The death row killer has communicated for the first time since her failed execution

Christa Pike's team have issued an update after the news broke that she is awake and talking, following her botched execution.

Her lawyer Luke Inhen confirmed in court today (7 October) that she's “speaking limitedly,” reports the BBC, adding that until yesterday she'd been unconscious.

As previously reported by the BBC, Dr Joel Zivot, a professor of anaesthesiology and surgery in Atlanta who consulted as an expert for Pike’s legal team, revealed the limited communication that has taken place.

He confirmed that Pike has been taken off a ventilator and told the outlet: "She has some memories of being in the hospital but no memory, I believe, of the execution attempt."

She was reportedly able to recall her name but had made an incorrect guess at the date, believing that the month was still September.

It comes after lawyers for Pike said in a statement, published by The Tennessean on Tuesday (6 October): "Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking, and continues to receive critical medical care. Despite the severe damage she endured to her arms, she is still handcuffed and shackled to the bed. Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery."

Pike was administered two doses of the deadly drug pentobarbital on September 30 by the Tennessee Department of Correction, but she survived.

Lawyers described how she was heard whimpering, crying, and complaining of pain in her arm due to the procedure, before she lost consciousness.

While a chaotic press conference was held, an ambulance arrived outside the facility, and she was rushed to hospital.

Pike was reportedly under heavy guard while unconscious in critical condition.

Her legal team praised first responders 'who treated Christa like a human and have provided exceptional care to her'.

Her lawyers' statement also marked the first sign of recovery for Pike since Wednesday's failed execution.

The Tennessee Department of Correction, meanwhile, has said it can offer no update on her condition beyond confirming she was taken to hospital.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of her classmate Colleen Slemmer.

Her legal team previously said the injection had left her arm burned and bruised, and there were fears she might not recover.

Dr Zivot previously said the update 'bodes well for a good recovery' but warned that it could be weeks or even months before doctors can fully judge how well she's recovering.

Christa Pike revealed what lethal injection felt like in her body during botched execution

"She's still in the ICU," he said. "She has recovered to a certain degree that she's able to be off a ventilator and able to speak, but in no way would I announce her free of further serious risk.

"There's still a lot of bad things that can happen here, even when everyone is doing their job well."

Her legal team was in court to press for answers about what went wrong with the lethal injection, including an order requiring Tennessee to preserve evidence from the failed execution.

They are seeking a court order requiring the Tennessee Department of Correction to preserve evidence, including drug lot numbers, records, and other information from the attempted execution.

State lawyer Will Ayers said on Wednesday that they are "unusual procedural position here".
