UK Prime Minister Urges Citizens to Prepare for Emergencies with Three-Day Supply Kit

Published 18:58 23 Oct 2026 GMT+1Getting three days worth of food or water isn't a bad ideaThe prime minister has recommended that Brits make sure they're stocked up on important items like tins of food and bottles of water as he warned that 'unexpected events seem to be becoming more and more common'.Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about the issues facing the UK such as challenging weather and online disruptions which could knock people's lives and routines off kilter, Andy Burnham said it was important to have reserves of essentials. He said: "You need to have a clear head when it comes to a challenging situation. So some tins of food, some bottled water, I think maybe."He also referred to Housing Secretary Angela Rayner's joke that her own emergency kit would include a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, saying he was 'not sure that that’s the top of the list in terms of the advice' but reckoned people should be 'allowed a glass or two' to get through tough times.AdvertThe prime minister said the country needed to be more resilient when the unexpected happens, and that involved having an emergency stash.A lot of the things you need are likely to be in your cupboards (Getty Stock Photo)All the items Brits are recommended to have a stockpile ofThe government's 'be ready' checklist involves having enough supplies to keep going for three days without water or power, and if you're putting it together the chances are you've likely got plenty of the things you need already in your cupboards.Bottled water for three days, three litres per person per day for drinking. Extra water for cooking and washing. Non-perishable food for three days such as tinned meat, fish or vegetables, dried fruit and nuts. Hand sanitiser, wet wipes and bathroom products.Torch and spare batteries.Blankets, sleeping bags and warm clothing.FM radio (battery / wind up).A list of frequencies of any national or local radio stations you use for news.

Additionally, she also handled press for Kimberly Guilfoyle’s text message scandal. So I could be a college dropout and do the same thing? Why, ’cause I have a brain, and you don’t?” she ranted after her car had been towed. “Maybe if I was missing some teeth, they would hire me, huh? … ‘Cause I’m on television, and you’re in a f–king trailer, honey.” McHenry did not get back to us by deadline. UK Conscription: Young Men and Women Among First to Serve if Introduced New

UK Conscription: Young Men and Women Among First to Serve if Introduced

Updated 19:50 19 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 07:31 12 Jan 2026 GMTCertain groups are more likely to be called upon for conscription to help the UK military if neededThe UK government’s conscription service guidelines have resurfaced again in light of an eerie warning to the public made by General Sir Roly Walker. Just last week, the general public were told they had a role to play if the UK were to get involved with war. The army Chief of the General staff shared his message with 700 soldiers from the Catterick Garrison, and via the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS), he let his expectations for the country be known. “You didn't know this, but our nation is going to need you," he said. AdvertHe explained that people in the UK will need to ‘consent to sacrifices to prioritise defence and security’. “And then they are going to ask those citizens, for whom we are not necessarily at the front of their mind, that they too need to play a part in the defence and security of this country,” he added, and explained they’ll need to ‘take the fight to the enemy.’ General Sir Roly Walker issued a warning (Photo by Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty Images)While half of the public say they would not go to war for the UK, according to a new poll, ChatGPT predicted the possibility of a large-scale global war. The job groups who are most likely to be safe from the process have previously been revealed, as bakers, farmers, doctors, nurses and engineers will likely be exempt due to their connections to the food and healthcare industries. It hasn't been confirmed if it will be formally introduced in the UK, though, with a turbulent start to 2026, you wouldn't be blamed for being cautious.Conscription guidelines are being explained (Getty Stock Images)What is conscription? Conscription is introduced when a military needs people to fight in a war, but there aren't enough volunteers for the armed forces, meaning that you'll legally have to fight if you are able to.First introduced in the lead-up to World War II, Sir Richard Knighton, Chief of the Defence Staff, recently said he 'cannot see conscription returning in the short term'.He added that there were 'no plans' to bring it in in the UK, but warned that 'the situation in the world may deteriorate very significantly'.Meanwhile, Prime Minister Keir Starmer told the News Agents podcast last year that such a proposal has ‘never crossed my lips’.Can you refuse? (Getty Stock Images)What happens if you refuse conscription? You may consider refusing conscription, a decision which would have got you a lot of grief in World War II, though the government often found work in farming, hospital work, civil defence or forestry for these individuals, or non-combat military roles. If they chose to refuse all war-related work, they would be thrown in prison. But as Starmer signed a deal to deploy British troops in Ukraine in the event of a peace deal with Russia, it isn't clear how far we are from another global conflict.Which groups are most likely to serve first?Young, fit menHistory points towards this group being drafted first, specifically those in the 18 to 25 age bracket. They are prioritised as troops as they can be trained quickly and have the physical capability to undergo a long-term conflict. We have to rewind the clock to early 1939 for the UK government's precedent for this, as they introduced limited conscription for those aged 21 to 22.Though when the war was declared, the group was expanded to those between 18-41.Who will serve first? (Getty Stock Images)Single people with no childrenFamily status has long been a huge factor in figuring out who's sent to fight for the nation, with the government even introducing a phased approach to conscription during the Second World War.They would draft single people without children first to avoid disrupting families.WomenThis would be different to historical precedent, as women are more likely than ever to face conscription in any future conflicts.Women between the ages of 20 and 30 were called up for roles related to WWII, including nursing, munitions, and auxiliary positionsThe line between auxiliary and combat roles has disappeared in the modern age, as a 2024 YouGov poll even found that 72% of Brits support women fighting on the frontlines. What would happen? (Getty Stock Images)Ex-soldiers and reservistsFormer military personnel are likely to be drafted as they have already been trained to fight for the nation.Older peopleFinally, older people would be drafted if the war were to continue for longer periods of time.People aged up to 51 were conscripted in the closing stages of WWII, while those aged 52-60 had to serve in the civil defence.Featured Image Credit: Getty Stock ImageTopics: UK News, Keir Starmer, Army, World News

An attorney representing the trustee overseeing Nick Reiner’s trust is asking a judge to release $300 so he can purchase basic items behind bars while awaiting trial for the murders of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner.During a hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday, Lauriann Wright, who represents successor trustee Jodi Pais Montgomery, requested that the relatively small amount be deposited into Nick’s jail commissary account.Wright described the request as a “quality of life issue,” stressing that the $300 was a small amount compared to the much larger sum at the center of the ongoing legal battle. An attorney representing the trustee overseeing Nick Reiner’s trust is asking a judge to release $300 so he can purchase basic items while behind bars. (Pictured: Reiner in February 2026)The request comes as the 33-year-old continues fighting for access to approximately $1.6 million held in the Nick Reiner Children’s Trust which was established by his late parents in 1993.As Page Six previously reported, Nick’s attorneys claimed in September that he had not received “even $5” from the trust to purchase basic necessities while incarcerated. His lawyers argues that he was entitled to receive half of the trust’s assets when he turned 30 in September 2023, more than two years before his parents’ death. Nick with his pubic defender Kimberly Greene in February. ReutersAccording to court filings, at least $558,000 was due to Nick — who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia — at the time, his attorneys claimed. However, Wright previously argues that California’s Slayer Statute prevents Nick from accessing the funds because he has been charged with murdering his parents.Per Justia Law, the statute prevents a “person who feloniously and intentionally kills the decedent” from gaining access to “property, interest, or benefit under a will of the decedent, or a trust created by or for the benefit of the decedent.”Wright also argued that releasing the funds before Nick’s criminal case is resolved could be “irreversible,” and that his share of the trust should instead go to his siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner.Nick’s attorneys have pushe back, arguing that the funds were owed to him years before his parents were killed and therefore should not be subject to the statute. The dispute has also affected Nick’s efforts to hire private criminal defense counsel. His former attorney, Alan Jackson, withdrew from the murder case in January, leaving Nick represented by Los Angeles county public defender Kimberly Greene. The larger dispute over the trust funds remains unresolved.Nick has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the December 2025 stabbing deaths of his parents at their Brentwood home.He remains behind bars without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted. A 90-year-old astrophysicist professor was violently shoved off a New York City subway by a callous stranger — leaving him with broken bones and needing a hip replacement.Dr. C.G. Wang is still recovering in the hospital weeks after he was hurled off a southbound F-train by a vile straphanger he politely asked to move so he could get off at the Lexington Avenue and East 53rd Street station.“I said I need to exit … here. I just said it like that,” Wang told ABC 7 of the simple request.“And he stepped aside. The door opened. I was pushed so hard I flew out of the train,” he recalled of the vicious attack that broke several of his bones.Dr. C.G. Wang needed a hip replacement after he was thrown off a subway in Midtown. ABC7“I landed on my hip first. Then my shoulder, next. Then my head, next. Boom, boom, boom.”Wang, who had even been to a hospital before in his life, was taken by EMS to NYU Langone Tisch Hospital in stable condition, cops confirmed as they appealed for help finding the cruel pusher.Wang was so badly injured he als needed a hip replacement, he said. The suspect, who fled the scene in an unknown direction, appeared in a black jacket and a black baseball cap in a surveillance photo published by the NYPD on Wednesday, three weeks after the attack. He appeared to be roughly 40 to 50 years old and of medium build.Police released a photo of the shoving suspect on Wednesday, three weeks after the attack. DCPI“Who does this?” the professor’s son, Juin Wang, asked. “You know, who, who, who would shove a 90-year-old, frail, visually impaired man?” Wang recalled the train being fairly empty when he asked the man to move around 1 p.m. on Oct. 6 so he could get off at the exact door he knew would open in front of the escalator after making the trip thousands of times before.Despite his age, Wang was still living independently and had been regularly commuting to an office to conduct research and write before the attack. The professor was shoved around 1 p.m. on Oct. 6 at the Lexington Avenue-53rd Street station. Super Typhoon Champi Halts Taiwan: Flights Canceled, Markets Shut Amid El Niño Fury

Updated 14:39 23 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 11:21 23 Oct 2026 GMT+1One person has died from being swept away by waves, while the storm has also injured 171 people and forced 1,000 others to evacuateTaiwan has been brought to a near standstill as Typhoon Champi, one of the most powerful storms in the Pacific this year, has devastated the island.Hundreds of flights in East Asia have been cancelled on Friday (23 October), due to wind gusts of 191km/h (119mph) with 90cm (35in) of rain forecasted to last until Saturday evening.Officials say one person has died from being swept away by waves, while the storm has also injured 171 people and forced 1,000 others to evacuate.Taiwan’s $5tn (£3.7tn) financial markets, schools and government offices have been forced to shut across almost the entire island, with a population of 23 million people.AdvertChampi, which reached super typhoon status earlier this week, recorded maximum sustained winds of 298km/h (185mph) at its peak, equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane.Sandbags and flood barriers have been placed outside buildings as Typhoon Champi approaches Taiwan (I-Hwa Cheng / AFP via Getty Images)It has been fuelled by a Super El Niño, which happens when normal, east-to-west trade winds weaken or reverse, causing warm water to pool along the Americas and disrupt global weather, often causing heavy rains in some regions and severe droughts in others. While there have been only a handful of these cases since 1950, the World Meteorological Organization said this El Niño is likely to strengthen over the rest of 2026, driving more extreme weather around much of the globe.“El Niño is the main driver,” said James Caron, director of meteorological operations for North America and Asia, at Atmospheric G2 told Bloomberg.“The biggest threat is extreme rain over northern and northeastern Taiwan.”Fishing boats are moored at a fishing harbour as Typhoon Champi approaches Taiwan (I-Hwa Cheng / AFP via Getty Images)“In late October the northeast monsoon is already in place, and a typhoon passing nearby pulls that flow into the island’s terrain,” he said, adding that it could potentially cause as much as 46cm (18in) over greater Taipei, risking catastrophic flash floods and landslides.CWA forecaster Liu Pei-teng told Reuters that landfall could not be ruled out if it ‘stalls, loops, or wobbles from side to side’.“The storm's wind radius is quite large, among the bigger ones in recent years," Liu said.“If the storm slows down, the strong winds will affect Taiwan for longer.”Lee Ming-chen, head of the port town of Suao noted that ‘when necessary, the military will come in to help people, including using amphibious vehicles for evacuations or disaster relief’.Hundreds of flights have been cancelled (Yasin Demirci/Anadolu via Getty Images)In Japan's southern Okinawa prefecture, approximately 8,400 households experienced power outages as the storm approached. The Philippines also suffered severe weather, particularly in the northern Batanes islands, where enormous waves struck coastal communities and roads were closed.Weather agencies predicted Champi would pass close to Taiwan's northeastern coastline before moving towards Japan's Okinawa islands and eventually curving northeast towards mainland Japan. However, meteorologists warned that unpredictable movements could still bring the storm directly over Taiwan.Heavy rainfall was expected to peak on Saturday morning, with dangerous conditions continuing into the evening.Featured Image Credit: Gallo Images/Orbital Horizon/Copernicus Sentinel Data 2026Topics: Weather, World News

BACKGRIDWhen asked whether he was alleging that Berry had committed acts of abuse against him dating back 10 years, Martinez replied, “Correct.”He also acknowledged alleging further abuse in 2023, including statements Berry purportedly made to their 13-year-old son, Maceo. However, Beck then presented Martinez with a declaration he signed under penalty of perjury on Sept. 30, 2024, in which he stated there had been no history of domestic violence between him and Berry. After Martinez confirmed that the signature on the document was his, Beck directed him to a section addressing the former couple’s history of domestic violence.Berry’s ex-husband was confronted with his own previous sworn statement denying any history of domestic violence between the former couple. BACKGRIDMartinez, seen in court on Tuesday, claimed the incident was part of a larger pattern of abusive behavior that caused the teenager emotional distress. London Entertainment“That was related to need-based attorneys fees, that’s a financial request,” Baghdaserians explained.“There was no conviction of domestic violence at the time so his statement is correct. At the time there was no restraining order ever requested, ever entered.”He added, “So the statement, it’s correct. There is no history of domestic violence restraining orders.
