Joseph Vasquez, 13, Faces Rare Crisis After Mosquito Bites

See more of our coverage in your search results. A California boy who was once a healthy, soccer-loving teenager is now fighting to regain the use of his legs after a seemingly harmless mosquito bite triggered a devastating medical nightmare. Joseph Vasquez, 13, of Long Beach, has been bedridden at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for three weeks after contracting West Nile virus and developing transverse myelitis, a rare neurological condition that causes severe inflammation of the spinal cord, according to a GoFundMe launched by his family. The frightening ordeal began with what appeared to be ordinary mosquito bites but quickly spiraled into a life-altering medical crisis.Joseph Vasquez, a 13-year-old boy from Long Beach, remains hospitalized at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. GofundmeJoseph initially developed a full-body rash, mild headache, leg pain and low-grade fever. But his symptoms rapidly worsened, eventually leaving him unable to move either leg.The teen also experienced excruciating abdominal pain, a stiff neck and loss of bladder and bowel control as his condition deteriorated.Doctors initially diagnosed Joseph with transverse myelitis and began treating him with steroids. After days in intensive care and extensive testing, they determined that West Nile virus was behind the devastating complications. Now, the boy who once spent his days playing soccer, hanging out with his cousins and cheering on the Dodgers, Raiders and Lakers is facing an uncertain road to recovery.“Today, Joseph is facing challenges no 13-year-old should ever have to face,” his family wrote on the fundraiser. “He has lost the use of his legs, loss of bladder and bowel control, and is in excruciating nerve pain from the lower back down to his feet.”Joseph Vasquez has been diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a rare neurological condition linked to the West Nile virus. Courtesy of the Vasques FamilyThe family said doctors have warned that Joseph’s condition is extraordinarily rare, with limited research available to predict how his recovery might unfold. His mother, Maria Salazar, a widowed mother of three, has remained at his bedside around the clock. But the heartbreaking ordeal has also created a financial crisis for the family. As the household’s sole provider, Salazar has been unable to work while caring for her hospitalized son, prompting relatives to seek donations for living expenses, medical bills, transportation and rehabilitation.“We never imagined that something that began with what seemed like minor symptoms could change Joseph’s life so quickly,” the family wrote.Joseph Vasquez in happier times with his family. GofundmeJoseph’s terrifying case comes as Los Angeles County grapples with an alarming surge in West Nile infections. The county’s Department of Public Health has reported 100 infections and five deaths this year, the highest number of cases recorded this early in mosquito season in nearly a decade.Nearly all reported cases this year have involved severe illness, with most patients requiring hospitalization, although health officials noted that milder infections frequently go undiagnosed.“West Nile virus can cause serious illness, and the number of severe cases and deaths we are seeing this year is concerning,” Los Angeles County Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis warned. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has reported 100 infections and five deaths this year, the highest number of cases recorded this early in mosquito season in nearly a decade. Getty ImagesMost people infected with West Nile virus experience no symptoms, while approximately one in five develops fever, headaches, body aches or a rash. However, roughly one in 150 infected people develops a severe illness, potentially involving the brain or spinal cord and causing paralysis. There is no vaccine or specific treatment for the virus. With peak mosquito season stretching from June through November, health officials are urging residents to use insect repellent, eliminate standing water and repair damaged window screens.Meanwhile, Joseph’s family is pleading for prayers and support as the teenager faces an uncertain future.“We are holding onto hope knowing that Joseph still has a long road ahead of him,” his family wrote.

Why Walsham le Willows Residents Are Fighting for 20mph Limits New

Why Walsham le Willows Residents Are Fighting for 20mph Limits

Locals in Walsham le Willows are campaiging for 20mph speed limits (Picture: James Linsell Clark/SWNS) Residents of a picturesque Suffolk village are campaigning for 20mph speed limits after warning that somebody could be killed. Locals living in Walsham le Willows secured a 20mph limit on a road passing the village school, playground and residential areas after 90% backed the move in a 2023 consultation. However, further requests to extend the limits have since been rejected by Suffolk County Council. Locals say roads around the village are still subject to 60mph national speed limits, despite blind bends, a lack of pavements and increasing traffic. Speed Watch coordinator Nick Tuck said the current limits were ‘unacceptable’. ‘Do we need to wait for a child on the way to the Sports Club to be killed before anything is done?’ he said. The Suffolk village is home to roughly 1,400 people (Picture: James Linsell Clark/SWNS) ‘Ideally, we should be able to put the infrastructure in place to slow traffic, such as chicanes, traffic/refuge crossing points, width restrictions or reduced speed limits. ‘Sadly, these all come at a cost, be it to the Parish or the County Councils, they also come with regulations and permissions. ‘Road safety and traffic management are not top of the pile until something goes horribly wrong.’ Parish councillor Janette Winch also said that traffic had increased in the area due to higher demands for housing, bringing commercial vehicles and commuters. ‘We, as residents, feel there’s inconsiderate driving especially with those who don’t live here and are trying to get from A to B,’ she said. ‘Those drivers are under a time pressure but slower speeds don’t massively impact an increase in their journey time. Speed Watch coordinator Nick Tuck said the current limits were ‘unacceptable’ (Picture: James Linsell Clark/SWNS) ‘If everybody drove the way some do, we would have accidents all the time. Within the village and the approaching roads, they are all at a national speed limit and it is not appropriate with the volume of traffic coming through.’ Meanwhile Ian Hartley, who is part of the Community Traffic Group, said his road of West Street was once a quiet lane when he moved in 2001. He explained: ‘When I first moved in and traffic started building up, I applied for a reduced speed limit and was told we didn’t have sufficient density for any road management. ‘Yet half a mile up the road, there’s another tiny hamlet and they’ve got 30mph signs – but no traffic at all. The council couldn’t explain that. ‘Since then, with village expansion, the traffic has increased exponentially to dangerous levels with only the national speed limit in place. Locals say roads around the village are still subject to 60mph national speed limits (Picture: James Linsell Clark/SWNS) ‘These are dangerous, blind bends and for most of us on our street, our access is on the front of the house.’ Residents of Walsham le Willows, which is home to roughly 1,400 people, have called for measures including chicanes, crossings, road narrowing and further speed reductions. But Suffolk County Council said there was not enough evidence to justify extending the existing 30mph and 40mph zones. A spokesperson said: ‘We carried out a survey of the roads and also looked at previous information about the area. ‘Based on what we found, there wasn’t enough evidence to support extending the existing 30mph and 40mph speed limits. ‘We only reduce speed limits where there is clear evidence that a lower limit is needed to help keep people safe.’ Ian Hartley said his road of West Street was once a quiet lane when he moved in 2001 (Picture: James Linsell Clark/SWNS) This comes after Wales introduced a default 20mph limit on most restricted roads in September 2023 despite critics calling the move ‘a war on cars’. In England, more 20mph limits are becoming increasingly common with Birmingham recently making headlines with plans to introduce 20mph limits on all non-A roads. A resident of Stanford Rivers, in Essex, has also created a homemade camera system which detects a vehicle’s speed and uses AI to post on social media the worst offenders. The creator, who wants to remain anonymous, posted on their blog that the project was attributed to ‘a healthy grudge against bad driving’.

Why Christa Pike May Not Face a Second Execution Attempt New

Why Christa Pike May Not Face a Second Execution Attempt

Published 15:18 5 Oct 2026 GMT+1Pike, 50, was supposed to become the first woman put to death in Tennessee in 200 yearsAn attorney who previously represented Christa Pike during her post-conviction appeals has revealed how another execution attempt could go ahead. The failed execution attempt of the murder has made repeated headlines since she was taken to hospital for ‘live-saving’ measures on 30 September. The now 50-year-old was supposed to become the first woman put to death in Tennessee in two centuries after being sent to prison for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. However the attempts failed, and she was taken to hospital having survived two doses of the lethal injection.AdvertPike reportedly 'remains critically ill' and is being treated at a hospital in Nashville, Texas, with her legal team claiming she 'may not fully recover'.Christa Pike, pictured in 1995, is receiving life-saving medical care in hospital (WBIR10)Her lawyer Stephen Ferrel told CNN of her current status: “She is guarded. I’m not sure who may have seen her."I know I have not seen her. The state of Tennessee has not yet said whether it will ultimately try to execute her again.”He added that she 'may not fully recover' is she isn't executed, noting that her future remains uncertain as doctors tried to clear two doses of pentobarbital from her body.Gov. Bill Lee later halted the one remaining execution for the rest of the year in Tennessee pending an investigation. Now, Pike's former lawyer James Crowson has told LADbible about his experience with her in the mid-2000s, revealing what he thought of her and what the next steps could be.She has been locked up since 1996 after killing her classmate, Colleen Slemmer, when she was 18 at the time.Colleen Slemmer was killed by Christa Pike (Family Handout)They may not be able to attempt another execution Speaking to LADbible, Crowson, who opposes the death penalty, said she may not be able to face another execution due to the potential impact of the botched attempt. This is because if she suffers permanent brain injuries or becomes so compromised 'she doesn't know what's going on', then they wouldn't be able to attempt to take her life.Executions are legally barred if an inmate is mentally incompetent and doesn't understand the reason for their execution.“Nobody, certainly not Christa Pike and not even the state of Tennessee, should be allowed to take someone’s life," he explained.Christa Pike (YouTube/Insider Edition)"The outcome of this attempted execution shows it’s difficult to walk the fine line between properly punishing someone who did something horrific and not violating the constitutional prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment.”He continued: “As a practical matter, there’s going to be a lot of pressure on the governor to grant clemency after this.“Without knowing the exact effect of the attempted execution on Christa, it’s impossible to say how this will all play out. "In my experience a lot of folks who are on ventilators end up with permanent brain injuries. If someone has a brain injury to such an extent that she cannot see a causal relationship between the punishment and her prior actions, that person cannot be executed. "In other words, if she’s so compromised that she doesn’t understand what’s going on, they will not be able to attempt another execution.”Christa had been on death row for 30 years (Getty)"She could be very charming"Crowson had represented Pike between 2006 and 2008 while working for the Tennessee Post-Conviction Defender.Remembering his interactions with her, he told LADbible that despite her crimes, she was 'very charming' and had suffered abuse.“Christa Pike was an attractive young lady when she was arrested and there was an overlay of allegations of satanic involvement in the crime, and that is always something that gets a lot of attention," he explained.“She could be very charming, and she at least projected empathy and being sensitive. Christa Pike (Tennessee Department of Correction)"She was an artist, among other things, and a bit of a writer. She was a very nuanced person. She had a lot of different sides to her personality. Of course, I didn’t get to see all of them.”"I was part of a team of two attorneys who worked on her appeal for about a year and a half in the late 2000s. Christa had other appellate attorneys before I joined the team and after I left. "At the time, we were having hearings at the appellate level where we were making the argument that Christa received ineffective assistance of counsel at her trial."Featured Image Credit: Tennessee Department of CorrectionTopics: US News, Crime

10 Ways Emotional Avoidance Disguises Itself as Being Fine New

10 Ways Emotional Avoidance Disguises Itself as Being Fine

1. You stay busy enough to outrun your feelingsA packed schedule can look like ambition while quietly serving as emotional cover. If every free moment gets filled with work, errands or plans, you never have to notice what surfaces in stillness. The issue is not productivity; it is whether rest feels strangely threatening. Try leaving one small gap in your day without reaching for a task. Notice what appears, name it without judgment and decide whether it needs attention rather than another distraction.2. You explain emotions instead of actually feeling themSome people can describe exactly why they are upset while remaining disconnected from the feeling itself. Analysis creates distance: you build a flawless case about your childhood, partner or workplace, but never admit, “That hurt me.” Insight is valuable, yet it cannot replace emotional contact. When you catch yourself narrating from a safe distance, pause and identify the physical experience beneath the explanation—tight shoulders, a heavy chest, restless hands or the urge to leave.3. You turn every painful moment into a jokeHumor can be generous, resilient and genuinely healing. It can also become a quick exit whenever a conversation gets vulnerable. You make everyone laugh about the breakup, the rejection or the family conflict, then change the subject before anyone responds seriously. Pay attention to what happens after the laughter fades. If the joke prevents you from receiving care, try following it with one honest sentence: “It is funny now, but it affected me more than I expected.”4. You minimize hurt by comparing it to worseTelling yourself that others have bigger problems may create perspective, but it can also invalidate your own experience. Pain does not need to win a competition before it deserves attention. A difficult friendship, disappointing milestone or cutting remark can matter even when life is otherwise stable. Replace “I should not feel this way” with a more accurate question: “What is this reaction showing me?” That shift makes room for proportion without forcing your feelings to disappear.5. You call emotional distance healthy independenceIndependence means being capable without refusing closeness. Emotional distance is different: you avoid asking for help, reveal little and feel uncomfortable when someone tries to support you. Saying “I handle things myself” may protect you from disappointment, but it can also keep relationships permanently shallow. Practice dependence in low-risk ways. Ask a trusted person for a small favor, share an unfinished thought or allow someone to comfort you without immediately insisting that you are fine.6. You focus on fixing everyone else’s problemsBecoming the reliable problem-solver can provide purpose and keep attention safely away from your own needs. You answer late-night calls, manage crises and anticipate what everyone requires, then feel guilty or restless when the focus turns toward you. Helping is not inherently avoidant; the pattern matters. Before stepping in, ask whether help was requested and what it will cost you. Care becomes healthier when it includes boundaries and does not require your self-erasure.7. You confuse numbness with genuine inner peacePeace feels spacious: you can experience emotion without being controlled by it. Numbness feels flat: little reaches you, including experiences that once brought pleasure, tenderness or interest. Because numbness reduces distress, it can initially feel like recovery. Look at your full emotional range rather than the absence of pain alone. Reconnect gently through music, movement, conversation or familiar activities, and consider professional support if emotional flatness persists or disrupts daily life.8. You keep conversations safely practical and shallowLogistics offer reliable shelter from vulnerability. You can discuss schedules, groceries, work and other people for hours without saying what is happening inside you. Over time, even close relationships may begin to feel lonely because no one is meeting the person behind the updates. Deepening a conversation does not require a dramatic confession. Start by adding one emotional detail: not only what happened, but what you feared, needed, regretted or hoped would happen next.9. You chase closure from people who cannot provide itRepeatedly replaying a final conversation can feel like emotional work, but sometimes it postpones acceptance. You imagine that one better explanation, apology or answer will finally let you move forward. The other person may be unwilling, unavailable or incapable of giving you what you need. Closure can begin with acknowledging what their behavior already communicated. Write down what remains unanswered, then separate what only they know from what you can decide for yourself now.10. You mistake functioning well for being healedYou may meet deadlines, keep the house running and show up for others while still carrying unresolved grief, anger or fear. Competence proves that you can function; it does not prove that nothing hurts. This distinction matters because high-functioning pain is easy for others—and you—to overlook. Check beyond performance: How are you sleeping, relating, resting and responding when memories surface? Healing is not flawless productivity. It is growing capacity to face your experience without abandoning yourself.

Tihomir Stanić Foto: Nova.rs autor: 05. okt.
