Norway Mourns King Harald V: The Legacy of a Beloved Monarch

Norway’s King Harald V died on Friday, August 28. He was 89. The Norwegian monarch died at 6:35 a.m. local time at the Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet, the royal court said. Harald had been hospitalized on August 17 with a bacterial blood infection. His death comes just one day after the palace said that “His Majesty the King’s health has deteriorated” and “His Majesty the King’s health condition is very serious.” Harald is survived by his wife, Queen Sonja, 89, daughter Princess Märtha Louise, 54, and son Crown Prince Haakon, 53, who was automatically crowned king upon Harald’s death. Harald ruled for 35 years after succeeding his father, King Olav V, in 1991. “It is with the most profound sadness that my wife and I have learned of the death of my dear cousin, King Harald V of Norway,” the U.K.’s King Charles III said in a statement on Friday. The British monarch continued, “For 35 years, King Harald served his people with unwavering dedication, guiding Norway through times of great change with warmth and humility. As Norway mourns the loss of so towering a figure, my whole family join in remembering a much-loved kinsman and friend whose kindness, compassion and deep sense of duty echoed from across the sea and across the decades.” “The United Kingdom and Norway share particularly close historical and family ties, with Britain one of the first countries to recognize Norwegian independence and establish diplomatic relations in 1905,” Charles said. “These special bonds were even further strengthened during the dreadful trials of the Second World War and helped to bind our two countries together.” “Queen [Camilla] and I extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Queen Sonja and all her family, as Britain shares in Norway's grief at this time of such heartbreaking loss,” he concluded. A federal judge on Thursday blocked the ​US Postal Service from implementing core parts of a new rule it adopted at President Donald Trump’s direction that would ‌tighten mail-in voting requirements ahead of the November congressional elections.US District Judge Indira Talwani in Boston issued a temporary restraining order, opens new tab at the behest of Democratic-led states and voting rights groups after the US Supreme Court on Monday issued a ruling that led to the lifting of earlier injunctions blocking Trump’s plans to restrict mail-in voting.That decision led to ​a frantic effort by dozens of Democratic state attorneys general and voting rights groups including the League of Women Voters to renew ​their legal fight and secure an order that would prevent the USPS from enforcing a rule that was allowed ⁠to take effect on Wednesday.US District Judge Indira Talwani blocked a USPS rule backed by Donald Trump that would have restricted mail-in voting ahead of the election. United States CourtsIn Thursday’s ruling, Talwani said the rule risked preventing citizens from casting ballots by mail unless states secure the Postal ​Service’s sign-off on the envelopes used for that purpose and upload information on each voter into an electronic portal run by the agency.The judge said ​the agency had presented no evidence regarding fraudulent mail-in voting that would necessitate such a rule, which she said likely was unlawful and adopted in violation of the US Constitution, which gives states the authority to administer elections.“USPS’s interest in correcting an unsubstantiated problem through likely unconstitutional means is dwarfed by the overwhelming risk of pervasive ​disenfranchisement of citizens who need access to mail ballots in order to vote,” she wrote.The restraining order Talwani issued will remain in place for 14 ​days while she considers whether to issue a longer-term preliminary injunction blocking the rule. Según el periodista, la prioridad inicial de las autoridades fue resguardar la integridad física de los elementos a toda costa. "Estos policías venían en el avión, estuvieron durante la presentación de El Chapo con pasamontañas y después de eso fueron condecorados en una ceremonia secreta para mantener oculta su identidad y luego los mandaron fuera del país a cubrir comisiones para protegerlos como agregados en embajadas", explicó De Mauleón sobre las medidas adoptadas en aquel momento. De acuerdo con las investigaciones de De Mauleón, aunque sus nombres se mantienen todavía bajo reserva por motivos de seguridad, la realidad operativa a la que volvieron dista mucho de la protección diplomática de la que gozaban en años anteriores. "Estuvieron en otros lugares hasta que termina el sexenio, llega López Obrador, desaparece la Policía Federal y los dos regresan. Se sabe que regresan, su identidad sigue protegida, pero logré saber que pues andan algunos de ellos penando, rogándole a Dios, patrullando y haciendo otras comisiones, rogándole a Dios que no se sepa que ellos fueron los que detuvieron al Chapo", concluyó el periodista.
