Anojan Sivarasa Faces Death Sentence Despite Deleting Post and Apologising New

Anojan Sivarasa Faces Death Sentence Despite Deleting Post and Apologising

Updated 12:57 6 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 10:28 6 Oct 2026 GMT+1Saudi Arabia publicly beheaded someone for blasphemy as recently as 1992Desperate diplomatic attempts are being made to halt the execution of a 24-year-old man from Sri Lanka over a now-deleted Facebook post.Anojan Sivarasa had moved to Saudi Arabia and has been given the death sentence in the country after being found guilty of blasphemy against Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. The alleged blasphemy was in a comment that the 24-year-old had made on Facebook, which has since been deleted, and the case has now caused shock in Sri Lanka, where the government has launched diplomatic efforts to prevent the execution from being carried out.Anojan made the comment during an argument on social media which resulted from an incident during a Hindu pilgrimage in Sri Lanka, where video footage of a young Muslim man kicking a dog which had been following Hindu pilgrims began to spread online.AdvertThis led to outrage online, and during the argument, a user made insulting remarks about a Hindu god.Anojan Sivarasa parents have met with the president of Sri Lanka (Instagram/anurakumaraofficial)Anojan responded to this with derogatory comments about the Prophet Muhammad, written in Tamil, which he swiftly deleted before posting a video apologising for the comment. However, a screenshot of the comments had been taken, which was shared with officials in Saudi Arabia and his employer, and he was arrested in July.Anojan's accounts have since been deleted after Saudi authorities seized his devices. His brother Hamsidan Sivarasa told the BBC: "People in Saudi Arabia knew nothing about this matter. It was individuals in Sri Lanka who sent emails to the company where my brother worked. I do not even wish to mention who those people are."Anojan's mother has also issued a plea for her son's life, saying: "I plead for mercy for the wrongs committed by my son. Please forgive him and send him back to us."People accused of blasphemy in Saudi Arabia who faced death penalty (LADbible/ITV/Supplied)Initially, Anojan was given a sentence of five years in prison, and a fine of 3 million Saudi riyals, just over £600,000, but on 17 September Saudi prosecutors filed an appeal that he be tried under Sharia Law instead of cybercrime law, with an appeal court allowing this request, meaning that the sentence became the death penalty. The last person to be executed for blasphemy in Saudi Arabia was 23-year-old Sadeq Abdul Kareem Malallah, who was beheaded in 1992 for insulting 'God, the holy Koran and Muhammad the prophet'.Sri Lanka's government is now pursuing all options in an effort to commute the sentence and obtain a general pardon, with Anojan's family meeting Sri Lankan president Anura Kumara Dissanayake on 21 September, where he told the family the government was directing diplomatic efforts at the case.A legal delegation from Sri Lanka is travelling to Saudi Arabia to meet with defence lawyers representing Anojan.Upul Kumarapperuma, President's Counsel, is a member of the team, and said: "There are two law firms in Saudi Arabia handling Anojan's case. We are going there to meet the lawyers from these two firms, discuss the case and plan what can be done next."The general law court in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (AFP via Getty Images)Anojan has lost communication with his family, with his brother saying on 28 September that they had not had word from him in two days.At present, Saudi authorities have not made public any official timeline indicating when the execution is scheduled to be carried out, and the country has previously executed people with no warning to either their families or embassies.Saudi Arabia has a large population of people from South Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The majority of executions carried out in Saudi Arabia are for drugs offences or murder.According to Amnesty International, of the 96 people executed in Sri Lanka between 1 January and 22 June 2026, 39 were foreign nationals and 61 were executed for drug offences.Featured Image Credit: Facebook/Anojan SivarasaTopics: World News, Crime, News, Saudi Arabia

7 Quiet Ways You Abandon Yourself to Keep the Peace New

7 Quiet Ways You Abandon Yourself to Keep the Peace

1. You agree before checking what you actually wantSomeone asks for a favor, and “sure” leaves your mouth before you notice the tension in your body. The problem is not generosity; it is skipping your own response to avoid disappointing someone.Create a small pause before committing. Try, “Let me check and get back to you.” That sentence gives your real preference time to surface. A thoughtful answer may feel less pleasing in the moment, but it prevents obligations you later perform with exhaustion or resentment.2. You turn a simple no into a courtroom defenseWhen declining something requires a long explanation, you may be trying to make your boundary impossible to challenge. Unfortunately, extra reasons often give people more material to debate: they solve one obstacle, question another, and keep pushing.Practice offering less evidence. “I can’t make it, but thank you for inviting me” is complete. You can be warm without presenting a case. A respectful person does not need your refusal to pass a test before accepting it.3. You treat other people’s moods as your responsibilityA partner becomes quiet, a colleague looks irritated, or a parent sounds disappointed—and you immediately start repairing the atmosphere. You apologize, become extra agreeable, or abandon your plans before anyone has asked you to.Other people’s feelings can matter without becoming your assignment. Instead of guessing, ask once: “Is something wrong that we need to discuss?” If the answer is no, resist performing emotional rescue. Discomfort in the room does not automatically mean you caused it.4. You edit your memory when someone dismisses your hurtYou clearly remember a cutting remark, but after hearing “You’re too sensitive,” you begin rewriting the event. Maybe it was harmless. Maybe you imagined the tone. This habit teaches you to trust another person’s interpretation more than your own experience. You do not need to prove malicious intent to acknowledge impact. Write down what happened before discussing it, including the exact words and how you responded. The goal is not to build a prosecution; it is to remain anchored in what you experienced.5. You use humor to make disrespect easier to swallowLaughing can be a graceful way to handle awkwardness, but it can also hide the moment you felt belittled. You join the joke so nobody calls you difficult, then replay it privately long after everyone else has moved on.Try responding without hostility or a smile: “That didn’t land well with me.” Calm directness gives the other person a chance to correct course. More importantly, it shows you that belonging does not have to depend on pretending something painless was funny.6. You stay loyal to potential instead of present behaviorSelf-abandonment can look like endless patience with someone’s future version. You focus on apologies, promises, or occasional tenderness while minimizing the pattern that repeatedly leaves you anxious, depleted, or unseen.Hope is not foolish, but it needs evidence. Compare what the person says with what consistently happens over time. Ask yourself whether you would recommend this situation to someone you love. Relationships should be evaluated by recurring behavior, not by the most beautiful explanation for why that behavior might eventually change.7. Your resentment says what your politeness keeps hidingResentment often arrives after too many unspoken yeses. You may blame others for taking what you repeatedly offered, even when they never understood the cost. That does not make the feeling unfair; it makes it informative.Instead of shaming yourself for being bitter, identify the concealed boundary beneath it. Perhaps you need more notice, shared effort, privacy, or permission to decline. Express the need before resentment hardens into contempt. Peace built on your silence is not genuine peace.

Why Emmerdale and Coronation Street Have Disappeared From ITV Tonight New

Why Emmerdale and Coronation Street Have Disappeared From ITV Tonight

Football impacts the soaps once more (Picture: ITV) Sorry soap fans, I have some bad news. Emmerdale and Coronation Street won’t be airing this evening. Remember the summer, when it felt like the ITV soaps were barely on because of the football? Our naïve selves thought things would get back to normal once autumn arrived, but it really has been a year of soap sacrifice for football. The World Cup caused constant schedule changes, then there was the Carabao Cup, and now the UEFA Nations League. All tournaments have seen the soaps shunted around the schedules, with missing weekday episodes and the occasional double-up and Sunday special. Well, here we go again! Here’s everything you need to know about the schedules for Coronation Street and Emmerdale this week. Why aren’t Emmerdale and Coronation Street on this evening? To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page Emmerdale and Corrie won’t be airing this evening due to ITV covering the UEFA Nations League match between England and Czechia. The coverage begins at 7pm and won’t end until 10:05pm, which means there sadly isn’t any room for Corrie and Emmerdale in the schedules tonight. Today’s episodes haven’t been uploaded to ITVX or YouTube either, so don’t go over there to look! You can still take a trip to soapland though, as EastEnders is airing on BBC One at 7:30pm. When will they be back? Emotions continue to run high for Christina this week (Picture: ITV) Fortunately, you don’t have too long to wait to see the Emmerdale and Corrie residents again, as they will be back on our screens in the usual slots of 8pm and 8:30pm tomorrow (October 7) night. The football won’t impact the schedules for the rest of the week, thankfully, with both ITV soaps airing as normal on Thursday and Friday as well. What is happening in Emmerdale and Corrie this week? Following Gabby Thomas’ (Rosie Bentham) panic attack yesterday, her health gets worse when she suddenly collapses, forcing Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) to call an ambulance. In the hospital, Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Sarker) supports Laurel and Gabby as she shares more information about Gabby’s diagnosis, an eating disorder called orthorexia. Charity is released (Picture: ITV) Elsewhere, after DS Thea Ramsden’s (Chelsea Edge) risky move at work, Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) returns home, and quickly learns that Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) has no intention of forgiving her over the lie about baby Leyla. I mean, why would she?! In Weatherfield, Jodie Ramsey’s (Oliva Frances-Brown) obsession with David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) reaches new heights. Also, George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) and Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) discover that Rachel’s ashes have gone missing, and later find Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins) in the precinct with the urn in her hands.

Why George, Charlotte and Louis Use a Different Surname at School New

Why George, Charlotte and Louis Use a Different Surname at School

Published 17:03 5 Oct 2026 GMT+1Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis use a different surname at school as reason for change revealedThe royal youngsters previously underwent a name changePrince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis may have some of the most recognisable names in the country, but things are kept rather less formal when they’re at school. It turns out that the Prince and Princess of Wales’s three children don’t use their full royal titles in the classroom. After all, it might be a bit weird for their classmates to have to call them by their titles, and create an us-versus-them divide. The decision to use a different surname is a practical arrangement which follows a long-standing royal tradition, and also explains why the children previously went by a completely different surname.AdvertGeorge, Charlotte and Louis once used the last name ‘Cambridge’ at school, reflecting the Prince William and Kate Middleton’s titles at the time, of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.Prince George, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte go by different surnames at school (Photo by Karwai Tang/WireImage)That changed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022 and the accession of King Charles III.Prince William subsequently became the Prince of Wales, while his wife Catherine became the Princess of Wales. Their children also became Prince George of Wales, Princess Charlotte of Wales and Prince Louis of Wales. As a result, the informal surname they could use at school changed from Cambridge to Wales. It meant that George, Charlotte and Louis started at Lambrook School as the Cambridge children before becoming the Wales children following the major change in the Royal Family. The change means that when a surname is required now, they are known as George Wales, Charlotte Wales and Louis Wales. The custom might sound unusual outside Royal circles, but it has plenty of precedent within William’s own family.William and his younger brother Prince Harry were known as William Wales and Harry Wales at school because their father, the now King Charles, was Prince of Wales at the time. The brothers continued using Wales in other areas of their lives. The change means they don't have to use their titles at school (Photo by Jeff J Mitchell/Getty Images)During their military careers, for example, William and Harry were known by the surname Wales rather than using their full royal titles. In 1960, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip declared that their descendants who required a surname would use Mountbatten-Windsor, combining the Royal Family’s Windsor name with Philip’s Mountbatten family name. However, royals who possess titles do not necessarily need to use a conventional surname in the same way as most people. The practice has been followed elsewhere in the family. Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, for example, have previously used York, reflecting their father Prince Andrew’s Duke of York title.George, Charlotte and Louis’s school lives are now beginning to take different paths.George, who turned 13 in July, started at Eton College in September 2026, following in his father’s footsteps. William attended the Berkshire boarding school between 1995 and 2000.Charlotte, 11, and Louis, eight, remain at Lambrook, the Berkshire preparatory school the three siblings began attending together in 2022.While classmates may share lessons with George Wales, Charlotte Wales and Louis Wales, outside the school gates they remain three of the most prominent young members of the Royal Family and have the titles to match.Featured Image Credit: Chris Jackson/Getty ImagesTopics: Royal Family, Prince George, Prince Louis, Princess Charlotte

Trump Draws Reactions With His Message on High Gas Prices
