Jeffrey Archer’s final public appearance draws attention after his death at 86

Updated 22:14 5 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 21:32 5 Oct 2026 GMT+1The bestselling writer's last book is due to hit the shelves soonBestselling author and ex-politician Jeffrey Archer has died at the age of 86.Archer, whose last book Adam and Eve is to be published on October 6, sold more than 300 million books in his five-decade-long writing career.Announcing his death, his publisher HarperCollins said he died “suddenly and peacefully at his home between writing sessions” on Monday.Archer, was a Conservative MP for Louth from 1969 to 1974, and Deputy Chairman of the party from 1985 to 1986 under Margaret Thatcher.AdvertHis literary career was launched by his first novel Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, in 1976.Archer continued his public engagements almost to the end of his life (Getty)He was to spend five and a half years on the New York Times bestseller list and over 14 years on the Sunday Times bestseller list. Among his achievements, he is the only author to have won the top spot in the Sunday Times bestseller for fiction, non-fiction and short stories.Only yesterday, he was in central London’s Leicester Square Theatre signing books for hundreds of his adoring fans.HarperCollins UK CEO and Archer’s editor, Kate Elton, said: “It has been one of the great privileges of my publishing life to have been Jeffrey Archer's editor. “He was the master storyteller and an editor's dream - phenomenally hard-working, utterly committed to completing draft after draft to get every word as perfect as possible, and a true champion of the 'team' nature of great publishing. “When he set out to write Adam and Eve he told me from the very beginning that it would be his final novel - he was so excited about the scale of it and told me that if he could pull it off it would equal anything he'd previously written, on which basis he couldn't imagine embarking on any future novels. He sold over 300 million books in his decades long career (getty)“He did indeed pull it off - and he was utterly thrilled by the early reader reactions. We're all devastated to have lost a writer who has brought joy to generations of readers - and a true friend.”Nadhim Zahawi, former Conservative chancellor and posted a tribute to Lord Jeffrey Archer on X.He wrote: “Jeffrey Archer was a dear friend and an extraordinary human being. His gift for storytelling was matched by his wit, warmth and boundless energy. Life was never dull in Jeffrey’s company. As a charity auctioneer, he was a force of nature: commanding a room, making people laugh and persuading them to dig deeper.Archer celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary earlier in the year (Getty)“He used that remarkable talent to raise millions for charitable causes, leaving a legacy of generosity that reaches far beyond his books. Behind the celebrated author was a man with an enormous heart, fiercely loyal to his friends and generous with his time.“My love and deepest condolences go to Mary and the whole family. Jeffrey, it was a privilege to call you my friend. You were one of a kind. May you rest in eternal peace.”He was married to Dame Mary Archer for 60 years, and he is survived by two sons and five grandchildren.Featured Image Credit: (Dave M. 10 Subtle Signs You Learned to Minimize Your Own Needs New

10 Subtle Signs You Learned to Minimize Your Own Needs

1. You Say Yes Before Checking Your Own CapacityYour agreement arrives almost automatically, while your honest reaction appears hours later as tension, resentment or exhaustion. This often happens when being helpful feels safer than risking someone’s disappointment. Before answering a request, create a small pause: “Let me check and get back to you.” The goal is not to refuse everything. It is to give your needs a place in the decision before your reflex to accommodate takes over.2. You Apologize for Having Ordinary Human NeedsYou may say sorry for asking a question, needing reassurance, taking a sick day or wanting someone’s attention. The apology quietly frames your existence as an inconvenience, even when your request is reasonable.Notice when “sorry” could be replaced with clearer language. Instead of “Sorry to bother you,” try “Is now a good time?” You can respect another person’s limits without treating your own needs as something shameful.3. You Need Exhaustion to Justify Taking a BreakRest may feel acceptable only after you have finished everything, helped everyone or pushed yourself past usefulness. Until then, slowing down can trigger guilt because productivity has become your permission slip for care.Try scheduling rest before you desperately need it. A quiet evening, an unhurried meal or ten minutes without a task does not have to be earned through depletion. Rest is maintenance, not merely emergency treatment for burnout.4. You Confuse Being Low-Maintenance With Being LovablePerhaps you take pride in never needing much, never complaining and making relationships easy for everyone else. Independence can be healthy, but disappearing emotionally is different. If people rarely know what matters to you, they cannot meaningfully show up for you.Practice expressing one small preference without softening it into nothing: where you want to eat, what support would help or when you need space. Visibility is not the same as being demanding.5. Other People’s Discomfort Quickly Becomes Your EmergencyA changed tone, delayed reply or disappointed expression can send you into repair mode. You explain, reassure or surrender your position before knowing whether anything is actually wrong. Their discomfort feels like evidence that you have failed.Pause and separate empathy from responsibility. You can care that someone is upset without immediately fixing the feeling. Ask what happened, listen and let them own their reaction. Not every uncomfortable moment requires your self-abandonment.6. You Struggle to Name What You Actually WantWhen someone asks what you want, your mind may go blank or immediately scan for the answer that causes the least trouble. Repeatedly adapting to others can make your own preferences difficult to hear.Start with low-stakes choices and notice your first response before considering anyone else: tea or coffee, company or solitude, conversation or quiet. Preferences strengthen through use. You do not need a dramatic life vision to begin listening to yourself again.7. You Explain Your Boundaries Like a Courtroom DefenseA simple no can become a long presentation filled with evidence, apologies and backup reasons. You may hope that if your explanation is flawless, nobody can judge or reject your boundary. But overexplaining often turns a decision into an invitation to negotiate.Use brief, respectful language: “I can’t take that on,” or “That doesn’t work for me.” Context can be kind, but permission is not required. A boundary remains valid even when another person dislikes it.8. You Dismiss Pain Because Someone Else Has It WorseYou may compare your struggle with another person’s tragedy and conclude that you have no right to feel hurt. Perspective can be useful, but comparison does not process emotion; it often silences it. Two people can suffer differently without competing for legitimacy.Try naming the experience without ranking it: “This is hard for me right now.” That sentence does not deny anyone else’s pain. It simply allows you to respond honestly to your own.9. Receiving Care Makes You Uneasy or IndebtedWhen someone helps, compliments or comforts you, gratitude may quickly turn into pressure to repay them. You might minimize the gesture or rush to restore balance because receiving feels vulnerable. Care becomes a transaction instead of a shared human experience.Experiment with letting a small kindness stand. Say “Thank you, that helped” without immediately offering something back. Healthy reciprocity unfolds over time; it does not require an instant settlement every time someone treats you well.10. Resentment Reveals Needs You Never Allowed YourselfPersistent resentment is not always proof that others are selfish. Sometimes it signals that you keep agreeing to arrangements you do not genuinely accept. You give more than you can sustain, then feel unseen because nobody notices the sacrifice you concealed.Treat resentment as information rather than a character flaw. Ask what request, limit or conversation has been avoided. Speaking sooner may feel uncomfortable, but it is often kinder than offering silent generosity that eventually hardens into anger.

Isaiah Washington Breaks Silence on Wife Jenisa’s Tragic Death New

Isaiah Washington Breaks Silence on Wife Jenisa’s Tragic Death

Published 12:23 5 Oct 2026 GMT+1The actor said his wife had been a very 'private' person, so he had kept the news to himself until nowIsaiah Washington has broken his silence on the death of his wife of 29 years, Jenisa, after her sudden death last year. The former Grey’s Anatomy star, 63, shared the heartbreaking news on social media more than a year after his wife’s death, explaining that he had kept the loss private because Jenisa was fiercely protective of her personal life.Jenisa, who had been married to Washington for almost 30 years, collapsed suddenly on May 31, 2025. She died nine days later, on June 9, aged 56.AdvertThe actor said the death had been an 'enormous shock' to everyone..“Yes…the rumors are true. My dear wife of 29 years collapsed suddenly on May 31, 2025 and passed away on June 9, 2025. It came as a huge shock to me and our entire family,” Washington wrote in an Instagram post on October 3.The Grey's Anatomy star shared the heartbreaking family news with fans (Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Images)“She succumbed to a massive hemorrhagic stroke and never recovered.”Washington, who shares three children with Jenisa, said he had chosen not to announce her death at the time because she was a private person. His decision to speak publicly now appears to have come partly in response to speculation about his family, but his message was also an emotional tribute to the woman he had spent nearly three decades with.He urged people not to dismiss severe or unusual headaches, drawing on the devastating experience his family had been through.“Listen, y’all…some headaches are not just headaches or migraines, they can be much worse and a warning sign,” he urged. The star added: “Get a brain scan if you can and take those headaches seriously.”Washington said that their three children are continuing her legacy. He also acknowledged the unusual circumstances of making such a personal announcement so long after his wife’s death.“I don’t know if this is an appropriate post, because Jenisa Washington was extremely private, but I guess I just have to be reprimanded from her on the other side.”The post prompted an outpouring of sympathy from friends and fellow actors. Grey’s Anatomy star Viola Davis was among those who offered her condolences, while Debi Mazar also sent a message of support to Washington and his family.A haemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, causing bleeding. Warning signs of a stroke can appear suddenly and include facial weakness, weakness or numbness in an arm, problems with speech, dizziness, vision problems and a severe headache. In the case of a subarachnoid haemorrhage, the NHS says the main symptom can be an extremely painful headache that starts suddenly and does not go away. Other symptoms can include vomiting, confusion, fainting, seizures and weakness on one side of the body. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should call 999 immediately.Washington is best known for playing cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Preston Burke on Grey’s Anatomy, joining the hit medical drama when it launched in 2005. Why Plague Symptoms Are in Focus After Siberian Researcher’s Death New

Why Plague Symptoms Are in Focus After Siberian Researcher’s Death

Updated 15:54 5 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 15:51 5 Oct 2026 GMT+1The researcher was said to have died of 'pneumonia of unknown aetiology' but worked in a lab which tested plaguesNearly 200 people have reportedly been placed under medical observation in Siberia following the death of a laboratory researcher who developed severe pneumonia, amid concern that she may have been exposed t plague. The woman, named in reports as 28-year-old Darya Shipilova, worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Russia. Her death has prompted extensive precautions in the region, although as yet Russian authorities haven’t confirmed claims that she contracted pneumonic plague.Shipilova was diagnosed with ‘pneumonia of unknown aetiology’, according to Russia’s public health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor, reports The Guardian.AdvertThe organisation has said additional testing did not detect microorganisms associated with her professional work.It has been alleged that Shipilova may have been exposed to Yersinia pestis, the bacterium responsible for plague, following an accident involving a test tube at the laboratory. The young researcher worked in a laboratory which tested plague samples (Getty Stock)The hospital where she was treated was placed under quarantine, while people believed to have had contact with her have been monitored as a precaution.Officials have said the situation remains stable.Plague symptomsPneumonic plague, while now rare, can become extremely serious very quickly.Plague is a bacterial infection caused by Yersinia pestis. The bacteria are generally found in small mammals and their fleas, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).There are several forms of the illness, with symptoms varying according to how the infection develops.Symptoms of plague can include:Sudden fever and chillsHeadache and body achesWeakness or extreme tirednessNausea and vomitingPainful, swollen lymph nodes, known as “buboes”Abdominal painShortness of breathChest painCoughingBloody or watery mucusBleeding into the skin or other organs in cases of septicaemic plagueBlackening and death of tissue, particularly on the fingers, toes and nose, in severe septicaemic casesHundreds of people have now been quarantined (Getty Stock)Pneumonic plague affects the lungs, and person-to-person transmission is possible. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says patients can develop ‘rapidly developing pneumonia’ accompanied by shortness of breath, chest pain and coughing. Some people may produce bloody or watery mucus.Symptoms of pneumonic plague can develop particularly quickly. The WHO says plague symptoms generally appear between one and seven days after infection, but pneumonic plague can develop in as little as 24 hours. The good news is, despite its frightening historical reputation, plague is treatable with modern antibiotics.Early diagnosis is particularly important, however, because pneumonic and septicaemic forms can progress rapidly without treatment. The WHO says antibiotic treatment is effective against the bacteria and that early diagnosis and treatment can save lives.Health officials may also use preventive antibiotics for people who have had close contact with someone suspected of having pneumonic plague. This is because the infection can spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, although prolonged close contact is generally required.Plague is now uncommon worldwide and bears little resemblance to the uncontrolled outbreaks associated with the disease historically. There is currently no indication that people outside those potentially exposed in Siberia need to take special precautions because of the incident.Anyone who has had a credible exposure to plague and develops sudden fever, chills, swollen and painful lymph nodes, or respiratory symptoms such as shortness of breath and coughing should seek urgent medical assistance.Featured Image Credit: NDTVTopics: Health, Russia, World News

But his symptoms rapidly worsened, eventually leaving him unable to move either leg.The teen also experienced excruciating abdominal pain, a stiff neck and loss of bladder and bowel control as his condition deteriorated.Doctors initially diagnosed Joseph with transverse myelitis and began treating him with steroids. After days in intensive care and extensive testing, they determined that West Nile virus was behind the devastating complications. Now, the boy who once spent his days playing soccer, hanging out with his cousins and cheering on the Dodgers, Raiders and Lakers is facing an uncertain road to recovery.“Today, Joseph is facing challenges no 13-year-old should ever have to face,” his family wrote on the fundraiser. “He has lost the use of his legs, loss of bladder and bowel control, and is in excruciating nerve pain from the lower back down to his feet.”Joseph Vasquez has been diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a rare neurological condition linked to the West Nile virus. But the heartbreaking ordeal has also created a financial crisis for the family. As the household’s sole provider, Salazar has been unable to work while caring for her hospitalized son, prompting relatives to seek donations for living expenses, medical bills, transportation and rehabilitation.“We never imagined that something that began with what seemed like minor symptoms could change Joseph’s life so quickly,” the family wrote.Joseph Vasquez in happier times with his family. GofundmeJoseph’s terrifying case comes as Los Angeles County grapples with an alarming surge in West Nile infections. The county’s Department of Public Health has reported 100 infections and five deaths this year, the highest number of cases recorded this early in mosquito season in nearly a decade.Nearly all reported cases this year have involved severe illness, with most patients requiring hospitalization, although health officials noted that milder infections frequently go undiagnosed.“West Nile virus can cause serious illness, and the number of severe cases and deaths we are seeing this year is concerning,” Los Angeles County Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis warned. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has reported 100 infections and five deaths this year, the highest number of cases recorded this early in mosquito season in nearly a decade. Why Walsham le Willows Residents Are Fighting for 20mph Limits New

Why Walsham le Willows Residents Are Fighting for 20mph Limits

Locals in Walsham le Willows are campaiging for 20mph speed limits (Picture: James Linsell Clark/SWNS) Residents of a picturesque Suffolk village are campaigning for 20mph speed limits after warning that somebody could be killed. Locals living in Walsham le Willows secured a 20mph limit on a road passing the village school, playground and residential areas after 90% backed the move in a 2023 consultation. However, further requests to extend the limits have since been rejected by Suffolk County Council. Locals say roads around the village are still subject to 60mph national speed limits, despite blind bends, a lack of pavements and increasing traffic. Speed Watch coordinator Nick Tuck said the current limits were ‘unacceptable’. ‘Do we need to wait for a child on the way to the Sports Club to be killed before anything is done?’ he said. The Suffolk village is home to roughly 1,400 people (Picture: James Linsell Clark/SWNS) ‘Ideally, we should be able to put the infrastructure in place to slow traffic, such as chicanes, traffic/refuge crossing points, width restrictions or reduced speed limits. ‘Sadly, these all come at a cost, be it to the Parish or the County Councils, they also come with regulations and permissions. ‘Road safety and traffic management are not top of the pile until something goes horribly wrong.’ Parish councillor Janette Winch also said that traffic had increased in the area due to higher demands for housing, bringing commercial vehicles and commuters. ‘We, as residents, feel there’s inconsiderate driving especially with those who don’t live here and are trying to get from A to B,’ she said. ‘Those drivers are under a time pressure but slower speeds don’t massively impact an increase in their journey time. Speed Watch coordinator Nick Tuck said the current limits were ‘unacceptable’ (Picture: James Linsell Clark/SWNS) ‘If everybody drove the way some do, we would have accidents all the time. Within the village and the approaching roads, they are all at a national speed limit and it is not appropriate with the volume of traffic coming through.’ Meanwhile Ian Hartley, who is part of the Community Traffic Group, said his road of West Street was once a quiet lane when he moved in 2001. He explained: ‘When I first moved in and traffic started building up, I applied for a reduced speed limit and was told we didn’t have sufficient density for any road management. ‘Yet half a mile up the road, there’s another tiny hamlet and they’ve got 30mph signs – but no traffic at all. The council couldn’t explain that. ‘Since then, with village expansion, the traffic has increased exponentially to dangerous levels with only the national speed limit in place. Locals say roads around the village are still subject to 60mph national speed limits (Picture: James Linsell Clark/SWNS) ‘These are dangerous, blind bends and for most of us on our street, our access is on the front of the house.’ Residents of Walsham le Willows, which is home to roughly 1,400 people, have called for measures including chicanes, crossings, road narrowing and further speed reductions. But Suffolk County Council said there was not enough evidence to justify extending the existing 30mph and 40mph zones. A spokesperson said: ‘We carried out a survey of the roads and also looked at previous information about the area. ‘Based on what we found, there wasn’t enough evidence to support extending the existing 30mph and 40mph speed limits. ‘We only reduce speed limits where there is clear evidence that a lower limit is needed to help keep people safe.’ Ian Hartley said his road of West Street was once a quiet lane when he moved in 2001 (Picture: James Linsell Clark/SWNS) This comes after Wales introduced a default 20mph limit on most restricted roads in September 2023 despite critics calling the move ‘a war on cars’. In England, more 20mph limits are becoming increasingly common with Birmingham recently making headlines with plans to introduce 20mph limits on all non-A roads. A resident of Stanford Rivers, in Essex, has also created a homemade camera system which detects a vehicle’s speed and uses AI to post on social media the worst offenders. The creator, who wants to remain anonymous, posted on their blog that the project was attributed to ‘a healthy grudge against bad driving’.
