Parents Allegedly Torture Teen Daughter to Death Over Text Messages
A mother and stepfather were sentenced to prison after being found responsible for the death of their teenage daughter in Los Angeles County. The couple was accused of torturing the 16-year-old over text messages she sent to boys.
Details of the Incident
The victim, known as "Pearlene V," collapsed and died on August 15, 2021, in a trailer described as having no running water or electricity. She reportedly endured hours of physical punishment inflicted by her mother, Oriana Elias, and stepfather, Vincent Gibbs.
Prosecutors stated that the couple punished Pearlene with strenuous exercises and physical beatings using a wooden plank and belt.
Court Sentencing
On April 2, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Scott Yang sentenced Elias and Gibbs to 22 years to life in prison. Their sentencing followed a March 17 jury decision finding them guilty of multiple charges, including second-degree murder and torture.
The district attorney condemned the parents' actions as a betrayal of their duty to protect Pearlene from harm. The court noted that nothing could restore the young girl's lost future.
Investigation and Convictions
Elias faced additional convictions for child abuse and witness intimidation. Similarly, Gibbs was also convicted of using a weapon during his crimes. Both were investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau.
Further details about defense representation for Elias and Gibbs were not available at this time.
