There has been a major development in the investigation after a man was mauled by a tiger at a wildlife park.

Emergency services were contacted shortly after 1.30pm on 10 October when a man had entered the enclosure at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, South Yorkshire Police have said, with the park still remaining closed amid investigations.

Visitors who were observing the big cats later revealed how panic ensued as they watched the man grapple with the tiger, named Altai.

One witness told LADbible they saw 'staff running around' frantically and ushering people towards the exit, 'but wouldn't say anything about why'.

Others told of witnessing a mum desperately try and grab the victim before he jumped into the enclosure.

The park was closed as emergency crews raced to the scene on Saturday afternoon and cleared the area.

It was understood the wildlife park would reopen on Monday (12 October) however it remained closed for investigations to take place.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed to LADbible on Monday that the man was believed to have been visiting the park alone when the tragic incident occurred.

In a previous statement on social media, the wildlife park added that people had contacted them about Altai before it was confirmed he is 'safe and well' and will not be euthanised following the incident.

It has now been confirmed that a health and safety investigation has been launched into the death.

This was confirmed by the licensing authority the City of Doncaster Council said.

Dan Swaine, Executive Director of Place at City of Doncaster Council, said: “We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred this weekend.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with everyone involved, including the family and loved ones of the person who tragically lost their life, those that witnessed the incident and the staff involved at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, as well as the emergency services who provided a swift response.

“As the relevant licensing authority for the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, I can confirm that, in line with our statutory duties, the council has launched a health and safety investigation.

“We are also working with multiple agencies, including the police and health agencies, and are supporting the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in response to the incident.

“At this time, we won’t be commenting further on the individual or the investigation and we ask that the privacy of those involved is respected at this difficult time.”

Meanwhile a spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police previously added: "At 1.35pm today (Saturday 10 October) we received reports of a man entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. The tiger subsequently attacked the man, resulting in serious injury.

"Emergency services attended and sadly, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The man's family is aware and is being supported by specialist officers. Our thoughts are with them at this distressing time.

"Regarding rumours surrounding the condition of the tiger, the animal was uninjured and remained in the enclosure following the incident and there is no wider risk to the public.

"Following the incident, Yorkshire Wildlife Park was evacuated and officers remain on scene carrying out enquiries. We are aware of videos circulating online and we would encourage people not to share this footage."
