7 Self-Protective Habits That Quietly Damage Close Relationships New

7 Self-Protective Habits That Quietly Damage Close Relationships

1. You assume rejection before anyone can explainWhen you expect disappointment, neutral behavior can look personal. A delayed reply becomes disinterest; a tired tone feels like anger. Reacting to that interpretation may create conflict where none existed. Before responding, separate what happened from the meaning you assigned to it. “They answered briefly” is a fact; “They no longer care” is a conclusion. Asking a calm question gives the relationship room to reveal the truth.2. You test people instead of stating your needsSecret tests can feel safer than direct requests. You might stop initiating contact to see whether someone notices, or insist you are fine while hoping they will push harder. The other person does not know the rules, yet their response becomes evidence of how much they care.Clear language is more vulnerable but more accurate. Saying, “I need reassurance today,” creates a real opportunity for connection instead of setting an invisible trap.3. You overexplain to prevent being misunderstoodLong explanations often come from a reasonable wish to avoid judgment. But when every choice arrives with a detailed defense, conversations can feel tense and trust can erode. The hidden message is that disagreement would be dangerous or intolerable.Try offering the essential truth first: “I cannot come tonight because I need rest.” Pause there. You can add context if it is requested, but you do not have to build a courtroom case around every boundary.4. You withdraw before conflict can become uncomfortableTaking space can be healthy; disappearing without explanation is different. Silence may protect you from immediate discomfort, but it leaves the other person alone with uncertainty. Over time, they may stop raising important concerns because they expect the connection to vanish. If you need a pause, name it and include a return point: “I am overwhelmed, but I want to continue this tomorrow.” That preserves safety for both people without forcing a conversation before you are ready.5. You keep score instead of discussing resentmentUnspoken scorekeeping turns kindness into evidence: who called first, apologized more, or carried the heavier burden. It can provide a sense of control, yet the other person may not realize they are falling behind until frustration erupts.Use the pattern as information rather than ammunition. If you are consistently giving more than you can sustain, describe the imbalance while it is still manageable. Honest renegotiation is more useful than presenting a list of charges months later.6. You reject support to avoid feeling dependentExtreme self-reliance can look like strength while quietly limiting intimacy. Refusing every favor, hiding difficult days, or immediately repaying kindness may prevent you from feeling indebted. It also prevents others from experiencing the trust involved in being useful to you.Start small. Accept a ride, admit that you are struggling, or let someone bring dinner without racing to restore the balance. Receiving support does not erase your competence; it allows closeness to move in both directions.7. You mistake emotional intensity for genuine closenessIf unpredictable relationships feel familiar, calm connection may initially seem flat. You might interpret uncertainty, dramatic reconciliation, or constant reassurance-seeking as passion, while steadiness feels suspicious or boring. That reaction does not automatically mean the calmer relationship lacks depth.Notice what remains when the adrenaline is absent: curiosity, respect, reliability, warmth, and room to be yourself. Healthy closeness can be emotionally rich without repeatedly making you fear that the bond is about to disappear.

Michael Douglas reveals the cancer treatment that left him completely powerless New

Michael Douglas reveals the cancer treatment that left him completely powerless

Updated 16:55 6 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 16:40 6 Oct 2026 GMT+1The 82-year-old star retired from acting in 2025 after a lengthy careerWarning: This article contains discussion of cancer which some readers may find distressing. In 2010, Michael Douglas was diagnosed with stage four squamous cell carcinoma oral cancer. And in a 2013 interview, the actor claimed this came as a result of human papillomavirus (HPV) caused by ‘cunnilingus’.Douglas later apologised for the 'embarrassment' his comments had caused his wife, Catherine Zeta Jones, by saying ‘it's a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer’.AdvertNow, in a new interview, the 82-year-old has praised how ‘supportive and wonderful’ the Kill Jackie star was through it all as he reflected on how his life has changed since. For the Basic Instinct actor, his priorities shifted after his stage IV tongue cancer diagnosis and he’s happy watching his family thrive. The pair have been married since 2000. (Arnold Jerocki/Getty Images)Shortly after his diagnosis, Douglas underwent an eight-week intensive course of chemotherapy and radiation and lost 20kg on a liquids-only diet.He told The Guardian in 2013: “That's a rough ride. That can really take it out of you."Plus the amount of chemo I was getting, it zaps all the good stuff too. It made me very weak."Douglas writes in his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, that he 'hated every part' of the treatment as he had to lay still wearing a thermoplastic mesh mask that hardened."I felt like I was suffocating, completely powerless," he writes. "At first the pain was bad but manageable, but by the third week I was in real trouble."Reflecting on all of this, well over a decade later since he did his interview at nearly two years cancer-free, he's also opened up again to PEOPLE.“During my bout of chemo and radiation, being knocked out and seeing the support that I got from my children — who didn’t quite understand everything but enough to know that Dad’s sick — really reminded me of this idea of how close family is and how supportive [and] wonderful Catherine was,” he said. The actor added that it played an ‘important part’ when it came to ‘slowing down a little bit’ as well as ‘cherishing those’ who are closest to him.“After that, my priorities changed,” Douglas said, as he writes in his memoir that cancer made him 'a free man'.He retired last year. (Mireya Acierto/Getty Images)Having produced One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in 1975, the star has a lengthy list of credits as an actor and film producer. That includes starring in the likes of Fatal Attraction, The Game, The Streets of San Francisco and The Kominsky Method. But his last roles came as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV+’s miniseries Franklin in 2024 and Looking Through the Water in 2025.And last year, Douglas announced his retirement from acting as he cited his age and wanting to spend more time with his family as the deciding factors. He told PEOPLE that he’s content seeing his wife and kids thrive in their own products as his role is being ‘responsible to the family for planning the holidays’.Douglas writes in his memoir: "It’s difficult to talk about, but it felt like a rebirth. My priorities changed. Cancer showed me what family is. It made me feel a love that I never knew really existed. I saw everything a little bit clearer, and a little brighter, and became more conscious of how I spent my time.”If you’ve been affected by any of these issues and want to speak to someone in confidence, contact Macmillan’s Cancer Support Line on 0808 808 00 00, 8am–8pm seven days a week.Featured Image Credit: Arnold Jerocki/Getty ImagesTopics: Michael Douglas, Celebrity News, Entertainment

Halle Berry Seeks Custody Change After Temporary Restraining Order New

Halle Berry Seeks Custody Change After Temporary Restraining Order

Published 13:00 6 Oct 2026 GMT+1The actress has strongly denied the claims made by Olivier MartinezHalle Berry has asked a court to restore the custody arrangement she previously shared with ex-husband Olivier Martinez, amid an explosive parenting battle. The move comes days after he was granted a temporary restraining order following allegations concerning their son.The Oscar-winning actress, 60, has denied allegations made by Martinez, also 60, that she physically abused their son, Maceo, 13.According to court documents reported by PEOPLE, Berry is seeking the reinstatement of the former couple’s previous 50/50 custody arrangement.AdvertThe application follows a temporary order granted to Martinez by a Los Angeles County judge earlier this week, which modified Berry’s parenting time and is awaiting a further hearing.Martinez alleged in his filing that an incident took place between Berry and their teenage son on 26 September, during which he claims the actress put her hands around the boy’s neck and choked him.The documents allege: “She grabbed Maceo by the neck and started choking him while shouting, 'Who is dominant now?! Who is dominant?!'", reports HELLO!.Berry strongly disputes that account. The couple divorced in 2015 but it has been a contentious custody battle over their son ever since (Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic)TMZ reports that the actress said the incident began while Maceo was using a virtual reality headset and developed into what she described as ‘playfully roughhousing’.Berry denied putting her hands around his neck, choking him or restricting his breathing. She said the interaction subsequently became more heated with Maceo shoving her, before her fiancé, musician Van Hunt, intervened.Berry stated unequivocally in her filing: “I would never hurt our child.”She also described herself as a survivor of domestic violence and an advocate for victims, although she did not identify an alleged perpetrator in the filing reported by TMZ, and has only referred to that person generally as an ex.Her lawyer, Marina Beck, previously described Martinez’s allegations as ‘entirely meritless and deliberately misleading’, adding that Berry would continue to fight for her son’s best interests.Martinez’s lawyer, Patrick Baghdaserians, has said his client’s principal concern is the child’s ‘health, welfare and safety’.Halle Berry said in the filings that her fiancé, Van Hunt, had to intervene after 'roughhousing' turned heated (Photo by Marc Piasecki/FilmMagic)Martinez is seeking changes to the former couple’s custody arrangements and has made a series of further allegations about Berry’s behaviour, which she contests. The temporary order has not stopped Berry from having contact with her son, instead, it temporarily limits her parenting time to specific daytime hours on Mondays, Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The judge declined Martinez’s request for sobriety monitoring, saying there was insufficient information to justify it.California family law attorney Christopher C. Melcher, who is not involved in the case, told PEOPLE that such an order ‘is not a determination on the merits’, but a temporary measure imposed until the court can hold a fuller hearing and make findings after considering both sides. In her latest application, Berry has also raised concerns of her own about the co-parenting relationship, alleging that Maceo often returns from his father’s home 'angry' with her and has accused Martinez of undermining their relationship.Berry also says their son is neurodivergent and alleged that Martinez refused to seek additional support or help for Maceo, instead saying the child is 'old enough' to make his own decisions. The documents say that Martinez's alleged 'refusal to allow early interventions have caused Maceo to fall further behind in school, caused Maceo’s acting out behaviours to worsen, and caused further damage' to their relationship.Halle Berry has strongly denied all of the claims made against her by her ex, Olivier Martinez (Photo by David Livingston/Getty Images)“It took Maceo 2-3 days to acclimate to being at home and when he would go back to Olivier, the cycle would start all over again," the filing claims.Martinez has separately characterised the relationship between Berry and their son as 'contentious'.He alleged this wasn’t the first reported incident either, claiming ‘other incidents involve additional physical attacks against our son, as well as verbal and emotional abuse from Petitioner to me,’ according to PEOPLE.Berry and Martinez married in 2013 and filed for divorce in 2015, which was finalised in 2023, when they agreed to joint legal custody of their son.Following the divorce, Berry agreed to pay Martinez $8,000 a month in child support. There was also an additional agreement that she would pay him ‘4.3% of any income she receives above $2,000,000’.The court dispute is continuing, with a further hearing regarding the restraining order scheduled for October 16.Featured Image Credit: Joshua Blanchard/Getty Images for Treats! The Inbetweeners 3 Set Photos Spark a Surprising Flashback Theory New

The Inbetweeners 3 Set Photos Spark a Surprising Flashback Theory

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page Filming on The Inbetweeners 3 is well underway, but new set photos have left fans more confused than Neil trying to work out what Swansea is. Spoilers: it’s not an animal. Anyway, new set photos show the boys — Will, Jay, Simon, and Neil — back on their old estate and getting into trouble. It’s just like old times. In fact, it’s a little too much like old times for some fans, who are wondering why the lads are still dressing like they’re teenagers. After all, the boys are in their late thirties to early forties now; you’d expect their sartorial tastes to have changed with the time, and you’d definitely have thought Simon would have outgrown looking like a spotty baby crossed with the Statue of Liberty. You’ve got a lot of gel in your hair, Simon. It smells quite strongly. (Picture: GoffPhotos.com) The boys are back in town… or the suburbs (Picture: GoffPhotos.com) ‘I hope there’s a lore reason that Jay is wearing that still and him and Simon have the same hair,’ wrote rchius9 on Reddit. ‘I really dislike legacy sequels where the characters haven’t grown or aesthetically changed in any way.’ ‘As fun as it is to see Simon’s hair gelled, it does make me kind of worried,’ agreed AlexMercer28900. Filming was taking place at Simon’s old house (Picture: GoffPhotos.com) Why is Jay still wearing that jacket… wait, is that Tara?! Beepity beep beep! (Picture: GoffPhotos.com) ‘I really don’t want these guys to act the same way in their 40s like they did when they played teenagers. Simon spiking up his hair when he’s almost middle-aged, I hope, is the outlier and not something that will be consistent throughout.’ Rasples1998, however, had a slightly more nuanced take on the characters still looking the same. ‘I think the point is that they got older but never grew up,’ they wrote. ‘I’d expect the theme of this to be about maturing and personal growth and for the boys to finally start acting like adults and taking responsibility, but I’m just guessing.’ It is Tara (Beepity beep beep!), and she’s pregnant (Picture: GoffPhotos.com) I bet it still has a tape deck (Picture: GoffPhotos.com) Others, however, have a different theory, and it involves another returning character, Simon’s ex, Tara (beepity beep beep!). In the photos, a pregnant Tara can be seen standing about, and that’s got some people wondering if this might be a flashback to the boy’s younger days, which would also explain why Simon’s car, the iconic yellow Fiat Cinquecento Hawaii, is still up and running. Is he a police fwend? (Picture: GoffPhotos.com) Another user said, ‘Simon’s gelled hair is interesting’ because there are photos where he doesn’t have the iconic greasy crown. ‘It could make sense [if this is a flashback],’ they wrote. ‘Or maybe in the film they decide because they are back together to dress like how they used to for a laugh. ‘Tara dresses the same as well, so I’m not sure if it’s meant to be a flashback or present day. I find the Inbetweeners doing flashbacks out of the ordinary, though.’ Sadly, we can’t say what’s happening at this point. All we know is that the film will contain a fairly innocuous jamboree of adolescent nonsense, and which Inbetweeners fans wouldn’t want that?

Portokalli’s Joke About the Protest Sparks Debate: Should Satire Have Limits? New

Portokalli’s Joke About the Protest Sparks Debate: Should Satire Have Limits?

Pikërisht aty fillon materiali i humorit.Kur një protestues del në bulevard dhe bërtet “Arrestoni Ramën!”, protestuesi ka të drejtë ta thotë. Por humoristi ka të drejtë të pyesë: Po kush e arreston? Turma me mikrofon? As të qeverisë.

Trump’s Firing Squad Move Puts These Five States in Focus New

Trump’s Firing Squad Move Puts These Five States in Focus

President Donald Trump has ordered for Nidal Hasan, the former U.S. Army psychiatrist who gunned down 13 unarmed U.S. soldiers in Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009, to be executed by firing squad.Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said on social media that the suggestion to use the firing squad was made by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and later approved by the president. The mass shooter, who was sentenced to death by a military jury in 2013, is set to become the first U.S. soldier to be executed in more than 60 years....But use of this particular method of execution—and call for introducing it in states that do not allow it—is on the rise across the country after the Trump administration reintroduced firing squads, electrocution and gas asphyxiation as alternative methods of executing people sentenced to the death penalty in April, especially as concerns over the use of the lethal injections pile up.What Does Execution by Firing Squad Mean?Firing squad is one of five methods of carrying out the death penalty that the U.S. has used historically, including lethal injection, electrocution, gas and hanging. The firing squad has been used only six times since 1977, when the use of capital punishment resumed after a 10-year pause. Trump added it to the permissible forms of execution for the gravest of federal crimes last year, though it remains rare.Lethal injection has historically been the most commonly used method since 1976, followed by electrocution, while hanging is currently illegal in all U.S. states. Which States Allow Execution by Firing Squad? There is a difference between the majority of executions in the U.S. and those involving U.S. Army personnel. Under military law, any military execution requires appellate review and a final judgment on its legality to move forward, after which it needs to be approved by the U.S. president. Most of the executions not involving U.S. Army personnel are carried out at the state level, at least in those 27 states where capital punishment is still legal. These include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.California, Ohio, Oregon and Pennsylvania do not actively execute sentences either due to an official governor’s moratorium. Oregon and Wyoming have no inmates on death row.A total of 23 states and Washington, D.C., have completely abolished capital punishment.Within the 21 states that have the active authority and capability to carry out executions, only five allow executions to happen by firing squad, including Idaho, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah. While in most cases inmates can choose between different methods of execution, as of July 1, 2026, the firing squad is Idaho’s primary execution method.Tennessee’s inmate Christa Pike recently asked to be executed by firing squad, but the state only authorizes lethal injection and electrocution as methods of capital punishment. A Tennessee congressman, House Speaker Cameron Sexton, is now asking the state to consider the firing squad after Pike survived the lethal injection. Newsweek contacted Sexton's office for comment by email on Tuesday and is awaiting a response....How Does Execution by Firing Squad Work? In an execution by firing squad, a group of trained individuals, made up of anonymous volunteers from state corrections, law enforcement departments or the military, shoot simultaneously with firearms at a condemned, restrained inmate. Those shooting are aiming for the inmate’s heart. The composition of the firing squad can vary, with South Carolina using firing squads made of three volunteers and Utah using squads of five certified local law enforcement officers or peace officers....In South Carolina, prisoners are strapped to a metal chair that sits on a catch basin, according to The Associated Press, some 15 feet away from the firing squad. The squad uses bullets that are designed to break apart on impact, causing maximum damage to the heart. The idea of having multiple people firing at the same target at the same time helps prevent anyone from knowing who exactly might have fired the deadly shot. When Was the Last Firing Squad Execution? Until last year, executions by firing squad were rare in the U.S. and something of a relic of the past. But between March and November, three executions by firing squad were carried out in South Carolina, including that of Brad Keith Sigmon in March, that of Mikal Mahdi in April and that of Stephen Corey Bryant in November.Sigmon’s execution was the first by firing squad in the country since that of Ronnie Lee Gardner in 2010 and the first ever to be carried out in South Carolina. Sigmon had been given two death sentences in 2002 for the double murder of his ex-girlfriend’s parents in 2001.Mahdi was sentenced to death in 2006 after murdering at least two people in a multistate crime spree, including off-duty police officer James Myers. Bryant was sentenced to death in 2008 after killing three people in October 2004....All three men chose to be executed by firing squad, as, under a South Carolina law passed in 2021, inmates have the option to pick between firing squad, the electric chair or lethal injection. In 2024, the state’s Supreme Court ruled that all three methods—the firing squad, the electric chair and lethal injection—are legal and the firing squad is not cruel, as a prisoner would not suffer longer than 15 seconds.Mahdi’s execution, however, raised questions of whether it is a humane method of executing an inmate, as an autopsy commissioned by the state found that man might have suffered for an extended period of time before dying because shooters missed his heart. When Will Hasan Be Executed?Hasan was a U.S. Army psychiatrist from Virginia who became radicalized after his mother’s death, when his embracing of religious conservatism alienated from his own family, according to a study by the Program on Extremism by The George Washington University. On November 5, 2009, he shouted "Allahu akbar" and opened fire at Fort Hood, killing 13 unarmed U.S. soldiers and injuring 32 more. The shooting has become known as one of the most infamous cases of lone-actor terrorism, and it was the deadliest ever noncombat attack on a U.S. military base. The Secretary of the Army will set the time and place of the execution, according to Parnell. "Judgement day for Hasan has finally come," the Pentagon spokesperson wrote. Hegseth wrote on social media, sharing Parnell’s post on X: "Justice."Three other inmates are currently on the U.S. military’s death row with Hasan.Newsweek’s reporters and editors used Martyn, our AI assistant, to produce this story.
