Sara Cohen, known by her pen name Freida McFadden, has revealed her true identity. As the author of the best-selling book The Housemaid, which led to a popular film adaptation, Sara decided it was time to be open about who she is.

Freida McFadden Studied Math at Harvard

Sara studied mathematics at Harvard University before attending Stony Brook University for medicine. During this time, she cultivated her writing skills and published fictional works alongside her medical studies.

Her debut novel, The Devil Wears Scrubs, drew inspiration from her experiences as a medical intern.

Sara Cohen Is a Doctor

In addition to her literary career, Sara is a specialist in brain disorders. She transitioned to part-time work in 2023 and now practices occasionally.

"But I have stepped away from my job," Sara explained in an April 2026 interview with USA Today.

Why Did Sarah Cohen Adopt the Pseudonym Freida McFadden?

Sara adopted a pseudonym to balance her careers without affecting her medical practice. She sought to keep them separate until she felt ready to focus solely on one aspect of her professional life.

"I just realized I was completely overwhelmed from trying to do both," she shared. "The name will be a surprise, but I've always been genuine with my readers."
