Ian McKellen Teases Johnny Depp's Impressive Hollywood Comeback
Johnny Depp's Return to Hollywood
Ian McKellen has praised Johnny Depp's performance in the upcoming film Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, marking Depp's return to a major Hollywood role. In an interview, McKellen described Depp as "effervescent, funny, irreverent, serious," and mentioned a positive environment on set.
Film Details and Cast
Depp plays the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, while McKellen portrays Jacob Marley in the movie directed by Ti West. The cast also includes Andrea Riseborough as the Ghost of Christmas Past and Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, among others. The film is set for release in November.
Depp's Legal Battles and Career Impact
This role is Depp's first major project since stepping down from Fantastic Beasts following legal disputes with his ex-wife Amber Heard and a defamation lawsuit involving a U.K. newspaper. The court ruled against him, leading Mads Mikkelsen to replace him in the franchise.
Despite this setback, both Depp and Heard were found liable for defamation against each other in a Virginia trial. They settled their claims in December 2022.
Future Projects
Post-legal battles, Depp acted in Minamata and Jeanne du Barry. He will next be seen alongside Penélope Cruz in Lionsgate’s Day Drinker, directed by Marc Webb.
