A Brazilian social media figure known for supporting Donald Trump and downplaying immigration raids was recently taken into custody by ICE agents in New Jersey. Júnior Pena, legally Eustáquio da Silva Pena Júnior, had previously defended Trump's tough immigration policies to his online followers.

Pena, who has lived in the US since 2009 and hails from Belo Horizonte, was detained following a missed court appearance and is now at an immigration detention center in Newark. His lawyer is working to resolve the case and prevent a transfer to another state.

In earlier posts, Pena had dismissed those detained in immigration raids as "crooks" and urged Brazilians not to panic. However, his own detention has now prompted backlash from critics on his social media accounts.

Brazil has seen a surge in deportations under Trump, with 2,785 Brazilians deported last year, up from 1,640 the year before. Pena's online content highlights migrant stories while also criticizing Brazil's left-wing president and supporting far-right leaders.

As news of Pena's arrest circulated, his followers and friends took to social media to express concern and ask for prayers, while critics pointed out the irony of his situation, given his previous support for Trump's policies.
