Malden in the television movie “Fatal Vision” and was featured in a recurring role as Cybill Shepherd’s mother on “Moonlighting.”Later roles included a part in 2005’s “Because of Winn-Dixie” (as seen here). ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett CollectionSaint delighted movie fans when she presented the award for Best Costume Design at the 90th Oscars in 2018 (as seen here). Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty ImagesIn 2005, she was introduced to an entirely new audience for her roles in the beloved children’s film “Because of Winn-Dixie” and, the following year, in “Superman Returns.”In 2018, she made a memorable return to the screen when she presented the Best Costume Design award at the 90th Academy Awards.Saint remained spry and nimble in her old age, telling People ahead of her 100th birthday in 2024 that she planned to celebrate the milestone number with four generations of family members.“I certainly don’t feel 100 years old,” she shared. “I continue to take walks out in the fresh air, like watching baseball — especially the Los Angeles Dodgers- and enjoy time with my family and friends. A good life.”She is survived by her two children and four grandchildren. Why Two Officers Who Tasered 92-Year-Old Donald Burgess Were Sacked New

Why Two Officers Who Tasered 92-Year-Old Donald Burgess Were Sacked

Published 21:47 6 Oct 2026 GMT+1PCs Stephen Smith and Rachel Comotto used inappropriate force when dealing with the 92-year-old Two police officers who used a Taser, baton and synthetic pepper spray on a 92-year-old amputee have been sacked.PCs Stephen Smith and Rachel Comotto responded to a call at a care home in St Leonards, East Sussex, on June 21 2022, following a report of resident Donald Burgess holding a knife and threatening to stab staff.Police bodycam footage showed the two officers entering a room where Donald, who was in a wheelchair due to having an amputated leg, had been isolated. The 92-year-old was holding a cutlery knife as the PCs approached him.AdvertThe Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said that within a minute-and-a-half of them entering the room, both officers used force on Donald.PC Smith was seen using Pava spray in the elderly man’s face and struck the arm holding the knife with a baton.PC Stephen Smith and his colleague PC Rachel Comotto have been fired (Lucy North/PA Wire)PC Comotto then used a Taser on Donald. In a ruling on Tuesday (6 October), the IOPC said both officers used ‘excessive force’ on Donald.Following the incident, PC Comotto was also found to have shared an inappropriate comment about it on Facebook. The misconduct hearing was told PC Comotto received a Facebook comment that read: “Happy birthday, the care home is getting closer and closer” with wink and laugh emojis. To which she replied: “We all know what happens in care homes,” adding with a lightning bolt emoji. On PC Comotto accepted writing the comment on the day of the incident. After the two officers used inappropriate force against him, Donald was taken to hospital and later contracted Covid-19.He died 22 days later, aged 93.Sussex Police said the evidence did not indicate the officers’ actions caused or contributed to the death.PC Rachel Comotto also admitted to making an inappropriate comment on Facebook (Lucy North/PA Wire)PC Smith and PC Comotto were cleared of assault after a Southwark Crown Court trial in May 2025, but were dismissed without notice on Tuesday, the IOPC said. They will also be put on the College of Policing’s barred list, banning them from working in policing.IOPC director of engagement Emily Barry said: “We know that footage of this incident showing the force used by the officers on Mr Burgess has caused widespread concern and anger.“This was not a fast-paced incident where the officers or other care home residents were in immediate danger.“Mr Burgess, who was wheelchair-bound and holding a cutlery knife, was isolated from other residents and clearly posed little risk to the officers. The Independent Office for Police Conduct said the pair used 'excessive force' (IOPC/PA Wire)“Any use of force should have been a last resort and only used when necessary.“Rather than de-escalating the situation they immediately threatened Mr Burgess with force and then discharged Pava spray, struck him with a baton and tasered him when he didn’t drop the knife.“Their actions were clearly excessive and unreasonable, and PC Comotto then displayed further poor judgment by joking about tasering Mr Burgess on social media afterwards.“Their actions have damaged the public’s trust and confidence in policing and they have been held accountable and dismissed from policing.”Donald’s family said they welcomed the decision, but their solicitor has asked for the inquest into his death to be resumed, saying there are unanswered questions about the force used by the officers and the actions of the care home.“We remain concerned that opportunities to de-escalate the situation were missed, including the fact that family members who lived nearby were not contacted by the staff at Park Beck nursing home before the police were called,” the family said.“Donald was a much-loved family man. We want him to be remembered for the life he lived, not simply for the events that brought us to this point.”Featured Image Credit: Family Handout/PA WireTopics: UK News, Crime

Christa Pike Conscious and Speaking After Failed Execution, Lawyers Say

Updated 23:22 6 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 22:19 6 Oct 2026 GMT+1Pike is understood to have been unconscious in critical condition since her failed executionChrista Pike is reportedly conscious and speaking after Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute her by lethal injection. In an emailed statement shared with The Tennessean, lawyers Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason said, “Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking, and continues to receive critical medical care, reports The Tennessean. “Despite the severe damage she endured to her arms, she is still handcuffed and shackled to the bed. Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery.”Pike was given two doses of the lethal poison pentobarbital by the Tennessee Department of Correction on September 30 but the attempt to execute her failed.AdvertChrista Pike has been on death row for the last 30 years. (Christa Pike’s legal team)She was reported to have been crying, whispering and complaining of the pain in her arm by her lawyers before she fell unconscious in front of shocked witnesses. She was rushed to hospital by ambulance and remained unconscious in critical condition until today. Her lawyers expressed their gratitude to first responders “who treated Christa like a human and have provided exceptional care to her”.Christa Pike survived her executionThe lawyers most recent statement is the first to indicate any recovery on the part of Pike since her failed execution on Wednesday. The Tennessee Department of Correction released a statement saying it could provide no information on her condition except that she had been taken to hospital.Pike received her death sentence after the 1995 murder of her classmate Colleen Slemmer. Her lawyers claimed her arm was left burned and bruised because of the injection and it was feared she would not recover.Colleen Slemmer was tortured before being murdered by Christa Pike and her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, back in January 1995 (YouTube/WBIR)Dr Joel Zivot, a professor of anaesthesiology and surgery in Atlanta and a consultant to Pike's legal team said the latest development “bodes well for a good recovery”.But he cautioned it could be weeks or months before her exact recovery could be assessed.“She’s still in the ICU,” he said. “She has recovered to a certain degree that she’s able to be off a ventilator and able to speak, but in no way would I announce her free of further serious risk.“There’s still a lot of bad things that can happen here, even when everyone is doing their job well.”Pike’s legal team are due in court on Wednesday as they seek details on the failed lethal injection, including an order for Tennessee to preserve evidence relating to the botched execution.Featured Image Credit: (Police handout)Topics: Christa Pike

9 Signs You’re Abandoning Your Own Needs to Keep the Peace New

9 Signs You’re Abandoning Your Own Needs to Keep the Peace

1. You rehearse simple requests before saying them aloudWhen asking for something reasonable feels risky, you may spend hours perfecting your wording. You soften the request, anticipate objections and prepare to withdraw it at the first hint of discomfort. This matters because constant rehearsal teaches you that your needs require a legal defense. Try stating one small request plainly: “I need an hour to myself tonight.” Clarity may feel exposed at first, but it gives others a fair chance to respond to what you actually need.2. You say yes before checking your real capacityAn automatic yes can protect you from someone else’s disappointment while quietly creating resentment, exhaustion or panic for you. The problem is not generosity; it is agreeing before consulting your time, energy and priorities.Build in a pause instead of forcing an immediate answer. Say, “Let me check and get back to you.” Even a few minutes can separate genuine willingness from reflexive compliance. A thoughtful yes is more trustworthy than a quick yes you later regret.3. You treat other people’s moods as your responsibilitySomeone becomes quiet, irritated or distant, and you immediately search for what you did wrong. You may overexplain, apologize or offer solutions before they have even told you what is happening.Caring about people is healthy; assuming ownership of every emotional shift is costly. Ask once if something is wrong, then let the person answer. Their mood may involve work, grief, fatigue or an issue they need to manage themselves. Concern does not require taking control.4. You edit your preferences to avoid seeming difficultYou say you do not mind where to eat, what to watch or how plans unfold—even when you do. These choices look minor, but repeatedly erasing your preferences can make relationships feel strangely lonely.Practice expressing low-stakes opinions without apologizing: “I’d prefer the earlier time,” or “That restaurant isn’t my favorite.” You are not demanding total control. You are allowing yourself to be known. Healthy connection needs information about both people, not one person’s endless flexibility.5. You minimize hurt to protect someone else’s imageWhen someone crosses a line, you may quickly explain it away: they were stressed, they meant well, or they have had a difficult year. Context can create compassion, but it does not erase the impact on you.Try holding both truths at once: their behavior may be understandable, and it still hurt. Naming the impact helps you decide what repair or boundary is needed. You do not have to turn someone into a villain before taking your own pain seriously.6. You confuse being needed with being valuedBeing the reliable fixer can create a powerful sense of belonging. People call when they need advice, money, practical help or emotional support—but may show little curiosity about your inner life.Notice what remains when you stop solving problems. Do people still reach out, listen and make room for you? Experiment with offering less immediate rescue and more honest presence. A relationship should not depend entirely on your usefulness. You deserve connection that survives when you have nothing to provide.7. You hide exhaustion until it becomes withdrawalIf rest feels selfish, you may keep participating until your patience disappears. Then you cancel abruptly, stop replying or emotionally check out. Others see the withdrawal but miss the weeks of strain that preceded it.Communicate earlier, while you still have choices. Tell a friend, partner or colleague, “I’m reaching my limit, so I need to scale back.” Early honesty is usually kinder than silent overextension. Rest taken before collapse protects both your well-being and your relationships.8. You accept apologies that change nothing afterwardAn apology can bring immediate relief, especially when conflict makes you anxious. But if the same boundary is repeatedly ignored, accepting the words without addressing the pattern may restore peace only temporarily.Look beyond the emotional moment and ask what will be different next time. You might say, “I appreciate the apology, but I need us to change how this happens.” Repair is not punishment; it is evidence that the harm mattered. Words soothe, while changed behavior rebuilds trust.9. You feel guilty whenever you choose yourselfGuilt does not always mean you have done something wrong. Sometimes it appears because you broke an old expectation: being constantly available, agreeable or easy to accommodate. The feeling can be real without being a reliable verdict. Before reversing your decision, ask whether you acted unfairly or merely disappointed someone. If you were respectful, let the discomfort pass without treating it as an emergency. Choosing yourself occasionally is not rejection. It is how you remain present without disappearing inside your relationships.

Khloé Kardashian’s Four-Year Celibacy Milestone Prompts Doctor to Debunk Myths New

Khloé Kardashian’s Four-Year Celibacy Milestone Prompts Doctor to Debunk Myths

Published 13:45 6 Oct 2026 GMT+1Khloé spoke out on her celibacy journey during a teaser clip for the upcoming season of The KardashiansA women’s health doctor has explained exactly what happens when you abstain from sex for a long time, after Khloé Kardashian opened up on reaching four years of celibacy. The 42-year-old reality TV star, who has been open about her abstinence journey, commented on the milestone in the trailer for the upcoming season of The Kardashians. In a teaser clip of the show, which is due to premiere on 8 October on Hulu, she announced: “I’m single, I might be ready to mingle.”She then admitted that last December, when the show was filmed, she had abstained from sex from four years, to which her sister Kendall joked: “Never say never, right!”AdvertKhloé was last romantically linked with Tristan Thompson, with whom she shares her two children, True, eight, and Tatum, four, and hasn’t been shy about her decision to keep romance out of the bedroom since. It comes at a time when celibacy is growing in popularity and visibility, with other big-name celebrities such as Sharon Stone speaking out about their experiences.Last December, Khloé marked four years of celibacy (Instagram/@khloekardashian)Tyla spoke with intimate health, menopause, hormone health, and women's wellness issues expert, Dr Shirin Lakhani, who delved into how a decision like this could affect your body and dispelled the common myths we’ve been led to believe. She explained: “The body should not undergo any particular changes simply because someone hasn't had sex for a certain amount of time. There may be some changes to your hormones, such as a reduction in oxytocin and endorphins as well as a dip in dopamine levels.“This can affect your mood and motivation, however extended celibacy does not permanently alter long-term hormone production.“For some women, celibacy can actually have a positive effect with fewer concerns around sexually transmitted infections or UTIs, pregnancy or contraception.”What are the myths around celibacy?Dr Lakhani explained that one of the biggest myths is that our vagina changes shape or ‘tightness’ depending on how much sex you have, which is completely untrue. The expert told Tyla: “Sex, or a lack of sex, does not cause permanent changes to the size or shape of the vagina or labia.“The vagina is highly elastic and returns to its usual shape after intercourse. Similarly, the length and appearance of the labia are determined by genetics and natural anatomical variation, not sexual activity.”She added: “Genetics play a significant role in determining the natural size and shape of the labia, and there is a wide range of normal variation.”Another popular myth is that your hormones become ‘messed up’ somehow when you’re not having regular sex, which Dr Lakhani says is ‘absolutely not the case and is quite damaging to make people believe that they need sex for their hormones to function correctly’.She outlined: “Sexual activity can influence things such as arousal, stress and mood, but there isn't a medically defined amount of sex that a woman needs to maintain hormonal or physical health.”It's not the first time the reality TV star has spoken out about celibacy (Hulu/The Kardashians/Instagram)Are there any other ways celibacy affects your health? For post-menopausal women who lack oestrogen, the women’s health expert explains that less sexual stimulation may cause faster thinning, drying, and loss of elasticity in vaginal walls. She told Tyla: “Pelvic floor stimulation through sex can also help to strengthen the muscles, and without it could possibly affect the strength of your pelvic floor.‘Some women experience increased UTIs, thrush or BV when sexually active, so being celibate may have a positive effect on decreased reactivity.”Shr urged: “However, I would note that being celibate is a personal decision and any changes to the body or how you feel is completely individual to each person.“Not having sex does not switch off oestrogen, progesterone or testosterone production, or cause menopause. The short-lived hormonal responses associated with sexual activity are different from your underlying reproductive hormone level.”Desire and wellbeing can vary, and while some women feel less interested in sex during a break; others do not, this isn’t the case for everyhone.Dr Lakhani concluded: “ Whether celibacy feels comfortable or distressing matters more than any prescribed frequency of sex. There is no medically “normal” amount.“Pain, persistent dryness or bleeding should be assessed rather than simply attributed to celibacy. There is no need to push through painful sex.”Featured Image Credit: Instagram/@khloekardashianTopics: Women's Health, Khloe Kardashian, The Kardashians, Sex and Relationships, Reality TV, Celebrity

Why Democratic Support Just Hit Its Highest Level Since 2009 New

Why Democratic Support Just Hit Its Highest Level Since 2009

More Americans are identifying as Democratic than at any time since the first years of the Obama administration, less than a month before the midterm elections. The latest quarterly poll from Gallup shows 50 percent of Americans asked either said they were a Democrat or leaned that way, compared to 39 percent for the Republican Party. The share of those on the left has been steadily rising since the end of 2024, while the number of those saying they were Republican or Republican-leaning has fallen. The result for the Democratic Party is potentially surprising, with the party having struggled to win voters over in other national polling in recent months, and it remains to be seen if this overall sentiment is transferred to results in November."The party lean category is a good indicator of vote intentions," Stephen Ansolabehere, professor of government at Harvard University, told Newsweek on Monday. "Generally, when it’s a good year for a party the proportion of people who lean in the direction of the eventual winner of the election goes up in October and November. Come January or February that category returns to its original levels."A Democratic National Committee spokesperson said in a statement to Newsweek, “All across the country, Americans are rejecting Trump and Republicans’ toxic agenda of sky high prices, rampant corruption, and endless chaos. Heading into the election, Democrats are confident, but not complacent. We are all gas, no brakes to reach every voter, expand the map, and win up and down the ballot this November.” Meanwhile, Republican National Press Secretary Natalie Baldassarre told Newsweek: “National polls always underestimate support for Republicans and liberal rags like Newsweek always take the bait. Republicans are united in exposing the far-left's extreme agenda and will leave it all on the table to defy history in November." Democratic Support Reached Obama-Era LevelParty affiliation, like politics more widely, had been ever-changing, but with the two parties still holding most of the power in U.S. Congress, where Americans fall even if they consider themselves independent matters. In the last quarter of 2024, in the wake of the presidential election that saw President Donald Trump reelected to the White House, Republicans led the Gallup polling with 47 percent compared to 43 percent identifying as Democratic. The lead did not last very long, with the parties being tied the next quarter.More Americans have been identifying as Democratic or leaning that way in the months since, leading up to the 50 percent figure seen in Monday's poll. The last time the Democratic side of the poll was as high was in 2009, during Obama's first term in the White House. The numbers do become more nuanced when including independents, who currently sit at 45 percent, but Democrats sit at 5 points higher than Republicans, at 30 percent, in the latest survey.Gallup carries out the survey every quarter, with the latest conducted among a random sample of 3,000 U.S. adults age 18 and older, living across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., with a +2 percent margin of error. While the poll is a likely morale boost for the Democratic National Committee, history can offer a warning to the party, with polls that underestimated Republicans in key states leading to surprise GOP victories.A long-running core issue is transferring those supporters into actual voters at the ballot box. Those with a favorable view of the Democratic Party still may not want to vote for a particular candidate covering their district or state, and that could mean the difference between the Democrats taking control of Congress or the GOP maintaining its grip. Why Are More Americans Identifying as Democrats? As Ansolabehere said, the shift may indicate a Democratic win next month, and part of the reason for that could be not that Americans are more supportive of Democrats, but rather increasingly unhappy with Trump and the GOP-controlled legislature. The cost of living has become a key issue for voters this year—as it was when the Democrats last saw their Gallup numbers peak in 2009 at the height of the recession. At the time, there was hope that then-President Barack Obama was working on fixing the issues his predecessor was seen as having played a part in causing, and the newly elected president was still riding a wave of popularity that led to his 2008 election win.Recent polling has shown Trump's disapproval rating on the economy has equaled President George W. Bush's handling of economy at the end of his term, despite the current president's efforts to downplay rising gas and grocery prices."I think it is yet another datapoint that the public has soured on Republicans and President Trump. It is consistent with what we have seen in other trends such as presidential approval, special election results, and primary turnout," Josh Clinton, professor who covers public opinion at Vanderbilt University, told Newsweek. "Even though views of the Democratic Party have not much improved according to many polls since 2024, the fact that people are increasingly likely to prefer Democrats over Republicans shows just how toxic the Republican brand has become to formerly independent and swing voters."The fact that it has reached a level similar to where it was in 2009 is telling given that both times were instances in which the public seemingly blamed Republicans for failing to deal with what voters thought was an economy that was not working for them."Voters cast their ballots inside the Arlington County Courthouse on September 18 in Arlington, Virginia. | Tom Brenner/Getty ImagesWhat This Means for the MidtermsGallup's findings are not an isolated indicator. Democrats also hold a substantial lead when Americans are asked which party they would support for Congress, strengthening the argument the party is entering the final month of the midterms campaign with a favorable national image.Analysts and pollsters remain cautious about making any definitive predictions about the results in a month's time, but election simulations, including from RacetotheWH, which looks at voting patterns, polling and other indicators, has given Democrats an 87 percent chance of winning the House. The Senate remained more competitive, at 73 percent. At the same point before the 2018 midterms, when Democrats gained 41 House seats and took control of the chamber, the party led the generic ballot average by 7.2 points, compared to 8.3 points this year, per RealClearPolling.A number of races have shifted toward the Democrats in recent weeks, with early voting underway—something Trump has already claimed is corrupt as he heads on a tour of key GOP seats to campaign, despite not being on the ballot himself.
