Tragic Turn: English Pastor Faces Manslaughter Charge in Baptism Death

A pastor in England faces charges after a man drowned during a baptism ceremony in Birmingham. The incident occurred when 61-year-old Robert Smith died after being submerged on October 8, 2023.

The baptism was held by Life Changing Ministries in a small pool and was reportedly livestreamed on Facebook. The stream was paused during the ceremony and later removed.

According to the church's Facebook post, Smith had been a member for four years and traveled to Birmingham specifically for the baptism.

Legal Proceedings

Cheryl Bartley, aged 48, has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter related to the event. She is set to appear in Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on May 14.

Authorities argue that there may have been significant lapses in ensuring Smith's safety during the religious ceremony. The court will evaluate if proper precautions were in place at the time of the baptism.
