Social Security Email Praising Trump Raises Hatch Act Violation Concerns New

Social Security Email Praising Trump Raises Hatch Act Violation Concerns

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is facing scrutiny after sending a mass email praising President Donald Trump just days before the midterm elections. On Friday and Saturday, Americans with online Social Security accounts received emails in which Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano explicitly credited Trump with improving the agency. "Under President Donald J. Trump, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is transforming into a model of excellence, one that meets and exceeds customer expectations for fast, accurate, and secure service," Bisignano said in the email.Read More on PoliticsLegal experts are questioning whether the message crossed federal restrictions on political activity by government employees. The email’s political praise of Trump as well as its proximity to the election have raised questions regarding a potential violation of the Hatch Act, a federal law restricting certain partisan political activity by executive branch employees.Newsweek reached out to the SSA for comment via email. Why It MattersThe SSA oversees benefits relied upon by tens of millions of retirees, people with disabilities and their families. The email controversy comes immediately before voters head to the polls in consequential midterm elections and follows earlier criticism from Democratic members of Congress over SSA emails lauding Trump. The Hatch Act, enacted in 1939, restricts federal employees from engaging in certain political activities in their official capacity and is intended to prevent government authority and resources from being used for partisan purposes.Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank Bisignano speaks during a Columbus Day event in the East Room of the White House on October 9 in Was...The October 30 and 31 email was sent under Bisignano's name and praised the agency's performance specifically "under President Donald J. Trump," describing SSA as "transforming into a model of excellence." Bisignano is simultaneously serving as SSA commissioner and chief executive of the IRS. A separate IRS email also praised Trump's economic policies."Last year, President Donald J. Trump signed into law the Working Families Tax Cuts, landmark legislation that ushered in a new era of tax relief and prevented the largest tax increase in American history from taking effect," Bisignano wrote in that message. "Hardworking Americans like you are keeping more of what they earn because of President Trump's historic tax cuts." The IRS email included a disclaimer saying that the agency "does not generally send e-mails to taxpayers" and that the message was "for informational purposes and does not constitute a communication about a taxpayer's specific situation." Could the Email Violate the Hatch Act?Several legal experts have raised precisely that question, although there has been no official ruling that Bisignano or SSA violated the law over this message.Kathleen Clark, law professor at Washington University in St. Louis, told The New York Times that the emails appeared to function as "propaganda" rather than public-service announcements. Richard W. Painter, University of Minnesota law professor who previously served as White House ethics lawyer under President George W. Bush, was more explicit about the timing."They're doing it just before the election to persuade people that President Trump is doing a good job," Painter told the Times, adding that he regarded the messages as inappropriate. The Hatch Act prohibits covered federal employees from using their official authority or influence for the purpose of interfering with or affecting an election. Violations can result in disciplinary sanctions, although whether a particular communication violates the statute depends on the circumstances. At least nine of Trump's 15 Cabinet secretaries had nevertheless faced formal accusations of Hatch Act violations in recent months, according to Time. The latest controversy follows a similar dispute earlier this year. In July, Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Ron Wyden of Oregon, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island challenged Bisignano over another SSA email praising Trump. That email was sent July 2 and referenced Trump six times, according to the senators. They accused SSA of spreading misleading information about Trump's tax law while using an official government communication channel to promote the president."This was an unusual communication that served no legitimate purpose: rather than receiving necessary information about benefits or a critical communication from the SSA, recipients received a partisan, politicized message — containing multiple misleading statements — that heaped praise on President Trump," the senators wrote at the time. The senators also accused Bisignano of "abusing the millions of email addresses" obtained through my Social Security accounts or other means and said the communications threatened the agency's integrity. What Happens NextThe most significant unanswered question is whether the latest message will result in a formal Hatch Act complaint or investigation.Violations of the Hatch Act can carry a range of disciplinary consequences from a reprimand, suspension, demotion or even dismissal of an official.Newsweek’s reporters and editors used Martyn, our AI assistant, to produce this story. Costa Rica Unveils $35 Million Mega-Prison to Combat Organized Crime Surge

Updated 22:13 2 Nov 2026 GMTPublished 14:08 2 Nov 2026 GMTThe prison has opened and has welcomed its first inmatesA new mega-prison inspired by El Salvador's much discussed 'most dangerous jail' has opened in Costa Rica. The Center for High Containment of Organized Crime (CACCO) has been touted as a symbol of President Laura Fernández’s commitment to a new ‘tough on crime’ policy in the Central American country. The $35 million new building has 5,100-beds and took nine-months to build. It recently welcomed its first 123 inmates, with the prison being used to help ease overcrowding in existing prisons across Costa Rica.AdvertJustice Minister Gabriel Aguilar ‌said: “Costa Rica is writing a new chapter in its penitentiary history.“CACCO is a monument to national security, a forceful response to organized crime, and a guarantee that the state will exercise its authority without hesitation.”The jail has cost a whopping $35 million (Arnoldo Robert/Getty Images)Fernández put some of Costa Rica's most dangerous criminals on notice during the opening of the prison, as he warned they could be transferred to CACCO.While Costa Rica is largely regarded as one of the safest Latin American countries, it has seen a sharp rise in criminal activity linked to drug trafficking and organized crime in recent years. The country had a record number of homicides in 2023, though officials in Costa Rica say such have been stablished in recent times.Roughly 70 percent of those deaths can be attributed to rival criminal groups fighting over drug markets, according to the Judicial Investigation Agency.Costa Rica's newest prison is modelled on El Salvador's Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT), which has been dubbed ‘the worst prison on Earth’.Costa Rica's mega-prison has opened (Arnoldo Robert/Getty Images)The mega-jail spans 410 acres and can house up to 40,000 inmates, making it one of the largest in the world by prisoner capacity. However, conditions in the prison have long been discussed, with AFP previously reporting that inmates must stay with 65 to 70 others in their cells for up to 23-and-a-half hours a day.The prison featured in a Channel 5 documentary in the UK earlier this year, with host Richard Madeley visiting the infamous jail.Belarmino García, the prison's director, discussed the living conditions for inmates, which include the lights being kept on 24/7."It's simply part of the protocol," García said told the documentary program."I need to be able to see what they're doing."The documentary revealed there is even an 'electronic bubble' surrounding the prison, meaning any electronic device smuggled into the jail would not work.Featured Image Credit: Arnoldo Robert/Getty ImagesTopics: Crime, World News

Comic Con Saturday, when he was asked about his Halloween plans that night. Cage said he had to adjust due to his current living situation.“I’m currently a little bit homeless, he said. “Something happened to my house in Malibu so I’m just sort of living in hotels so I don’t have normal trick or treaters I would like to enjoy tonight.”Nicolas Cage said he was homeless during his appearance at L.A. Comic Con Saturday. BOLD/INSTARimagesThe actor shared the news when he was asked how he would be spending Halloween, and he said he was currently “sort of living in hotels.” Getty ImagesBut he shared that he would be taking his 4-year-old daughter, August, out trick or treating in Santa Monica, California, and that he had plans to watch director Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic, “The Shining,” after putting her to bed.Cage’s $10.5 million beachfront property sustained catastrophic damage due to heavy rain and severe coastal erosion, sinking into the ground. Photos taken on Sept. 8 show a deep hole where the driveway of the home used to be.Leading up to the enclosed garage, asphalt and concrete appeared to have cracked open and fallen in, along with various items including a construction site port-a-potty and what appeared to be fragmented panels from a privacy fence. The “National Treasure” star’s neighbors also had to be evacuated from their homes due to the huge sinkhole that swallowed his driveway. The actor noted that “something happened to my house in Malibu,” but didn’t elaborate further. Learjet Crash in Florida May Have Been Caused by 'Coffin Corner' Phenomenon New

Learjet Crash in Florida May Have Been Caused by 'Coffin Corner' Phenomenon

Published 21:56 2 Nov 2026 GMTInvestigators have said that the weather conditions are part of the focus of their investigationExperts have shared their thoughts after investigators announced that weather conditions are part of the focus in the investigation of the Florida plane crash that left nine people dead. The Learjet 60 private plunged from the sky and crashed into the ground near West Palm Beach on Sunday (1 November) at around 12.50pm local time. All nine people on board, which included two crew and seven passengers, died in the incident. Earlier this evening, Palm Beach Post reported that businessman Adam Robinson, his wife Helen, their two children, two of their friends and a nanny were the passengers on board the plane.AdvertTwenty-year-old co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras has also been identified as one of the victims. Her step-dad told the New York Post that about 10 minutes before the fatal crash, she texted her boyfriend to say: “I’ve got turbulence, I’ve got ice.” Co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras has also been identified by her family (Threads/@itsnatfilg)During a press conference earlier today (2 November), NTSB Member Tom Chapman was asked about 'ice and turbulence' and said that was 'certainly a factor' of their investigations.According to the Palm Beach Post, several experts who have reviewed flight data and radar say the plane may have flown into a thunderstorm before the crash. Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci told the outlet, the storm’s clouds had climbed 15,000 feet in 20 minutes and reached 48,300 feet tall by the time of the crash. (Mehmet Yaren Bozgun/Anadolu via Getty Images)Former pilot Martin Varsavsky has also shared his thoughts on the incident, suggesting that it could have been caused by a dangerous ‘coffin corner’ phenomenon while attempting to climb above two storm systems, known as ‘cells’. Coffin corner is a name given in aviation when a plane’s minimum safe speed and maximum safe speed narrow into a very small range at high altitude, which makes flying extremely dangerous. If the plane goes too fast or too slow it can stall and the pilot will lose control of the aircraft. The aftermath of the crash (Saul Martinez/Getty Images)In a post on X, Varsavsky said: “The radars clearly showed those cells; in light jets, the rule is to deviate with a good margin, not to fly through them—this could be an error by the woman who was piloting.“What storms do by changing the outside temperature is that airplanes can no longer stay aloft at the same speed.“It’s called the coffin corner. Or they become very difficult to keep under control.”Pilot Justin Crabbe, commercial pilot CEO at Jettly, also highlighted that ice on the wings of a plane ‘can significantly affect how an aircraft flies and how turbulence can also impact an aircraft'.He told LADbible that it 'changes the shape of the wings, reduces lift, increases drag and can make the aircraft much more difficult to control', and could possibly have made a turbulent situation worse.Featured Image Credit: Saul Martinez/Getty ImagesTopics: US News

Ravanelli Urges More Playing Time for Zhegrova at Juventus New

Ravanelli Urges More Playing Time for Zhegrova at Juventus

Foto: Amir Hamzagić/Nova.rs/X/Djordje Miketic autor: 02. nov. Affordable Pill Naltrexone Offers Hope for Millions with Alcohol Use Disorder

Thirst-zepatide?A cheap pill is being billed as the “Ozempic of alcohol” for its ability to reduce appetites for booze, the way GLP-1 drugs curb food cravings.Naltrexone — which costs about $1.60 a pill when purchased in bulk — decreases the urge for alcohol by blocking opioid receptors in the brain, reducing the dopamine-reward effect that people get from drinking.Essentially, alcohol no longer has the same satisfying feeling, which helps diminish the desire for it.Nearly 28 million Americans struggle with alcohol use disorder. auremar – stock.adobe.comNaltrexone has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat alcohol use disorder since 1994 and opiate dependence since 1984.Nearly 28 million Americans struggle with alcohol use disorder. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 17% of American adults binge drink, with the habit more common among men. Not only does drinking heavily take a toll on boozers’ wallets, but it can also lead to negative health consequences and tragedies.Research shows that 80% of users who took naltrexone, a prescription-only med, an hour before drinking drastically reduced or eliminated their alcohol intake altogether.Besides the pill, Oar Health sells naltrexone as a mint under the brand name Clutch. The drug also comes in a once-a-month injection.Naltrexone has been approved by the FDA to treat alcohol use disorder since 1994 and opiate dependence since 1984. Vedran – stock.adobe.comNausea and headaches are reported side effects of naltrexone, but experts say the nausea subsides as participants get used to the treatment. This sets naltrexone apart from acamprosate, which is also approved to treat alcohol use disorder, but necessitates monitoring from a health care professional since potential side effects include suicidal thoughts and depression. And unlike disulfiram — another drug approved to treat alcohol use disorder, which causes unpleasant, life-threatening side effects if taken alongside alcohol — naltrexone doesn’t require strict alcohol abstinence. For many, naltrexone has been nothing short of a game-changer.“The first time I took naltrexone, I remember not just wanting to impulsively turn to alcohol. It was gone. There wasn’t even a question of whether or not I needed it,” said military veteran and podcast host Jesse Carrajat.“For the first time in my life, when things got hard, I wasn’t turning to alcohol.”While some use naltrexone to get sober, others use it to moderate their drinking. Naltrexone saved me,” said one user. “Worked instantly for me 4 months alcohol free,” said another. Meanwhile, a Reddit user who struggled with alcohol since his teen years and gradually saw his dependence affect his quality of life said that his first dose of naltrexone resulted in an immediate reframe of his drinking habits.“The first time I took it, I still drank, arguably quite a lot, but I didn’t spiral. I didn’t lose control,” he said. “I left the party at a decent time, 1 a.m., because I was tired. I woke up the next morning feeling surprisingly fresh. Not wired, not anxious — just clear. That alone felt like a miracle.”The following year, the man only took naltrexone before big events and risky situations, but by 2025, he committed to taking the pill every time he drank.“Now? I barely think about drinking. The Friday craving is gone,” he declared. “The urge to open a bottle alone? Gone. I can have a beer at a bar with friends and stop after one or two. And if I don’t drink, I don’t feel deprived, I just feel normal.”

Kosovo Supports Defense Teams in Special Court Strategy, Says Haxhiu New

Kosovo Supports Defense Teams in Special Court Strategy, Says Haxhiu

Learjet Plummets 35,000 Feet in 76 Seconds Before Fatal Florida Crash

Published 17:19 2 Nov 2026 GMTAll nine people on board the private jet died as witnesses on the ground in South Florida said 'everything was on fire'A reconstruction of the private jet which crashed into a South Florida neighbourhood shows what might have happened in ‘the last three minutes’. All nine people on board the Learjet 60 aircraft from Texas died, as videos taken by passers-by show the terrifying moment the Bahamas-bound aircraft plunged 35,000 feet to the ground on Sunday afternoon (1 November). Flight analysis indicated that the plane may have encountered severe weather and reported icing just before it plummeted into a roadway in Palm Beach County.Air traffic control audio recorded moments before the crash, appears to show someone in the cockpit reporting ‘moderate turbulence’ and that the crew was ‘managing the ice’.AdvertAn account on X (@elteslaengineer) has since made a reconstruction to show what might have happened just minutes before the crash. A 4D reconstruction shows what might have happened in the minutes prior to the crash (X/@elteslaengineer)“The Learjet 60 that crashed in Palm Beach County today went from 35,000 ft to the ground in 76 seconds,” the user wrote. “I rebuilt the last 3 minutes in 4D from ADS-B, ATC audio, a NEXRAD analysis and dashcam video, then ran the engineering. Here's what the data says, and what it doesn't.”What might have gone wrong?Justin Crabbe, the CEO of private aviation platforms Jettly and BlackJet, tells LADbible that ‘based on the pilot's references to icing and turbulence, it's possible the aircraft was encountering weather conditions that were affecting its performance and controllability’. “Ice accumulation can reduce lift, increase drag and raise the aircraft's stall speed. If the aircraft was struggling to maintain airspeed or altitude, the situation could have deteriorated very quickly,” he suggests. “However, without the complete cockpit audio, flight data and other evidence, it's difficult to say exactly what happened or whether icing was ultimately responsible.”Why is there a lack of debris left at the crash site?(Saul Martinez/Getty Images)Crabbe notes that ‘the amount of visible debris depends heavily on the aircraft's speed, angle of impact, the surface it strikes and whether there was a post-impact fire’.“A high-energy impact like that can break an aircraft into very small pieces, with much of the wreckage concentrated around the impact point rather than scattered over a large area,” he explains. “Some debris may also be buried beneath the surface or removed by emergency crews. A relatively small debris field doesn't necessarily mean anything unusual happened before impact.”What have the authorities said?(Mehmet Yaren Bozgun/Anadolu via Getty Images)20-year-old co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras has been identified as one of the nine who died. In a statement shared with LADbible, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said: “A Learjet 60 crashed in a residential area near Cresthaven, Florida, around 12:50 p.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 1. Nine people were on board.“The aircraft departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.“The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB is in charge of the investigation and will provide all updates.”Crabbe believes that ‘investigators will be working to reconstruct the aircraft's final flight path, including its altitude, airspeed, descent rate and any unusual changes in direction or attitude’. “They'll examine available cockpit recordings, air traffic control communications, radar and ADS-B data, along with weather reports and any evidence of icing in the area. They'll also look at the aircraft's maintenance history, anti-icing equipment, engine performance and the physical wreckage to determine whether there were any mechanical issues,” he adds.
