Melissa Etheridge Shares Heartfelt Memory of Son Beckett's Coming Out Moment
Melissa Etheridge recently shared a memory about her late son Beckett, who once told her that he was straight. She recalled the moment and discussed her feelings about her children discovering their identities.
A Mother's Journey
Etheridge recounted a conversation with Beckett when he was 11 years old. He came to her expressing his belief that he was straight. Etheridge jokingly responded by suggesting he was just going through a phase, connecting it to her own experiences of growing up feeling different.
She emphasized how children come into the world as themselves and parents have the role of observing their journey of self-discovery.
Family and Loss
Etheridge is also the mother of three other children: daughter Bailey with former partner Julie Cypher, and twins Johnnie Rose and Miller Steven with ex Tammy Lynn Michaels.
In May 2020, Etheridge announced Beckett's death at age 21 due to issues related to opioid addiction. She expressed her grief on social media, highlighting the struggle faced by families dealing with similar losses.
Legacy and Moving Forward
The singer has worked to heal from this loss by creating art and initiating The Etheridge Foundation. This foundation focuses on researching treatments for addiction and supporting affected families.
