Why an $26,000 HOA Bill Could Force Beverly Albright Out New

Why an $26,000 HOA Bill Could Force Beverly Albright Out

See more of our coverage in your search results. An 81-year-old California homeowner says she will be forced out of her longtime home after her condo association slapped each resident with a $26,000 emergency assessment — as furious neighbors fight back against the massive bill.Owners at the 198-unit Vilamoura at Rancho San Clemente condominium complex were hit with the special assessment to fund a major roof replacement project, according to ABC7.“Retired, single, what, lose my house? I wouldn’t qualify for a loan to refinance. So where do you go?” Beverly Albright told ABC7.The 198-unit Vilamoura condo complex in San Clemente. ABC7Beverly Albright, 81, fears the assessment could force her to move. ABC7Albright, who lives on a fixed income, told the Los Angeles Times that her children have already had to help her financially and that she is considering borrowing money to cover the charge.“I will have to move,” she told ABC7. “I’ve worked very hard to make it so that I could be here.”Residents say they were given several ways to cough up the money: pay the more than $26,000 bill outright, split it into two payments or enter a payment plan that initially adds more than $2,000 to their monthly costs. That comes on top of regular HOA dues, which resident Megan Blanda said already run more than $500 a month.“They can’t throw a $26,000 bill at us because the roof has been neglected all these years,” Blanda, 42, told The Times.Residents say the aging roofs don’t qualify as an emergency. ABC7The homeowners aren’t just fighting the price tag — they’re challenging the HOA’s decision to classify the work as an emergency.Residents contend the roofs were a long-known maintenance issue and therefore should not qualify for an emergency assessment that can be imposed without a homeowner vote.“It was not an emergency; it’s deferred maintenance,” homeowner Noah Martin told ABC7. “And so, then we as members should have a vote on how we want to take care of the roofs.”Some residents also argue that the roofs are not currently leaking and say they want the association to seek multiple competitive bids before moving ahead with the project. The HOA, however, maintains that replacing the roofs is necessary to prevent potentially severe damage.James R. McCormick, an attorney representing the association, told The Times that an independent expert found deteriorated waterproofing and problems with the original tile installation and warned that delaying replacement could lead to serious interior damage.McCormick acknowledged that roof maintenance “should have been planned for and performed in prior years,” but said the work now needs to be done.San Clemente residents are fighting back against the massive HOA assessment. Thomas – stock.adobe.comThe overall project is expected to cost a combined $5.2 million, including about $500,000 for fire-suppression system repairs. Residents who fail to pay could face even bigger consequences. The association has sent lien notices warning delinquent homeowners that the process could ultimately lead to foreclosure. Now a group of residents is attempting to recall members of the HOA board and take control of the association.Blanda and other homeowners involved in the effort say they obtained an estimate for a temporary weatherproofing plan costing roughly $400 per owner, which they believe could protect the roofs through the winter while a longer-term replacement is planned. The association disputes that delaying the full replacement is a viable solution.“The unfortunate reality is that this recall process will not change the status of the roofs or otherwise obviate the need for immediate roof replacement,” McCormick said. The San Clemente fight comes as steep special assessments become increasingly common at aging California condo developments, where associations are grappling with major maintenance bills, rising insurance costs and new safety requirements.

6 Ways Your Mind Turns Uncertainty Into Anxiety—and How to Interrupt It New

6 Ways Your Mind Turns Uncertainty Into Anxiety—and How to Interrupt It

1. Your brain fills information gaps with threatsWhen facts are missing, the mind rarely leaves the space empty. It starts writing explanations, often favoring danger because danger feels important. A delayed reply becomes rejection; a closed-door meeting becomes bad news.Separate what you know from what you are imagining. Write two short lists: confirmed facts and possible explanations. This does not erase uncertainty, but it prevents one frightening interpretation from quietly presenting itself as reality.2. You mistake constant thinking for useful preparationReplaying a problem can feel responsible, especially when the outcome matters. But productive planning creates a decision or action; rumination keeps circling the same questions without producing anything new.Ask yourself, “Is there a step I can take today?” If yes, make it specific and small. If not, choose when you will revisit the issue. Giving thought a boundary helps distinguish genuine preparation from mental repetition that only deepens distress.3. Your body reacts before evidence arrivesUncertainty can trigger physical tension before you have decided what anything means. A tight chest, restless energy or shallow breathing may then seem like proof that something is wrong. The sensation becomes part of the story. Before analyzing the situation, settle your body enough to think clearly. Unclench your jaw, lengthen your exhale, stand up or walk briefly. The goal is not forced calm; it is avoiding major conclusions while your nervous system is sounding an alarm.4. You keep checking for relief that never lastsRefreshing your inbox, rereading a message or repeatedly asking for reassurance can reduce anxiety for a moment. The relief fades, so you check again. Over time, checking teaches your mind that uncertainty is unbearable unless it is constantly monitored.Create a reasonable interval before checking again—perhaps 30 minutes for a non-urgent message. Expect some discomfort. Each time you wait without disaster, you practice carrying uncertainty rather than demanding immediate relief from it.5. You confuse possible outcomes with probable onesAn anxious mind can generate vivid worst-case scenarios and then treat their emotional intensity as evidence. Something being possible, however, does not make it the most likely outcome. Your imagination is showing range, not making a forecast.Name three alternatives: the feared outcome, a neutral outcome and a manageable positive one. Then ask what evidence supports each. This widens your attention without pretending everything will be fine and helps you respond to likelihood rather than vividness.6. You postpone living until certainty finally appearsThe deepest cost of uncertainty is often not the feared event but the life placed on hold while waiting for answers. You cancel plans, withdraw from people or delay meaningful work because enjoyment feels inappropriate before the issue is resolved.Choose one ordinary activity to continue despite not knowing: cook dinner, attend the class or call a friend. Moving forward is not denial. It reminds you that uncertainty can occupy part of your life without controlling all of it.

Trump’s Nidal Hasan Firing Squad Decision Could Mark Military History New

Trump’s Nidal Hasan Firing Squad Decision Could Mark Military History

Updated 03:20 6 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 02:57 6 Oct 2026 GMT+1Nidal Hasan killed 13 people and injured dozens more in a 2009 mass shooting US President Donald Trump has approved the death by firing squad for Fort Wood mass shooter Nidal Hasan.Hassan, a former US army major, killed 13 people and injured 30 more in the 2009 shooting at the Texas army base.Hasan claimed he carried out the terror attack due to his anger at being deployed to Afghanistan and out of a wish to protect Islamic and Taliban leaders from US troops. The 56-year-old was sentenced to death by a military court in 2013 and is now set to become the first service member to be executed by armed forces since 1961.AdvertIn an update today, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, said President Trump had approved the use of the firing squad following a recommendation from the US Secretary of War.Writing on X, Parnell said: “Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has recommended — and President Donald J. Trump has approved — death by US Army firing squad for convicted terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan, the jihadist who opened fire on unarmed American soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009."He killed 13 people and wounded 32 others while shouting 'Allahu Akbar' during the attack."The Secretary of the Army will set the time and place of the execution. Judgement day for Hasan has finally come."Hesgeth re-posted Parnell's statement to his own X account alongside the single word: "Justice."As yet, a date for the execution has not been announced but army guidelines state that it must take place within 150 days of the President’s approval, but no sooner than 60 days, ABC reports. Nidal Hasan will face death by firing squad for the 2009 Fort Wood mass shooting (U.S. Government Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences via Getty Images)The horrific attack happened on 5 November 2009, when then-army psychiatrist Hasan opened fire at the Soldier Readiness Processing Center at the Fort Hood military base. He fatally shot 12 soldiers and one civilian, as well as injuring 32 others, before he was shot and severely wounded. At trial in 2013, he told the court that he had ‘switched sides’ and said he had carried out the attack to prevent US soldiers being deployed to kill Muslims. Lawyers also argued that Hasan did not want to go on an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan.Hasan was convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder and sentenced to death. He has since been held at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.Hasan's exhausted his appeals in 2025, clearing the way for his execution to go ahead. He is one of just four inmates on death row in the US army’s justice system. The last time the military executed a service member was in 1961, when Private John Bennett was convicted of the rape and attempted murder of an 11-year-old girl in Austria and handed a death sentence. In the United States, firing squad executions are extremely rare. Last year, South Carolina carried out three executions by firing squad for Brad Sigmon, Mikal Mahdi and Stephen Bryant, which were the first such executions in the US for more than a decade. Following the botched execution of Christa Pike last month, there has been renewed calls for alternatives to the lethal injection, including firing squad. Caleb Flynn’s Daughters Draw Attention With Heartbreaking Sentencing Statements

See more of our coverage in your search results. The daughter of “American Idol” alum and ex-church pastor Caleb Flynn blasted her dad for sinning “big time” by having an affair with a “dirty girl” before killing her mother – as his other daughter vowed to never visit him in prison. The 40-year-old father of two sobbed and sweat profusely as blistering statements from his daughters, Ava and Alyssa, were read in court before he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for fatally shooting his wife and their mother, Ashley.“Mommy was the perfect person, the absolutely perfect person,” Ava, 10, said, according to a statement read in court by the girls’ uncle, Matthew Keyt. “What did she ever do to make you hate her so much? … She was my best friend and then you chose to kill the only mother I ever had.”Former “American Idol” contestant Caleb Flynn cried as his daughters read scathing statements at his sentencing. LOCAL 12Ava also blasted her dad for having an affair with Aleigha Botner, an intern at the Ohio church where Flynn was a music pastor.“How could you cheat on her and go to that awful girl Aleigha? I never liked her,” the daughter said.“You and Aleigha sinned big time but you still have a chance to tell God that you are sorry,” Ava said.Flynn’s other daughter laid into her dad, saying it was “sad that you can’t love anyone but yourself,” according to the statement read in court by her grandmother.“You have already caused so much pain to your family and the world. The least you could do is tell everyone that you did it,” read Alyssa’s statement.“By the way, I don’t plan on coming to see you,” the 12-year-old daughter said, apparently referring to his soon-to-be new permanent digs at a state prison. The girls were 9 and 11 when Flynn killed Ashley at their Tipp City home on Feb. 16. He then staged the scene to make it appear as though an intruder carried out the murder, prosecutors claimed. One of his young daughters vowed never to visit him in prison. APThe girls are now being cared for by Ashley’s sister and brother-in-law, Kayla and Matthew Keyt. The Keyts told the judge Monday about how the girls regularly cry as they struggle to come to terms with what happened to them.Kalya said just the other day one of them “was laying beside me, sobbing into my shoulder as they both often do, because she missed her mommy and could not understand how her own father could have done this to all of us.”“Then she looked at me and asked, ‘Why should I even believe in Jesus if he allowed this to happen to us,’” Kayla said.Matthew painted an equally heartbreaking picture when he told the judge how the sisters go to their mom’s grave daily.Young Ava, 10, said her mother Ashley was “the perfect person.” Facebook / Ashley Flynn“Nearly every day we watch as Ashley’s daughters visit their mother’s gravesite,” Matthew said. “I watch them cry and talk to her. They often lie on the grass in front of her tombstone imagining that it will bring them a bit closer to their mom.”Prosecutors claim that Flynn murdered Ashley, 37, because he wanted to start a life with Botner, now 24. The mistress testified against him at trial and was forced to admit she once texted with Flynn about wanting to kill Ashley, a sentiment Flynn agreed with in the messages. Before Judge Jeannine Pratt threw the book at Flynn Monday, he sobbed as he read a lengthy statement lamenting not being able to raise the girls and apologizing for breaking his wedding vows.Still, Flynn maintained he didn’t kill his wife.

10 Subtle Signs You Learned to Minimize Your Own Needs New

10 Subtle Signs You Learned to Minimize Your Own Needs

1. You Say Yes Before Checking Your Own CapacityYour agreement arrives almost automatically, while your honest reaction appears hours later as tension, resentment or exhaustion. This often happens when being helpful feels safer than risking someone’s disappointment. Before answering a request, create a small pause: “Let me check and get back to you.” The goal is not to refuse everything. It is to give your needs a place in the decision before your reflex to accommodate takes over.2. You Apologize for Having Ordinary Human NeedsYou may say sorry for asking a question, needing reassurance, taking a sick day or wanting someone’s attention. The apology quietly frames your existence as an inconvenience, even when your request is reasonable.Notice when “sorry” could be replaced with clearer language. Instead of “Sorry to bother you,” try “Is now a good time?” You can respect another person’s limits without treating your own needs as something shameful.3. You Need Exhaustion to Justify Taking a BreakRest may feel acceptable only after you have finished everything, helped everyone or pushed yourself past usefulness. Until then, slowing down can trigger guilt because productivity has become your permission slip for care.Try scheduling rest before you desperately need it. A quiet evening, an unhurried meal or ten minutes without a task does not have to be earned through depletion. Rest is maintenance, not merely emergency treatment for burnout.4. You Confuse Being Low-Maintenance With Being LovablePerhaps you take pride in never needing much, never complaining and making relationships easy for everyone else. Independence can be healthy, but disappearing emotionally is different. If people rarely know what matters to you, they cannot meaningfully show up for you.Practice expressing one small preference without softening it into nothing: where you want to eat, what support would help or when you need space. Visibility is not the same as being demanding.5. Other People’s Discomfort Quickly Becomes Your EmergencyA changed tone, delayed reply or disappointed expression can send you into repair mode. You explain, reassure or surrender your position before knowing whether anything is actually wrong. Their discomfort feels like evidence that you have failed.Pause and separate empathy from responsibility. You can care that someone is upset without immediately fixing the feeling. Ask what happened, listen and let them own their reaction. Not every uncomfortable moment requires your self-abandonment.6. You Struggle to Name What You Actually WantWhen someone asks what you want, your mind may go blank or immediately scan for the answer that causes the least trouble. Repeatedly adapting to others can make your own preferences difficult to hear.Start with low-stakes choices and notice your first response before considering anyone else: tea or coffee, company or solitude, conversation or quiet. Preferences strengthen through use. You do not need a dramatic life vision to begin listening to yourself again.7. You Explain Your Boundaries Like a Courtroom DefenseA simple no can become a long presentation filled with evidence, apologies and backup reasons. You may hope that if your explanation is flawless, nobody can judge or reject your boundary. But overexplaining often turns a decision into an invitation to negotiate.Use brief, respectful language: “I can’t take that on,” or “That doesn’t work for me.” Context can be kind, but permission is not required. A boundary remains valid even when another person dislikes it.8. You Dismiss Pain Because Someone Else Has It WorseYou may compare your struggle with another person’s tragedy and conclude that you have no right to feel hurt. Perspective can be useful, but comparison does not process emotion; it often silences it. Two people can suffer differently without competing for legitimacy.Try naming the experience without ranking it: “This is hard for me right now.” That sentence does not deny anyone else’s pain. It simply allows you to respond honestly to your own.9. Receiving Care Makes You Uneasy or IndebtedWhen someone helps, compliments or comforts you, gratitude may quickly turn into pressure to repay them. You might minimize the gesture or rush to restore balance because receiving feels vulnerable. Care becomes a transaction instead of a shared human experience.Experiment with letting a small kindness stand. Say “Thank you, that helped” without immediately offering something back. Healthy reciprocity unfolds over time; it does not require an instant settlement every time someone treats you well.10. Resentment Reveals Needs You Never Allowed YourselfPersistent resentment is not always proof that others are selfish. Sometimes it signals that you keep agreeing to arrangements you do not genuinely accept. You give more than you can sustain, then feel unseen because nobody notices the sacrifice you concealed.Treat resentment as information rather than a character flaw. Ask what request, limit or conversation has been avoided. Speaking sooner may feel uncomfortable, but it is often kinder than offering silent generosity that eventually hardens into anger.
